The English Wife
The English Wife: A Novel | Lauren Willig
"Brings to life old world New York City and London with all the splendor of two of my favorite novels, The Age of Innocence and The Crimson Petal and the White. Mystery, murder, mistaken identity, romance--Lauren Willig weaves each strand into a page-turning tapestry." -Sally Koslow, author of The Widow Waltz "Her best yet...A dark and scintillating tale of betrayal, secrets and a marriage gone wrong that will have readers on the edge of their seats until the final breathtaking twist." -Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Orphan's Tale From New York Times bestselling author, Lauren Willig, comes this scandalous novel set in the Gilded Age, full of family secrets, affairs, and murder. Annabelle and Bayard Van Duyvil live a charmed life in New York: hes the scion of an old Knickerbocker family, she grew up in a Tudor house in England, they had a fairytale romance in London, they have three-year-old twins on whom they dote, and hes recreated her family home on the banks of the Hudson and named it Illyria. Yes, there are rumors that shes having an affair with the architect, but rumors are rumors and people will gossip. But then Bayard is found dead with a knife in his chest on the night of their Twelfth Night Ball, Annabelle goes missing, presumed drowned, and the papers go mad. Bays sister, Janie, forms an unlikely alliance with a reporter to try to uncover the truth, convinced that Bay would never have killed his wife, that it must be a third party, but the more she learns about her brother and his wife, the more everything she thought she knew about them starts to unravel. Who were her brother and his wife, really? And why did her brother die with the name George on his lips?

I‘ve had this book since 2017 when it was a #BOTM choice. Finally read it by listening on #audio. It was good, a solid mystery with a few compelling characters and a couple of baddies. I‘m glad I read it though it wasn‘t earth shattering. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

#UnpopularOpinion

I did not like this book. Took me three weeks to make my way through a medium length book, which is unheard of for me. I tire of snooty characters who focus their lives on social climbing. And the mystery lacked zing, since I didn‘t care about either the people who died or those struggling for answers. But yay, another #BOTM book off to the used book store!

This book was not terrible, but it was sooooo slooooowww...🐢🐢🐢The ending was okay, but after the big climax it dragged on for multiple more chapters. Took me a freaking week to read it. Oh well. Only 32 #BOTM books left to go before I‘m all caught up!! 😆🤦🏻‍♀️

The #leaves are just now turning in my area, though the tree in my front yard is still pretty green! I love the vibrancy of Fall‘s leaves and pulled this book from my shelves, not because of the content, but because the burnt orange and dark red colors of the cover evoke such autumn-like colors for me. I liked the book too, though it‘s not my favorite of Willig‘s books. #FallIsBooked

A great atmospheric novel by an excellent writer. It is the story of Annabelle and Bay, but I found Jane‘s evolution to be more intriguing. It was very interesting to see Jane move from the quiet mouse, always obeying her mother, to the semi-confidant (she‘s got a bit to go) woman that she was at the end of the novel. Another hit by Willig. #Tewread

Read for #BOTMbuddyread. I know some in the group weren't overly fond of this one, but I really enjoyed it! I think it was bc I read it just after reading Twelfth Night. So all of those parallels worked well for me. I also really enjoyed the time period and the atmosphere. The mystery worked well for me, too. I will definitely try to read more by Lauren Willig.

AmyG Oh wow...good timing! I didn‘t get the Twelfth Night references but I, too, really enjoyed the book. I love a book with lots of juicy secrets! 5y

#BOTMBUDDYREAD FINAL THOUGHTS : Did you enjoy this book??? Anything else you would like to discuss?

