Summer Fun | Jeanne Thornton
post image
Pickpick

This is a difficult book to review. It‘s a novel with a lot of layers. Thornton writes in the author‘s note about the act of projection, and particularly the type of mythologizing that happens in fandoms. The novel is very much an exploration of this idea, with The Beach Boys and the mythology surrounding Brian Wilson as the model. It‘s essentially a Beach Boys myth retelling with Brian recast as a trans woman. ⬇️
#translit #lambdaawardwinner

psalva It's all told through letters written by the MC, Gala (also a trans woman) to the character of Diane, the founder of the Get Happies. Overall, it's got an uncanny valley quality that seems so real but also not quite right. It makes for an unsettling reading experience in a way that made me question what what was real and what was the character projecting. ⬇️ 2y
psalva In the end, I found this quite interesting and thought provoking, even if it wasn't a happy story. I would also say I think knowledge of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson will add to the experience. 2y
Reggie Is there a Manson side character somewhere in there? Also, by any chance do you have my book Red X? Because I never got it in the mail and I know you were moving and it could have just as easily been put into a box or maybe you put the package in your car but it slipped under a seat. If you could check for me, please. Thanks!🙂 1y
psalva @Reggie No Manson character as far as I could tell but there is a character who goes to a commune. I didn‘t consider it might be related to Manson but it‘s possible. And I‘m really sorry about Red X! I meant to email you. It‘s in the mail but I just sent it the other day. You should get it this coming week some time. It did get bit lost in the shuffle but I didn‘t forget about it- I apologize for the delay! 1y
Reggie No worries, I just wanted to make sure that it didn‘t get lost in mail purgatory somewhere. Thanks! 1y

After writing Apsara Engine, Som started writing this graphic memoir in the form of a comics journal, using the character of Anjali, a cis woman, as a stand-in for herself, a trans woman. On the podcast T4T, Som described this process as a form of therapy which led her to deepened understanding of her own identity. ⬇️

psalva When Som came out as trans, Anjali was “free to go off and do her own thing,” which is when her character diverged and developed into more than just a mirror for Som‘s experience. It‘s a story of process and self-discovery, full of music references and food (there‘s a recipe for kichuri at the end). 5 ⭐️ for me! 2y

I enjoyed this graphic memoir of the author‘s experience growing up in the UK (I thought it was Boston at first) and his journey of self-discovery as a trans boy. The story was handled with honesty. It doesn‘t shy away from depicting the difficult moments of self-doubt or criticism, or the times people aren‘t accepting, but it has an overall tone of finding joy and being true to yourself above all else. ⬇️

psalva The meta moments were fun- I liked how Lewis‘ older self comments on the past or when characters talk back to him as the writer. 2y

I savored each and every story in this anthology. I love speculation fiction, I'm super picky about sci-fi, I don't have much success with fantasy. But I can't think of a single story that didn't delight. All of them were fantastic and fierce. These stories are incredibly diverse in perspective, imagination, and style. Best of all, I ended up with a slew of new-to-me writers to keep an eye on! Don't miss out on this one. #ownvoices #translit #sff

Complex, diverse queer characters, dystopia, time travel, resistance. This novel was super disconcerting because you get social commentary as a natural part of the world-building (so many parallels!). This novel is transfeminist, intersectional, and anti-capitalist. It calls out TERFs, SWERFs, people who tokenize marginalized friends, and more. Lovely writing, quick pace, exciting storyline. A #selfpublished gem! #ownvoices #translit #transgender

Almost Perfect | Brian Katcher

Panpan

So many issues with this book. Transphobia, homophobia, fat-shaming... And that's just to start. I hated this one.
If you have time for it, I posted a longer, more detailed review here: https://bennilovesbooks.wordpress.com/2017/08/11/review-almost-perfect-by-brian-...
I recommend reading If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo instead. It handles this topic MUCH better.

Lily and Dunkin | Donna Gephart
Panpan

NOPE. Lily's transition centers cis feelings, and the author doesn't differentiate between gender expression and gender identity. Once Lily confides in Dunkin, his narrative (not dialogue, yet) should have changed. But he didn't refer to her as Lily until the END, when she shows up at the school dance in a dress, wearing makeup. This reinforces the harmful idea that you have to look a certain way before others will see you as "really truly trans."

lovelybookshelf I chose "pan" instead of "bail" because of the bipolar representation. Dunkin's story was moving, and I learned a lot. 7y
Bibliogeekery I really appreciate your review. I haven't read this one yet but it's definitely been on my list. #transbooks 7y
lovelybookshelf @Bibliogeekery I was super disappointed because I'd seen it on tons of #translit lists, and once in a while a cis author gets it right but sadly, not here. 😐 I'm going to write a fuller review on my blog soon. 7y

Peddler410 Thank you for your review. In Duncan‘s defense, it is Lily who tells him to use the name Tim. Maybe the author was wrong to write it that way? I‘m not sure. 6y
lovelybookshelf @Peddler410 The narrative should have used Lily once Lily came out to Duncan. The dialogue is a different story, because Lily didn't want to be outed to others yet. But the way this (cis) author went about it felt wrong because she reinforces the idea that you have to appear a certain way before your transness is valid. 😞 This is an ongoing problem trans and nonbinary people face with cis people and it has very harmful repercussions. 6y
Peddler410 Thanks @lovelybookshelf I understand the point you were making more clearly now. As a cis reader, I agree with what you are saying though I did not pick up on it as I was reading. Thank you for educating me, sincerely. 6y
lovelybookshelf @Peddler410 you're very welcome! 💜 6y

Long Black Veil | Jennifer Finney Boylan
Pickpick

I love how JFB tells a story, the way she allows it to unfold in its own time. LONG BLACK VEIL contains elements of a thriller, a mystery, a hint of paranormal, but is still a wonderfully character-driven piece of literary fiction. The theme of a trans person living in stealth was profound. I think those of us who are younger, who've always had online community, can't fully grasp how isolating this was. Great read. #ownvoices #translit

Reese_Pearly.Pages I'm reading an arc of this now. It's definitely a little spooky so far. 8y
