A great atmospheric novel by an excellent writer. It is the story of Annabelle and Bay, but I found Jane‘s evolution to be more intriguing. It was very interesting to see Jane move from the quiet mouse, always obeying her mother, to the semi-confidant (she‘s got a bit to go) woman that she was at the end of the novel. Another hit by Willig. #Tewread

I‘ll write out a more proper review later (I discovered I had a copy of this through NetGalley), but this is my favorite of Willig‘s books. I thought The Ashford Affair was hard to beat...well, this one beat it. The mystery and the love story in this were amazing, and some of the quotes had my heart flutter. Not to mention the ending! Thanks to everyone who took part in #TEWRead ! Comment any last thoughts below!

Librarybelle Confession: I had a crush on Mr Burke! Any man who would fight through a blizzard to rescue me from a potential killer deserves notice! I was suspicious of Mrs Van Duyvil and wondered if she had something to do with the murder but did get sidetracked with Mr Lacey. Willig wrote a winner with this one. Incidentally, if you use NetGalley, Willig‘s new book is available for request...it comes out this summer. 6y
Tamra I‘m glad you liked it too! 6y
litenthusiast I'm glad you enjoyed it. I also was sidetracked by Mr. Lacey. 6y

Stephaniereads1 I need to read it it‘s been ok@my tbr forever. 6y
Mollyanna I just finished and I enjoyed this too. I also got sidetracked by Mr Lacey and Anne. Great pick! 6y
CouronneDhiver I always end up falling for the villain and Mrs Van Duyvil was deliciously evil! 😈 I really enjoyed this book... might be worth signing up for NetGalley! 6y
Bklover This was my first book of hers and I really enjoyed it! 6y

I really enjoyed this book which is a historical murder mystery. I liked the character development and I was engrossed in the story. There were so many good quotes in the book that were witty and made me laugh. My favorite though is this quote: "You're asking the wrong person. I work in the theatre. Everything is an illusion." #TEWRead @Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver

CouronneDhiver Love that line 👌🏽 6y

We‘re on to our last section of the book! It looks like everyone has enjoyed the book so far; so glad everyone could join @CouronneDhiver and I on this #TEWRead . As an extra treat, this is also the book the #botmbuddyread selected for February. @TheBookHippie and @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks will be discussing it, starting this afternoon!

Bklover Yay! I jumped ahead and finished it. Good book! 6y
Tamra 👏🏾 I‘m so glad the buddy read promoted me to take it out of my TBR closet! (Who needs a shoe closet when you have books?) (edited) 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you for the shout out!!! 💞😘 6y

KarouBlue Enjoyable! 6y
litenthusiast I really enjoyed this book. I now need to read her other books! 6y
Mollyanna I‘m excited to finish this book this week! Thanks for the wonderful buddy read. Hopefully there‘s another on the horizon 🤔 6y
Librarybelle So glad you could join us, @Bklover @Tamra @MellieAntoinette @litenthusiast @Mollyanna ! @CouronneDhiver , we should think about our next choice for a #buddyread ! 6y
CouronneDhiver Just looked at which historical fiction is new at the library... maybe 6y
Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver The Paragon Hotel is on my to read list, and I just bought a copy of The Only Woman in the Room. All three sound good! 6y
litenthusiast @Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver Any of those 3 sound good. The Paragon Hotel and The Only Woman in the Room are both in my TBR box. 6y
Tamra @CouronneDhiver oh this sounds intriguing, The Aftermath, but I am open to anything too. (edited) 6y
CouronneDhiver Take your pick! I have to get in line at the library or order in, regardless of which one you go for... 🛍😃 6y
Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver It‘s a tough choice! Can you tell which would come in for you the quickest through the library? I do know that Marie Benedict also wrote The Other Einstein and The Carnegie‘s Maid...not sure if they would be any easier for you to get or not! 6y
CouronneDhiver Should we do a poll with our regular participants? @Librarybelle 6y
Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver I was actually thinking about that! That might be the best way to decide! 😁 6y
Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver I can post a poll and tag our fellow buddy readers! 6y
CouronneDhiver Yes! Let‘s do that. 6y
Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver Great! I‘ll post! 6y

I tried to pace my reading to match the dates of the #TEWRead but I really wanted to see who did what and how. I have a few VERY minor/picky issues that didn‘t take away from my enjoyment of this novel. I look forward to discussing this with the group next weekend. #LitsyAtoZ (3/26)

CouronneDhiver Yay! 😃 Thanks for joining in 6y
Librarybelle Thank you for joining us! I think several of us had a hard time pacing, which is fine! I‘m so far behind on the readings. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y

We‘re starting another week of #TEWRead ! I fell a little behind but should be able to catch up this week. I know a few of you finished and have enjoyed it so far. Any comments you wish to share about your reading?