AmyG It was a slow start but I did enjoy it. I found it to be a good historical mystery. 5y
daena I enjoyed it too. Easy to read among other books. You could easily put it down and pick it back up again. There were times where i wanted to keep reading, in my eyes that‘s a keeper! 5y
Mitch Not for me this one.....I need a few characters I can get my teeth into. It was a little one dimensional and unbelievable for me. I did like the historical setting though and it gave a good sense of the time period. 5y
See All 15 Comments
TheBookHippie @Mitch I agree. However the Dutch culture is so much like this still I got a ton of laughs 🤦🏽‍♀️ 5y
BookwormAHN Loved it. 5y
catebutler I had mixed emotions about this one. I did like the root of the story and the setting and time period were right up my alley. But I didn‘t think most of the characters were likeable or developed, they were very surface level, which the author may have intended. I also thought several aspects of the plot were quite unbelievable and a little too modern even though it was a period book. I‘m still glad I read it though, and the discussions were great! 5y
catebutler The part I hated the most was Georgia and Annabelle‘s cousin. He was painted to be so evil and basically out to kill her, if he found her. And then at the end, he was made to be a somewhat sympathetic and likeable character. I was very confused. Especially since it was made to sound like he raped or abused Georgia in England?? I still don‘t quite know or understand this plot line. 5y
Karisa @catebutler Agreed. The Giles character seemed convoluted. I guess it was a red herring to keep you guessing. I just found him annoying. Too much going on unnecessarily throughout the story for me. Our book club discussions kept me reading. Otherwise, I would have probably bailed. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I liked this one, but didn't love it. I enjoyed it while I read it, but it probably isn't one I'd recommend to others. There was something about it that just didn't seem fully developed. 5y
catebutler @Karisa I think you‘re right about the red herring. He could have been fleshed out a lot more. The discussions kept me going too, it‘s been fun to read all the comments and see what everyone thought. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I agree with @CoffeeNBooks I liked it, but didn‘t love it and probably wouldn‘t recommend it. I‘m not familiar with Shakespeare so all of that was throwing me for a loop!! (edited) 5y
Mdargusch I too liked it but didn‘t love it. I thought the mystery part was good and I was compelled to keep reading. And I definitely did not guess the ending so extra points for that! 5y
Mdargusch @catebutler I totally agree with you - she tried to make the reader think he was evil and a rapist and then nothing. 5y
JaclynW @catebutler @karisa That bothered me about Giles too. Wishy washy. 5y
JaclynW @CoffeeNBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Mdargusch I'm with you. I liked it but didn't love it. There were parts that could have been fleshed out (or removed) and made more interesting. 5y

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q8: Can you believe it was THE MOTHER???

daena I loved to hate her! The end, her backing into the flames. Too much that woman. She gave me Joan Crawford vibes. 5y
AmyG I did NOT like her. So I was kind of happy it was her and happy the dam house burned to the ground. 5y
Redwritinghood It didn‘t seem realistic to me. 5y

TheBookHippie @daena WIRE HANGERS FOR SURE!!!! Just yikes!!! 5y
TheBookHippie @AmyG RIGHT?!?! 5y
TheBookHippie @Redwritinghood It unfortunately did to me. Scary!!!! 5y
Mitch @AmyG yep me too! Didn‘t like the backing into the flames bit though, because (apart from being a terrible cliche) she kept in control of that ending... I wanted her to loose control, panic and have to loose the fight with the fire ( I know that makes me not a very nice person🤣!) 5y
AmyG @Mitch Yes. Backig into the flames was way too dramatic. Seemed unnatural. 5y
BookwormAHN @AmyG @Mitch Her ending was way to gothic and dramatic. 5y
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN I gotta say I could not believe what I was reading !!! 5y
catebutler A twist worthy of Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie. Definitely a memorable ending to a highly unlikeable character. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I didn't like her at all. She was a horrible, thoughtless, selfish person. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I suspected her from the beginning when she was in no hurry for justice for Bay. 5y
Mdargusch It was like the wicked witch in Wizard of Oz melting. But I did not see that coming at all. 5y
JaclynW @daena @amyg @TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @catebutler @mitch @amyg @Redwritinghood I liked the ending and thought it was a fitting demise for such a horrible woman. It also seemed appropriate that SHE even controlled that. Ha! Evil, pure evil. 5y

