Vanished: The Sixty-Year Search for the Missing Men of World War II | Wil S. Hylton
5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
From a mesmerizing storyteller, the gripping search for a missing World War II crew, their bomber plane, and their legacy. In the fall of 1944, a massive American bomber carrying eleven men vanished over the Pacific islands of Palau, leaving a trail of mysteries. According to mission reports from the Army Air Forces, the plane crashed in shallow waterbut when investigators went to find it, the wreckage wasnt there. Witnesses saw the crew parachute to safety, yet the airmen were never seen again. Some of their relatives whispered that they had returned to the United States in secret and lived in hiding. But they never explained why. For sixty years, the U.S. government, the children of the missing airmen, and a maverick team of scientists and scuba divers searched the islands for clues. With every clue they found, the mystery only deepened. Now, in a spellbinding narrative, Wil S. Hylton weaves together the true story of the missing men, their final mission, the families they left behind, and the real reason their disappearance remained shrouded in secrecy for so long. This is a story of love, loss, sacrifice, and faithof the undying hope among the families of the missing, and the relentless determination of scientists, explorers, archaeologists, and deep-sea divers to solve one of the enduring mysteries of World War II.

With apologies to @rockpools this is a war story that takes place 60 years after the war. Narrative non-fiction that speaks to the need for closure for MIA families. I did get some Palau flavor such as it is a matrilineal society but largely the book read to me of two huge foreign nations fighting over and destroying a tiny island culture. #readaroundtheworld #palau

rockpools That sounds very sad, on lots of levels Love the photo, though. 3y
Simona I was hoping to read this book, but sounds too sad for me now ... so I guess I‘m stuck with my original pick 3y

My favourite book model and reading companion Mia has disappeared a week ago... by now I‘ve lost pretty much all hope that she‘ll return... she has been my cat for more than ten years, from my early teen years on, so obviously I‘m devasted and immensely sad 😢

Mitch Hey - don‘t loose hope. We‘ve had our cats go on walk about for a while...she may well have gone on an adventure and forgotten about time... keep hopeful. Sending you love 💕🙏💕 6y
TiredLibrarian We had a cat go missing for 8 or 9 days & come back. I know it's nerve-wracking, but don't lose hope! 😿😺 6y

Soubhiville I also had 2 cats who each left for 7-10 days and eventually came back. I hope your baby will return! 6y
MicheleinPhilly ☹️Litter box outside sometimes helps. I‘ll keep my fingers crossed. 🤞🏼 6y
Cailey_Mac Put her kitty litter box outside. They usually smell that and come back! 6y

BooksAtNight Don‘t lose hope! Put up flyers everywhere and definitely try putting her litter box outside. Also, I would keep calling animal shelters and/or rescue groups in the area. Sometimes they don‘t always connect the dots between a missing cat and a cat they found. At the very least they may be able to help spread the word about her! 6y
CouronneDhiver Hopefully she comes back home 6y
CareBear Like others have said, I have also lost a cat for weeks who eventually returned. Keep positive! 💜 6y

I went on to my Goodreads account today and this happened. All of my books have disappeared!!!

Has anyone else had this problem? I've emailed them and am awaiting a response, so frustrating!

ReadingVampire It happened to @kim.guernsey too! 6y
Bambolina_81 @Puredragonstar I've been on GR since 2009 so that's a lot of books especially as this has been my primary book log grrrrr 6y
ReadingVampire 🤭oh nooooo!!! Maybe it's not all gone perhaps it's just the app? Have you checked the actual site? (edited) 6y

ReadingVampire It's been my primary way of book logging too... (edited) 6y
Bambolina_81 @Puredragonstar Thank you, that was a good idea! I just checked the desktop site and my books are listed under 'All' and not separated out on to my usual shelves. Strange but better than a total wipeout I guess! Thank you for the suggestion :) 6y
ReadingVampire You're welcome I hope the app gets fixed and everything returns to normal!!! I just asked everyone for suggestions on new ways to keep track of the books maybe to have a backup. I would hate for you or anyone to loose all the hard work its tough remembering what you have read over the years. 6y
Leftcoastzen OMG! Gotta check , though I have kept a written record as well for years 6y
Redwritinghood Thank goodness, no. This would freak me out. (edited) 6y

Anyone read this? Picked it up at the Little Free Library at the Hollygrove Farmers Market tonight. I love these kind of stories.
