Into Thin Air | Jon Krakauer

Pickpick

I read parts of this book but mostly listened to it. Krakauer himself reads his account of the infamous 1996 Everest expedition that resulted in a tragedy. Through most of the story he remains the journalist and although that‘s admirable at times it felt more like reading a report instead of a NF novel. Too many facts and figures to my taste but other than that a sad and fascinating story.

BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I reread your review and know what you mean. I don‘t think it‘s the Danish translation! 4y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Thanks Meg ❤️ 4y
Suet624 I read the Outside Magazine article that he wrote immediately following the event. It was raw and he had not yet fully processed what had happened,. The article had quite a few details about the female hiker that he wasn't able to put in the book because she threatened him with legal action. I read the book too but it never quite felt the same as that article. I think of it often. 4y
BarbaraBB @Suet624 In my copy (maybe all copies) there is a long Epilogue in which he describes all he had to fight against after writing that article - and the book itself for that matter. (edited) 4y
Librarybelle Gorgeous photo! 4y
cariashley @Suet624 I had no idea about that or the Outside article - need to find it. I thought this book was incredible. 4y
Graywacke @Suet624 interesting. the book is pretty raw and unprocessed too. 4y
Suet624 @Graywacke Oh, definitely. I've read the book. It's just that he wrote the article almost immediately after the event and he was still beside himself with shock and grief. He was also very upset about Sandy Pittman's behavior and he was very explicit about all of her exploits. 4y
BarbaraBB @Suet624 @Graywacke I can imagine his attitude towards Sandy Pittman, especially just after the disaster. It must have been all so raw right after and she was all about the camera and publicity. 4y
Suet624 @barbarabb @graywacke Does he talk about her sexual behavior at base camp in the book and the sherpas reaction and concern about how disrespectful it was to the mountain? 4y
Graywacke @Suet624 that‘s all for @BarbaraBB I no longer remember. But i recall the movie goes into it, and I remember the thinking the book is less racy than the movie. 4y