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q7: Burke and Janie thoughts ? I never came to like their story. How did you like their love story? What do you think will happen with them?

daena I liked them. But it felt super far fetched for me. 5y
AmyG @daena Yes. I found it to be a bit far-fetched and also forced. Like Janie had to have a love interest...who walks miles to save her. And thought they are from different worlds, none of it matters because love. A bit hokey. 5y
Redwritinghood I didn‘t find their love story convincing. It would have been better if we had seen more of it as it was developing. 5y
See All 20 Comments
TheBookHippie @Redwritinghood It was like filer!!! 5y
TheBookHippie @AmyG hokey is the right word!!! 5y
TheBookHippie @daena super far fetched just not believable to me 5y
Mitch @AmyG well said.... super hokey, too hokey, unbelievably hokey! 5y
Mitch I also thought the writing struggled her... I‘m not sure the author could write the love interest scenes as well as other parts of the story... 5y
AmyG @Mitch Agreed. I think she struggled with the love scenes because of the time period. She tried tonkeep them within the norma for that time...while tryig to make them a bit “steamy”. Didn‘t work well. 5y
TheBookHippie @Mitch I think it could have been left out 😳🤣🤷🏽‍♀️ just have them as friends .. 5y
TheBookHippie @AmyG probably not her strength. 5y
Karisa I couldn't quite believe that one. I think without the Anne history with Burke that whole subplot would've been much stronger. 5y
TheBookHippie @Karisa just not well thought out maybe ???? The Anne thing was ANNOYING (edited) 5y
BookwormAHN I thought they seemed a little to convenient. 5y
catebutler I would have preferred Anne not having anything to do with Burke. It made it seem like Burke was a bit wishy-washy and a poor taste in character when he was meant to be able to see the truth and seek it out. Although that being said, he did meet and fall in love when he was young and an actor, and like he said. Being chased away and getting a job as a journalist was the best thing that happened to him. Maybe he grew up. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think the Burke part could have been written in without his history with Anne and his relationship with Janie. You all described it well: far-fetched and hokey. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks By this time I really didn‘t care 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Mdargusch I agree with you @mitch it definitely seemed like the story was much better when romance wasn‘t thrown in. 5y
JaclynW @CoffeeNBooks Agreed! @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookHippie @catebutler @BookwormAHN @karisa @mitch @amyg @daena @Redwritinghood I liked Burke. I liked Janie. #BOTMBUDDYREAD Q6: Anne surprised me by forcefully sticking up for Annabelle ! She redeemed herself quite a bit in this last section. It also appears she will take good care of the children. What were your thoughts here? Anne was quite the force to be reckoned with there at the end! Wow.

daena Anne was hands down my favorite character. Even in the moments where she frustrated me and made me roll my eyes. There were lots of layers to her character. 5y
Redwritinghood I liked Anne even though she was sarcastic a little too often. She was just more practical than the others. 5y
TheBookHippie @daena She really was written very well. Tons of depth. 5y
See All 12 Comments
Mitch Too little too late for me! But I was pleased she begun to act better. 5y
Karisa @Mitch Yes, Anne was so mean the whole way through. I couldn't quite trust her turnaround. Good that Janie and the twins were not alone though. 5y
BookwormAHN I think she may have been in love with Bay but eventually respected Annebelle and that's why she took the kids. I also think she didn't want to ever marry again. 5y
catebutler I actually found her turnaround to be a bit unbelievable. The optimist in me, liked how she softened towards the end and kind of justified her bad behaviour throughout because of how poorly treated she was by her aunt. But it did bother me immensely how she treated Janie and I also didn‘t like how she tried to upstage Georgie all the time, I feel like she was the home wrecker when it came to Bay and Annabelle, especially with the architect. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I can't decide how I feel about Anne. It really bothered me how she taunted Georgie with the Bay & Pruyn situation. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @catebutler I totally agree with you!!! 5y
JaclynW @CoffeeNBooks @catebutler @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I did not like how she treated others. But I liked her strong will. Hopefully she uses that power for good now! 5y
Mdargusch I‘m feeling a little like you @catebutler it was a little unrealistic to me too. 5y
rjsthumbelina @CoffeeNBooks I couldn't stand her for that, either. But I felt like it was her guilt over what happened and the fact the she really did love Bay (he was the only person she seemed to care about at all) that pushed her to change in the end. 5y

