The Fifth Season
The Fifth Season | N. K. Jemisin
"Intricate and extraordinary." - New York Times on The Fifth Season (A New York Times Notable Book of 2015) The start of a new fantasy trilogy by Hugo, Nebula & World Fantasy Award nominated author N.K. Jemisin. THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS... FOR THE LAST TIME. A season of endings has begun. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy. For more from N. K. Jemisin, check out: The Inheritance Trilogy The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms The Broken Kingdoms The Kingdom of Gods The Inheritance Trilogy (omnibus edition) Shades in Shadow: An Inheritance Triptych (e-only short fiction) The Awakened Kingdom (e-only novella) Dreamblood Duology The Killing Moon The Shadowed Sun

Now this is certainly not your typical run-of-the-mill scifi/dystopian story. I loved the unique world - very imaginative and original. It does take a bit of time to get into. Also, I'm not a fan of the second person perspective. But once you get in the groove, it's quite a ride!

I have tried and dnf‘d this book 3 times in the past 2 years I have owned it. Something compelled me to keep the book and keep trying. Started it again last night and am now over 100 pages in. Slightly confused, but really intrigued now. I have a feeling I will be purchasing the rest of the series. Maybe I just wasn‘t ready for it before.

Lauredhel Once it sinks its teeth into you, it won't let go. 3d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really enjoyed it, it takes awhile until all the threads start coming together, but it‘s worth it. I hope the 3rd Times the charm for you. 3d
mjdowens Finished it last night. SO STINKING GOOD!! So glad I have the box set coming today so I can binge the rest. 16h

I‘d recommend it. What an interesting story and unique voice. I‘ve never read anything like it. It takes a while to understand what‘s going on, but it is such a rewarding read. Fantastic story. Excellent characterization. Essun, Syenite, and Damaya are well-written. Characters you can identify with, love, & really feel for. The story is captivating. I screamed out loud a few times.

This was supposed to be a slow burn for July‘s book club...except I just finished it today! I wasn‘t sure how the pieces of this book fit together at first, appropriate in a way. But it definitely pulled me in with the world and characters. It certainly didn‘t feel like I was reading over 350 pages...which is why I am marking this off for #bbrc #yeahbaby in that category...though it fits a few others as well! #bookclub #lgbt #scifi

It's been a month, have had so much going on that didn't allow me to be online but Litsy and the Litsy family was never far from my mind. I finished this book while I was away and it was amazing. Thank you for the recommendation. I'd love more recommendations on books of any kinds at this point. So much on my mind and I wanna slip away into some good books.

I really enjoyed reading this book! The beginning is kind of confusing because you have no idea what's going on. However, it gets much better. You follow three characters in the book, and I loved how their stories connected with one another. I was constantly surprised by the twists in the book. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

The fifth season is a really interesting book, and the story itself is so unique (and to me quite unpredictable)! I can't seem to tell what's going to happen, but the book kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. Now I obviously have to start the second book, because there is so much I want to find out!!

My birthday haul! Yesterday was my big 3-0 so we hit up some used bookstores and I lucked out. The Broken Earth trilogy and three Jane Austen works. I haven‘t read Catherine by Austen in like over a decade or something, and I can finally replace the copies of Emma and Mansfield Park I lost. But the biggest score was the like-new Jemisin‘s for six bucks each. Yay!

Thoughts on Book Con:

* I saw so many books I wanted to purchase and it was hard to choose. Here are the ones that I bought. The Hazel Wood is signed.

* All the panels that I attended were great. Ann M Martin is an icon and absolutely lovely. Leigh Bardugo is a goddess.

* ALMOST talked Tor into sending me an ARC of Gideon the Ninth.

* It was lovely to meet so many Littens. You are all beautiful people! Can't wait until next year!

The clumping masses of its buildings are punctuated by great high towers like fingers of stone, hand-wrought lanterns powered by the modern marvel of hydroelectricity, delicately arching bridges woven of glass and #audacity, and architectural structures called balconies that are so simple, yet so breathtakingly foolish, that no one has ever built them before in written history. (But much of history is unwritten. Remember this.)

2. The Orogenes from NK Jemisin's incredible Broken earth series. Their powers to avert natural disasters in a world where they're going to get more frequent could save a lot of lives.
3. Alicia Donadio from Justin Cronin's The Passage- i was heartbroken when she died.

I really enjoyed this! It felt solid sci-fi to me, not fantasy at all, and it suffered some from the standard first book syndrome of setting up a whole world with its own language and culture and themes but overall I enjoyed the interplay of different characters and how they started out as a small part and grew to be important for the plot. I'm interested to see where the next book takes me.
