Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas (Revised) | Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis

Pickpick

#unusualnarrators Seen @Pruzy post and remember this book I read in school, a classic! "Be aware that frankness is the prime virtue of a dead man," writes the narrator of The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas. But while he may be dead,he is surely one of the liveliest characters in fiction,a product of one of the most remarkable imaginations in all of literature, Brazil's greatest novelist of the nineteenth century, Machado de Assis. #AndItsAugust

Pruzy Looking forward to reading a Brazilian classic! 7y

Bookwitchery

Still playing catch-up, my choice for #anditsaugust #unusualnarrators is Anne Rice's Servant of the Bones. The main character was a Hebrew living in Babylon. The Babylonian god Marduk befriends him, and this distresses his family. He is chosen as a sacrifice, to become a gold covered statue. The witch betrays him, and he becomes enslaved to the gold- coated bones of his mortal remains.

Bookwitchery He then has to do the bidding of whomever possesses his bones, good or evil. He's trying to understand what he is and gradually becomes less obedient. I'd say an ancient genii who is a victim of a sacrifice makes am unusual narrator, don't you? 7y

#anditsaugust #day8 - #unusualnarrators

This book has really stayed with me, in large part thanks to the elegant twist involving the 3 narrators (more clever readers than I probably caught it sooner, but I was surprised).

I don't know about you but I reckon that crack (Delicious Foods) and a porcupine (Memoirs of a Porcupine) make for some rather unique narrators in literature.

Nutshell | Ian McEwan

In what is sure to become a classic in the #UnusualNarrators genre, I pick Nutshell by Ian McEwan. It is a story about a woman separating from her husband to be with his brother as told from the viewpoint of her fetus. It has been likened to Hamlet, and I definitely see it. #AndItsAugust

RealLifeReading Did you like it? 7y
Pruzy @RealLifeReading I thought it was really great. I'm a McEwan fan to begin with, though, so I might be biased 😝 7y
Sha0102 I loved this book too. McEwan is genious! 7y
Pruzy @Sha0102 He is definitely one of my favourite authors. Which book of his is your favourite? 7y

Jos is far from an unusual character type, but Lowachee does fascinating things with his narration. The book starts in second person past tense, shifts into first person past, and ends in first person present--and each change happens for a concrete reason tied to where Jos is at in his emotional arc. I've read few books that handle the technique so well. #unusualnarrators #anditsaugust