daena I really liked Georgie. 5y
Redwritinghood I liked her but was surprised that she turned out so level-headed considering her background. 5y
AmyG The writer made it seem as if Georgie was a shady character in the beginning. The more I read, the more truthful and genuine she became. She was a woman trying to survive and make a life for herself and her children. 5y

TheBookHippie @AmyG that‘s a great summary of how I felt too! I really came to like him! 5y
BookwormAHN I liked Georgie, I hope somehow she survived. 5y
catebutler I did like Georgie, and I think her character developed over the course of the book. It showed the depth and strength of her character right to the end. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I really liked Georgie, and the fact that she was so strong. I felt so bad for her that she had to endure the childhood that she did- so sad! 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Having come from a bad childhood I was rooting from her... I was sad that she didn‘t survive... 😥 5y

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q4: Janie realized in PANIC that the brooch aka the jewel was her mother‘s slowly releasing the truth ...did you figure it out before this ???

daena Yep. That was our clue. I put that one together. But it felt kind of anti climactic for me for some reason? 5y
AmyG I knew the person who wore that brooch was the killer. I didn‘t figure out it was the mother. At one point I thought it was Anne. 5y
Redwritinghood Honestly, I was clueless. I‘m not very good at mysteries. 5y

TheBookHippie @Redwritinghood I hardly ever read them. It‘s interesting to in this story! 5y
Mitch @TheBookHippie me too...a lot of ‘oh, really‘ 5y
BookwormAHN I felt like things were pointing to Anne, but that would have been to obvious. But I didn't guess the Mom. 5y
catebutler I did have my suspicions about it being her mother, but the reveal was fun. Her mad need for control led to the demise of the one person she loved the most, herself. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I suspected it was the mother‘s or Anne‘s... 5y
JaclynW @catebutler The reveal was fun. @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Those were suspects too! 5y
TheBookHippie @catebutler That is exactly right !!!! Very well put! 5y
catebutler @TheBookHippie I think that‘s why her committing suicide in the fire actually worked for me. When the truth was released to the public, she wouldn‘t have been able to stand the notoriety or the snubbing of high society. It actually was quite humorous, when it was mentioned that her funeral was empty and society had turned on her. A very befitting ending to an unlikeable character. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @catebutler yes!!!! So fitting!! 5y
JaclynW @catebutler Well suited end for that evil character! 5y

daena I think she could have fled. I am not sure if the description of her heavy bodice was a rationalization for her drowning or a way to distract us from her fleeing. 5y
AmyG I got the impression she was in that water...had drowned. 5y
Redwritinghood Not sure. Might make a good sequel! 5y

Mitch @AmyG me too x 5y
Karisa That did seem to be ambiguous. The bed in the old house seemed to be leaving the door open for her maybe still alive. I don't think she'd leave her twins though. 5y
BookwormAHN I think she drowned. I also don't think she would have left the kids. 5y
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN I‘d like to imagine she made a deal with Anne. That they are all together. ❤️ 5y
catebutler I honestly don‘t know! I could see it played both ways, but I do agree with others, the idea of her leaving her children, knowing how much she loved them, makes me lean a bit towards her drowning. 5y
TheBookHippie @catebutler I can‘t see her leaving the kids either. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think she drowned. If she had been able to get away, I think she would have figured out a way to get back to her children. 5y
JaclynW @AmyG @CoffeeNBooks I agree. She drowned. She wouldn't have left her kids. But it surely is ambiguous @karisa . @Redwritinghood It really could make for an interesting sequel. 5y