Librarybelle @kspenmoll I know you said you probably won‘t get to this until February, so feel free to respond whenever you can! 6y
Tamra Did anyone else get a tad fatigued with the cat/mouse dialogue between the couples? Felt a little contrived. That was my only criticism really - otherwise it was a page turner! 6y
Melissa_J I thought it was a page turner, too. I don‘t want to say more because o forget at what point stuff happens and don‘t want to reveal stuff that doesn‘t happen until the next section! 6y

Tamra @Melissa_J agreed! 😺 6y
KarouBlue Very good so far. Not a fan of Mr. Lacey! Wandering what happened with Janie‘s “husband?” 6y
litenthusiast I'm liking it so far. I am a fan of her writing style. It makes me want to read the rest of her books. 6y
Pamwurtzler Really good so far! I just saw that she had another book coming out soon! 6y
Lauram I finished the book a few days ago. I‘m looking forward to the discussion! 6y

I got a little bit ahead of my #TEWRead buddy read this month but I couldn‘t help it with this one. I mean, you know you‘re really into a story when you have to switch from audio to an actual book because the narrator just isn‘t reading fast enough lol. It‘s safe to say I enjoyed this one immensely!

Librarybelle So glad you enjoyed it! 6y
CouronneDhiver Awesome! I‘m loving it too. Thanks for participating again. 👍🏽 6y

And, we‘re officially on the 2nd week of #TEWRead . From the posts I‘ve seen, it looks like everyone is enjoying the book. I am too! Any thoughts you have comment below (and it may be good to put these in the spoiler tag, just in case!). I‘m already trying to rate this with the other Willig books the group has read...I think Ashford Affair may still be my favorite, though I‘m only 80 pages into this one...

Tamra I need to stack Ashford Affair - this was my first Willig. 6y
Tamra No spoiler, but the cliff hangers keep you turning pages. 6y
litenthusiast This is the first Willig book I have read. I'm really loving it. Initially I felt her writing reminded me of Beatriz Williams, and I just read they wrote a book together. After TEW I'm definitely going to read more of her books. 6y

kspenmoll Not sure I can get to this this month 😢 6y
kspenmoll Got it from the library; maybe I can marathon it later in month & catch up for feb. 6y
Librarybelle @Tamra @litenthusiast I think this is the third of hers a few of us have read on Litsy. We did Ashford Affair and That Summer. We‘ve also read The Glass Ocean, where Willig and Beatriz Williams and Karen White co-authored. We‘ve enjoyed all we have read! 6y
Librarybelle @Pamwurtzler ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
Librarybelle @kspenmoll Whenever you can read it is fine...things happen! 6y
CouronneDhiver I liked all of our buddy reads so far, but this one is particularly good 👍🏽 6y
Lauram I‘m enjoying this book and the unfolding mystery. I thought this may have been a new author for me but I recognize an earlier book and am fairly confident I read and enjoyed 6y
Librarybelle @Lauram I‘ve yet to read that one of hers 6y
KarouBlue Im behind but wow we‘re the first two chapters a powerhouse! 6y
Librarybelle @MellieAntoinette I know what you mean! 6y
Shibbyfruitfly I‘m about halfway through Chapter 20 and I‘m having a hard time taking breaks for things like sleep and work 😂 (edited) 6y
Librarybelle @Shibbyfruitfly 🤣 I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying it! 6y
Mollyanna I‘m a little behind, but am enjoying the book so far. The mystery really has me intrigued. This is the third book of Willig‘s I‘ve read. I really enjoy her Pink Carnation series, and am slowly making my way through it. I love the pace of the buddy read! 6y
Librarybelle @Mollyanna We love the low key feel of this...more time to catch up when need be! 6y
Bklover I‘m all caught up now I believe. I think this is my first book by this author- love it so far! 6y
