Creation Lake: A Novel | Rachel Kushner

DNF - maybe the audio format was wrong? The book has large chunks of non-fiction, which may be better read…?
Or perhaps I just didn‘t resonate with the way the book is written and narrated…

I‘m increasingly finding many of the “celebrated” , “on winning lists” books to be not worth the hype.
Happy with the less-renowned works in my library 😅😉

I might give it a try again some day…but not in the near future.

Okay. Well. This didn't jive with me at all. I have read the reviews by others and I guess I am missing something but honestly this was such a chore I don't care
This was so incredibly disjointed (meant to be) and the main character was completely unlikable and uninteresting - how do you make a sky uninteresting? Ask Kushner here. I don't mind an unlikable MC but dang it they have to be interesting.
Not for me 2/5

sarahbarnes I haven‘t seen any reviews that make me want to rush to read this one. Sorry it was a miss. 3w
TalesandTexts Agree with you. Dnf‘d this one 60% through. Actually, I saw quite a few ARC reviews giving it 4 & 5 stars - and honestly, I take such reviews with a pinch of salt. 1d

Wow. This might be the absolute worst audiobook I have ever encountered. I am trying to sneak in a couple of chapters on my drive to work today and I just cannot listen to this narrator!
Normally I listen at 1.5 but tried speeding this up to 2 and her pauses between words is still excruciating. Her monotone might be a reflection of the main character, but I honestly don't know how anyone could get through this while paying attention.

ChaoticMissAdventures Oh. My. Goodness. I just looked it up so I could avoid this narrator's other readings and the author herself narrates this! So this is how she wants you to consume the voice. Oh no. This is going to reflect in my overall view. I just do not understand. 3w
squirrelbrain Oh dear - sounds awful! 😬 3w
ImperfectCJ I rarely like audiobooks narrated by the author. Audiobook narrating is such a different skill than writing, and I don't find that there are many who can do both well. 3w

Ruthiella I have heard Kushner in interviews before and I could not listen to her read an audio book! 😬 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @ImperfectCJ agreed! The only time it really works I think is when people are reading their own bios or maybe comedians. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @Ruthiella ohhh. I have never heard her before this now I am morbidly curious. 3w
ImperfectCJ @ChaoticMissAdventures Yes! I really enjoyed Dinner for Vampires, a memoir, read by the author, who's an actor. 3w
TalesandTexts Agreed - i do like some books that are narrated by the author, but not all authors should read their books…it ruins the whole thing. 1d

I love that this story talks about the civil rights movement. I think it would be a great history lesson and conversation starter about standing up for the things you believe in. I would read this to a 3rd or 4th grade class.

The pictures in this book look like they were painted on the pages. The use of color shows the emotion on each page, anger, sadness, happiness, etc. There is a soft movement to the images as it paints a picture for the reader.

Mama Africa!: How Miriam Makeba Spread Hope with Her Song by Kathryn Erskine was published in 2017. This is a biography about Miriam Makeba's fight for equality. The people once called her Mama Africa as she used her voice to protest and sing.