Karisa @Mitch I agree. I thought it was a great choice for her. Too bad she didn't have that chance. Of all the characters, Georgie and her daughter were the only ones I was starting to root for. 5y
BookwormAHN I think she would have. 5y
JaclynW I think she would have and should have gotten a divorce. She wanted something more, something real. She deserved that. 5y
catebutler It was very frustrating to me how he acted towards the end, especially with all that she had done and put up with for him. I do hope that she would have divorced and gone her own way. It seems like she was always protecting and doing everything for others, and sacrificing her own happiness and wants. 5y
JaclynW @catebutler I agree with you. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think she would have, also. She was a strong woman who wanted more for herself and her children. 5y
CoffeeNBooks @Mitch I agree! The pictures are always great! 5y
rjsthumbelina @daena @AmyG you guys are so right - her kids' futures would have motivated her. @catebutler I was so frustrated too! Georgie deserved better. She was too busy protecting Bay to be able to live for herself. I think she felt obligated bc he saved her by taking her away from the life she had in London. But it seemed like she had finally had enough and was ready to stand on her own 5y

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q1: Annabelle!!!! She is alive! What did you think ?! “If you don‘t like the truth don‘t come looking for it” Georgie says to Giles, do you think Giles knew? How do you like how this ended ?

daena I want the Annabelle spin off book! 5y
AmyG Ha! @daena Right? I don‘t think Giles knew at all. And yes...I love that Annabelle left with her love to start a new life. (edited) 5y
Redwritinghood I was also left wanting to know more about what Annabelle was up to. 5y
See All 16 Comments
JaclynW @daena That would be great! 5y
JaclynW @AmyG I loved it too! I think Giles was in the dark. It was meant to be that way. They were successful! 5y
TheBookHippie @daena ME TOO!!!! Her story must be good!! 5y
Karisa @daena Yes, I could see Janie taking Georgie's twins to Annabelle for a fresh start away from the city. 5y
BookwormAHN I loved that she got away. 5y
catebutler I thought this twist was quite clever! And like many have mentioned, I‘d love to read more about her story in Australia. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I loved that Annabelle was alive and well, and that Giles had no clue! 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I loved that she got away and had a life of her own!! 5y
JaclynW @catebutler I wonder if the author has plans for a sequel that would tell more about the real Annabelle in Australia?? 5y
rjsthumbelina @AmyG @JaclynW @CoffeeNBooks I don't think Giles had any idea that she wasn't dead. I liked watching him find out that she got away from him! I don't feel like Giles got what he deserved in the end, though. I am happy that Annabelle, at least, got her happy ending. @daena @Karisa I would definitely buy a book about Annabelle! 5y
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina I know! He was slimey!! He got off too easy! 5y

This book fell squarely in the middle for me - not great, but not horrible. Overall, there just wasn‘t enough there for me. The setting and characters weren‘t fully developed and the insights into the budding romance weren‘t enough to get me invested. The murder mystery and Georgie‘s background, however, were better developed, but not enough to make me really love this book. #botmbuddyread #botm 3⭐️

A historical mystery romance, set in New York & London around the turn of the nineteenth century. Whilst I liked some of the historical setting, it wasn't enough to pull me through. Constant referencing & name dropping - from Richard II & Anne Boleyn to Jack the Ripper & Edgar Allan Poe was annoying and the characters, mostly driven by 'appearance' and the need to maintain social standing are all thoroughly unlikeable. Not for me...

catiewithac I hated this one, too! 5y
Andrew65 Still got a quarter of the book to go but still not doing it for me either. 5y
Mitch @catiewithac yeah, so, didn‘t enjoy this! 5y

Good but not quite great. There's just way too much going on in this book. Book was meh but still led to great discussions in book buddies meet up.

