#readingoceania2024 #palau I read Shipwreck, Palau Discovered by Dr Paul Dale. It is about the wreck of the British packet Antelope and the mutual discovery of the people of Palau and Europeans. The crew befriended the natives and built a small ship to return to Macao. Unlike almost all the other initial Native/European interactions I have read- this was a meeting of fair minded, respectful humans who actually appreciated each other.

Another book I never would have read if it weren‘t for a Litsy challenge. In this book a hobbyist searches for the missing people in #Palau - the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of WWII. I found this short book to be very interesting. #ReadingOceania24

Librarybelle I love how these challenges help us find new-to-us authors and books! 3mo
BarbaraBB One of the bloodiest battles? Who would have thought. It‘s always refreshing and important to read about such events 3mo

#readingOceania2024 #palau #belau A significant collection of poetry, short stories and excerpts from across Micronesia including Kiribati and Palau. It leans heavily on work from Guam (Guahan). I couldn‘t find a Palau book so I am using this. The editorial was quite good. The quality of the writing is very high and the groupings are well done

Librarybelle Very nice! A good way to learn about the cultures! 4mo

Karisa Beautiful place with a sad past… I didn‘t know much of that history. I‘d only heard of this island nation when watching an old season of Survivor this summer. 😅 So interesting! Thank you for sharing! 5mo

Nine books for May! It was very hard to pick a favorite book for May but if forced to, I‘d pick the tagged book. Followed by a tie between Queen of the South and Sea of Tranquility. Four books this month for #Spain #foodandlit. Two books for #authoramonth. Two for #readingOceania #Palau and #NewZealand and of course all of them for #litsyatoz but mostly for #letterQ and #letterY

Some of the fiercest battles in the Pacific in WWII were over #Palau. In the 1990s, a successful entrepreneur and scientist found his life‘s calling to find the planes that had been shot down over the island and bring closure to many families who still had MIAs. As with his bioengineering business, his mission succeeded and this is part his story as well as a son who never knew his father, a gunner on one of the downed planes. #readingOceania

#readingoceania2024 #palau Looking for something from or about Palau and saw this. Now I am just posting to warn others. This was written by AI and is a truly horrible example of AI. It is repetitive and goes into no detail. The phrase “significant impact” or “significant changes” is in every paragraph without sharing what those impacts and changes were. I read it as it was very short but highly recommend that others stay away.

Texreader Thanks for the warning. I‘ve gotten one or two of those the past few years and they‘re horrible 8mo

An LA cop accepts the position of chief of police over all the Micronesian islands in the late 1970s to 1980s, and dang was it ever an adventurous true story. Sometimes it was downright scary and at least twice it was hysterically funny thanks to very real cultural differences from island to island. I don‘t think any book could better describe the islands‘ cultures, and adapting to them than this book. Very readable nonfiction. The author is ⬇️

Texreader impressive for his creative solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems. His success paid off and he continues to enjoy success in his subsequent careers. #readingOceania #Palau #MarshallIslands Just 3 countries to go to finish this challenge!! (edited) 10mo
