3/5 read for a historical take on The Play that centers the brutality of women‘s lives. Extremely well written but not a happy read.

Less a retelling and more of an expansion of the story this was incredibly dark and yet compelling. In this reimagining lady Macbeth is a new bride, perhaps witch touched from Brittany arriving in dark Alba and seeing the starkness of the court and the violence and ambition of her new, cruel husband. There was much in this that was not for me but it was really well told and captures the darkness and fear of the original well.

I like Kell Woods‘ style of lacing together threads from different fairy tales and folklore, making her work feel both familiar and fresh. I really enjoyed “Upon a Starlit Tide”, but this didn‘t capture me in quite the same way - I struggled a bit with the pacing. It did start to get me in the mood for books that feel more like fall! 🍂🎧

Kiela and her talking spider plant Caz escape the burning of their great library in the huge city where they live. They find refuge on the island where she was born, along with the spell books they smuggled to safety. They decide to create a jam shop and soon they are surrounded by new friends like the merhorse herder and the local baker. Cozy to the max and a lovely read. (Warning: the book will make you want to eat toast and jam.)

Definitely should be sleeping but I stayed up to finish this one! Whimsical is a good way to describe this book and the characters. A story of hope, friendship and community! I can‘t wait to read The Enchanted Greenhouse!

It was one of the rare rules in a joint without any. The only rule the master of the club did not mind following. He blended in with the sea of suits and white masks that arrived every other night.

Violet is a bored prophet toeing the line with Prince Cyrus. She knows she should hold her tongue around her future boss, but he is insufferable and threatens to do away with her position until a curse emerges from the country's borders that make Violet more valuable than ever. The premise is so promising, but I found the “twists“ predictable and was left wanting more development out of the characters.

Book club meets next week...guess I best get cracking.