Recommended for serious lovers of Shakepeare though. 😊

Andrew65 I‘m still struggling through. (edited) 5y

I‘m so happy I finally checked this book off my #mounttbr list! Thank you for letting me join in on this #botmbuddyread! It‘s been fun to read everyone‘s comments!

I give this book 3 1/2 ⭐️ because 1) I was compelled to finish reading it and 2) I thought the mystery was a good one and I did not guess the ending.

I‘m not sure I‘m a fan of the author‘s writing style but I think I will try another of her books in the future.

Andrew65 I‘d agree about her writing style, but yet to finish. 5y
Mdargusch Have you read anything else by her? @Andrew65 I just wonder if all her books are like this one? 5y
Andrew65 @Mdargusch No, this was the first. 5y

#BOTMBUDDYREAD FINAL THOUGHTS?
Anything we missed???
Thoughts?
Honestly I don‘t know whether to throw the book, try to figure it out or if I like it. Undecided.

Mitch I‘m feeling grateful it‘s a quick read and a pretty cover! 5y
TheBookHippie @Mitch BAHAHAHAHA. Oh that‘s good! I love discussing it anyway. I think it‘s trying to hard. That‘s what it feels like to me. 5y
JaclynW @Mitch It is a pretty cover! 5y
See All 39 Comments
JaclynW @TheBookHippie I want to figure out the mystery! It's driving me nuts! Maybe there is the whole kitchen sink that has been thrown in...good point. It does seem a but much. It's making my head hurt. Hopefully we get clear answers and aren't left to wonder. 5y
Andrew65 @Mitch I‘m not feeling the quick read, feels like purgatory reading it at times and time seems to stop! 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie I think I‘d agree that it is trying too hard. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Andrew65 I agree!!! I‘ve read The Breakdown in one day, but this book is like a school project... 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ 5y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 it‘s homework 😂😂🤷🏽‍♀️😳 5y
kspenmoll @JaclynW I want all the secrets revealed & mystery solved. It seems to be taking awhile to@get there but maybe it will all make sense in the end?! 5y
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookhippie It‘s like maths homework when you missed the lesson, and I love maths! Just a chore! 5y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 I sit at my kitchen table to read this book and make questions 😂 usually I‘m with blanket warm beverage and a sticky note !! 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie That doesn‘t surprise me. I prefer books that have an easier reading style and more dialogue. 5y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 SAME!!! otherwise ...well it‘s school. We have enough school 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 @TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Even more so like school work because we are supposed to be comparing/contrasting Shakespeare!! 😁 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW I can‘t do that as I don‘t know Shakespeare. 😔😴 5y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW Shakespeare is on the table too!! 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie We definitely do, thankfully got a week off as totally exhausted. Been a tough half-term. 5y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 It‘s been unreal. We‘ve had a ton of snow days. This helped. We have Monday off then back at it!!! 5y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 hope you get must needed rejuvenation. 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Thanks, going to hide away in my reading and take in a few days at the sea. We‘ve had little in the way of snow but children been in strange moods.... lack of sun! 5y
CoffeeNBooks I'm enjoying it, for the most part, and looking forward to reading the final section to see how it all wraps up. 5y
Karisa @TheBookHippie You've done a terrific job with 5he questions! I feel like I'm in too deep now and need to finish. Not fully enjoying it but need plot resolutions. @Andrew65 Yes, homework-ish! 😂 But at least our classmates are wonderful! 5y
JaclynW @Karisa Great classmates!! 😊 5y
TheBookHippie @Karisa awe thanks !!! I agree I so enjoy my classmates and they make it fun!!! I can‘t wait to read the end!! 5y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 Good for you! Lack of sun and outside is wearing on my little readers on top of the news, their families being separated, worries of deportation, ICE RAIDS...hunger... all of it. 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie So much to deal with at such a young age and then we wonder why our children can‘t perform in a classroom 😰 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW @Karisa The best classmates. 5y
Andrew65 @Karisa @TheBookHippie I agree, a brilliant job with the questions. 👏🙌👍 5y
Andrew65 @CoffeeNBooks I agree, need to see how it‘s all resolved now. 5y
AmyG @TheBookHippie Yes...excellent questions. Really made me think. And your poor “kids” . What a tragedy they even have to think of these things. I am enjoying the book...and want to see how it all ties up. 5y
TheBookHippie @AmyG I have a harder time with people who think my beautiful little readers WHO ARE LEGAL born here should have their parents dragged away or have them all behind a wall so we don‘t all turn brown. Seriously this was said to my face...day in the life 🤯🤬😭 5y
AmyG What makes some human beings “better” than others? I don‘t get it. @TheBookHippie (edited) 5y
TheBookHippie @AmyG my feelings exactly. Sigh. Ignorance on their part. 5y

