This was a good read, set in a Liverpool, England.

First book in the DS Nathan Cody Series, where he is investigating the murders of fellow police officers. Nathan himself is struggling to cope with events from a previous case. I look forward to continuing this series.

This book had bad reviews; although it wasn‘t very realistic (survivor will not go looking for the abuser unless for absolute revenge) & I have questions unanswered, it was still very unnerving. Several things in the story reminded me very much of the real story of Colleen Stan, who was kidnapped & tortured for 7 years by Cameron & Janice Hooker in Chico, CA during the 70s. He kept her bound, in a box under the bed, with a special box that he ⬇️

JenniferEgnor kept over her head which was insulated inside so that no one would hear her scream. Before Colleen, there was another victim that he kidnapped, tortured and murdered, but that was never found: Marie Elizabeth Spannhake. Cameron was never found guilty of murder; Janice got off in exchange for information. The story was made famous via Unsolved Mysteries; lifetime movie ‘The Girl in the Box‘; book ‘The Perfect Victim‘, tv show Paranormal Witness (edited) 4mo
JenniferEgnor I want to reach out to the author and ask if her if any of her inspiration came from this true and horrific story. 4mo

My parents couldn‘t understand why I had moved to New York City so quickly in the first place, while I was still recovering and especially considering all my fears. They didn‘t understand how much safer it felt to have crowds of people right outside my door at all times. In New York City, I tried to explain, there is always someone to hear you scream.

JenniferEgnor ***I feel like this is a very good paragraph that tells us a lot about trauma. We should listen. 🤍 4mo

For years, I've heard about this classic horror novel. Having read it now, I can appreciate why it has the status it does, but it just wasn't for me.

It's a bit like Lord of the Flies, only with spoiled rich kids without a conscience who aren't fighting to survive, they're just crazy.

Horrifying, disturbing, and authentic. Ketchum, with crystal clear prose, details the malevolence of silent compliance and the horrors of abuse to a degree that is genuinely shocking. Not sure I‘ll ever read this one again, but it‘ll always stick with me.
