The extraordinary #1New York Timesbestseller that is now a major motion picture, Markus Zusak's unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul.It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time. From the Hardcover edition.

I tried reading this book a few years ago, but I just couldn't get into it at the time. I plan on revisiting it at some point.

The line with the snowman in the basement though has stuck with me since then.

Death narrates the Book Thief's story and in doing so, death itself is awed by life. It is sick of doing it's job and the best part is, Liesel Meminger and Rudy Steiner's friendship or I can say, the untold feelings of love. I must say, however, that Leisel's confession came at the wrong time.
What about the death of Rosa Hubermann and Hans Hubermann? That was unexpected. At least I am glad that the Jewish fist fighter survived.

This was a great book, with a truly unique twist, not only in the writing style (which was excellent), but also in the manner in which the story in conveyed. I loved it!

"Yes. The fuhrer decided that he would rule the world with words. "I will never fire a gun", he said. "I will not have to"

"...He was not a stupid man at all. His first plan of attack was to plant the words in as many areas of his homeland as possible. He planted them day and night, and cultivated them. He watched them grow, until eventually, great forests of words had risen throughout Germany. It was a nation of farmed thoughts."

BOOKS I READ IN SEPTEMBER

I haven't had much time to read lately but I managed at least two.

Both were pretty amazing, The Book Thief in a tragically catching setting of WWII while The Children of Blood and Bone was a beautiful story from an African-like kingdom where magic has been forced to disappear. I do recommend both pieces.

So many people died.. especially the people I got emotionally attached to, god, I cried so many times, this was the most heartbreaking, yet amazing book I‘ve read.
I love the fact it was written in “deaths perspective” I wish more books had something like that!!

I just finished rereading The Book Thief and Night over the weekend. Such powerful and heart wrenching stories that remind me of the horrific acts that can be justified by hate. I started to wonder about how I could teach my nieces (ages 6 & 4) about this history and found a book that I had forgotten about. “let the Celebration Begin” is an amazing children‘s story about a challenging topic. The illustrations are breathtaking. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A memorable read full of beautiful moments. All in all I loved the story and the characters. The fate of Liesel, Hans and Max broke my heart in a tragic finale. Yet there were a few things that bugged me; mainly the incorrect German grammar. I was also not keen on how the ending and major events had been spoilt before they happened. In a way it was understandable as the narrator was death itself but still it took away from the excitement.

quote
LaraS
The Book Thief | Markus Zusak
post image

“The truth is, for the first two years, I had a lot of trouble with Death as the narrator...I scrapped Death altogether and decided Liesel should narrate.
The new problem I had was that because I'm Australian, as the writing progressed, I now had the most Australian-sounding German girl in the history of all writing everywhere (despite my partly German upbringing).“

quote
LaraS
The Book Thief | Markus Zusak
post image

“I also hope that readers of any age will see another side of Nazi Germany, where certain people did hide their Jewish friends to save their lives (at the risk of their own). I wanted them to see people who were unwilling to fly the Nazi flag, and boys and girls who thought the Hitler Youth was boring and ridiculous. If nothing else, there's another side that lives beneath the propaganda reels that are still so effective decades later.“

quote
LaraS
The Book Thief | Markus Zusak
post image

The book I borrowed from the library has a bunch of “bonus material“ at the end, and I really enjoyed reading about Zusak's process in writing this book. These are some of my fav parts:
“Before publication, there's always a moment when you suddenly understand that if you keep working on the book, you're going to start hurting it. You might be making this more correct, but never more right.“

The Book Thief | Markus Zusak

People observe the colors of a day only at its beginnings and ends, but to me it‘s quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations, with each passing moment. A single hour can consist of thousands of different
colors. Waxy yellows, cloud-spat blues. Murky darknesses.

quote
zahra7

It suffices to say that at some point in time, I will be standing over you, as genially as possible. Your soul will be in my arms. A color will be perched on my shoulder. I will carry you gently away.

I could introduce myself properly, but it‘s not really necessary. You will know me well enough and soon enough.