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q7: Janie and Burke. Do you think they‘ll end up together? Will they find the truth? Do you like this part of the story?

Mitch Hate this part of the story..” lips on lips, palms on flesh. ....could taste the whiskey on Mr Burke‘s tongue”. It all reads like a trashy, trashy romance novel that was crammed every over used cliche into every sentence ! It was toe curling! 5y
TheBookHippie @Mitch I skipped over it else I‘d lose the contents of my stomach 🤮 5y
Mitch @TheBookHippie 🤣🤮🤣 5y

Stephaniereads1 I think she is lonely. I don‘t think she will ever disobey her mother so probably not. 5y
JaclynW @mitch @TheBookHippie @Stephaniereads1 I'm not certain how I feel about Janie and Burke yet. Janie deserves someone genuine. She's trying to be her true self within her strict confines. I want to see her break free and get something that SHE wants. The involvement with Burke and Anne turned me off a bit to Janie and Burke. What did you think of that part? 5y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I want her to live HER life apart from all this. Then she can be herself and live her win true life?? Not with Burke though... figures about Anne...🤮 5y
Andrew65 @Mitch @TheBookHippie I have to agree with both of you! ‘A trashy romance novel‘ sums it up well. Burke was with Anne, so that is enough to switch off him but then again he was on,y 16. I wouldn‘t be surprised if they end up together though. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I want to see Janie happy with someone other than Burke.. too much water under the bridge there!!! 5y
kspenmoll @Andrew65 @Mitch @Stephaniereads1 @JaclynW I also hope Jane can break free & find a place for herself in the world with going to a mother‘s control to a man‘s. The fact that Anne has been involved with him makes him suspect even if he was just 16. 5y
Andrew65 @kspenmoll There is something about him that concerns me too. 5y
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I agree!!!!! Find someone else!!!! 5y
CoffeeNBooks I'm not sure how I feel about the Janie/Burke situation. I agree that the kissing scene was a bit much- it seemed out of place, and the writing of it seemed oddly written and out of place in the story. I think maybe Burke has good intentions and is trying to redeem himself, but I'm not sure. I think Janie needs to get out from the entire circle of society in which she's confined. 5y
Karisa @JaclynW I so agree! That whole, by the way Mr. Burke was once involved with Anne subplot was disturbing! Really?! Isn't this a very big city? He's not even in their social circle. The chances of him knowing her are minuscule. He's Janie's only ray of hope though... bleh 5y
JaclynW @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Probably so! Too much water under that bridge! 🙄 5y
JaclynW @Karisa Yes, disturbing. Weird coincidences. 5y
AmyG I‘m with @CoffeeNBooks on this. I am not sure. Their part seems like a whole other book. I am curious to see how that turns out. Prt of me thinks Janie may give up all of it for him. 5y
Mdargusch I so agree with you @Mitch ! Listening to it on audio , the narrator makes it even more trashy. 5y
Mitch @Mdargusch oh my goodness. I do t think I could take listening to it out Loud! 🤣 5y
TheBookHippie @Mdargusch oh goodness no, my ears!!!! 🙄🤢 5y
TheBookHippie @Mitch I couldn‘t listen to it 🤣 I could hardly read it . 5y
