The Fifth Season
The Fifth Season | N. K. Jemisin
"Intricate and extraordinary." - New York Times on The Fifth Season (A New York Times Notable Book of 2015) The start of a new fantasy trilogy by Hugo, Nebula & World Fantasy Award nominated author N.K. Jemisin. THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS... FOR THE LAST TIME. A season of endings has begun. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy. For more from N. K. Jemisin, check out: The Inheritance Trilogy The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms The Broken Kingdoms The Kingdom of Gods The Inheritance Trilogy (omnibus edition) Shades in Shadow: An Inheritance Triptych (e-only short fiction) The Awakened Kingdom (e-only novella) Dreamblood Duology The Killing Moon The Shadowed Sun

So...this isn't actually a #CoverOfTheWeek this time around...rather it's a #ComicOfTheWeek.

N.K. Jemisin is writing a Green Lantern comic book!

Whaaaaaaaat?

Immediate pre-order for me. I mean...Jemisisn literally won a Hugo for all 3 volumes in her Broken Earth trilogy! How could I not be interested in her take on a Green Lantern character.

The comic isn't in the Litsy database so I couldn't tag it but used one of her novels instead.

⬇️⬇️⬇️

GrilledCheeseSamurai This is going to be a brand new character that Jemisin creates using the Lanterns mythos. It takes place crazy far out in space and while it is still considered 'canon' for the DC universe it is pretty much going to be standalone and Jemisin's own little playground.

I'm so excited to see what she does.

I‘ve been so good about not feeding my comic book addiction, waiting for the collected trades for series like “Monstress,” but here comes DC Comics getting N.K. Jemisin of “Broken Earth” fame to write a series for them called “Far Sector.” #ComicBooks #ICanQuitAnytimeIWant #ShutUpAndTakeMyMoney #Dammit

LibrarianRyan Ojhhhh. That is tempting. 1w
Zoes_Human If she wrote the instructions for opening a box of Kleenex, I would go out of my way to read it. I love graphics, so I'm definitely up for this. 1w
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I've never really gotten into comic books, but I love everything NK Jemison, so I may be starting. 1w

I was struggling with the beginning. I read a lot of good comments in my book group about it, so I just kept going.
It is 1 woman with 3 different names, which is 3 different times in her life. The story skips back and forth with each chapter the same lady, with a different name and at whichever stage of her life she was using a certain name...lol... It's a bit crazy.
I don't feel the need to rush out for book 2.

shanaqui Hi! I haven't read this yet, but I'm told the "one woman with three names" is quite a big spoiler, as it's something the reader needs to figure out for themselves. Personally, I don't care that much about spoilers, but this is a big one, so it might be a good idea to use the spoiler flag? That way people who haven't read it yet can decide if they want to know. :) 1w

I went into this book not knowing what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised. The world building was amazing. The story initially feels like three separate stories, as it follows 3 different women in 3 different times. By the end, their stories converge. I really enjoyed Damaya's story although I felt is wasn't as in depth as the other two. I was really intrigued by the training of the orogenes, and wanted to learn more about that.

I‘ve started this one on paper several times but have always set it down when I needed to read for school. I happened to look for it on audible today while thinking about long-time TBR books that could be my next audio and this was on sale for $6.95. So! Here we finally go 😊

morgan_lionheart This series is great in audio! 2mo

This would be my next pick for a book series brought to life on film.

Jesstifies Question: did you find this book depressing? It‘s been on my list for a while, but the only friend I have who‘s read it described it as a sort of a downer and I‘m trying to decide if I want to dive in 2mo
Zoes_Human @Jesstifies I didn't find it depressing. It's fantasy post-apocalyptic, so there are dark themes and tragic circumstances. The genre demands that by its nature. I can see where someone who grabbed it because it's fantasy, but who doesn't read much apocalyptic stuff, might find it depressing. Does your friend read much in the way of apocalyptic stuff?

You could maybe get it from the library. That way if you hate it, you aren't out any money.
2mo
Jesstifies @Zoes_Human Ok awesome, thanks for the note. I'm not sure my friend is too into post apocalyptic narratives, so yeah maybe he was surprised by it. I JUST got it from my holds at the Seattle library so I might dive right in, thanks! 2mo
Zoes_Human @Jesstifies I hope you enjoy it as much as I. I started it from the library, but I now own two complete copies of the trilogy (physical because I love it and digital in case my house burns down). I've also bought 3 other sets since to gift to others and donate to a prison book drive.

IMO, NK Jemisin is the new Ray Bradbury and the best thing to happen to spec fic in decades.

This book is a very slow start. Too many characters to keep track of, and a whole world to figure out. Add to that a dead child, a missing child, and the end of the world.
I‘m not even 100 pages in and I‘m not sure I‘ll make it.
At least I have today off to read! Happy Labor Day 🇺🇸

Now this is certainly not your typical run-of-the-mill scifi/dystopian story. I loved the unique world - very imaginative and original. It does take a bit of time to get into. Also, I'm not a fan of the second person perspective. But once you get in the groove, it's quite a ride!

I‘d recommend it. What an interesting story and unique voice. I‘ve never read anything like it. It takes a while to understand what‘s going on, but it is such a rewarding read. Fantastic story. Excellent characterization. Essun, Syenite, and Damaya are well-written. Characters you can identify with, love, & really feel for. The story is captivating. I screamed out loud a few times.

This was supposed to be a slow burn for July‘s book club...except I just finished it today! I wasn‘t sure how the pieces of this book fit together at first, appropriate in a way. But it definitely pulled me in with the world and characters. It certainly didn‘t feel like I was reading over 350 pages...which is why I am marking this off for #bbrc #yeahbaby in that category...though it fits a few others as well! #bookclub #lgbt #scifi

I really enjoyed reading this book! The beginning is kind of confusing because you have no idea what's going on. However, it gets much better. You follow three characters in the book, and I loved how their stories connected with one another. I was constantly surprised by the twists in the book. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

My birthday haul! Yesterday was my big 3-0 so we hit up some used bookstores and I lucked out. The Broken Earth trilogy and three Jane Austen works. I haven‘t read Catherine by Austen in like over a decade or something, and I can finally replace the copies of Emma and Mansfield Park I lost. But the biggest score was the like-new Jemisin‘s for six bucks each. Yay!

* All the panels that I attended were great. Ann M Martin is an icon and absolutely lovely. Leigh Bardugo is a goddess.

* ALMOST talked Tor into sending me an ARC of Gideon the Ninth.

* It was lovely to meet so many Littens. You are all beautiful people! Can't wait until next year!

The clumping masses of its buildings are punctuated by great high towers like fingers of stone, hand-wrought lanterns powered by the modern marvel of hydroelectricity, delicately arching bridges woven of glass and #audacity, and architectural structures called balconies that are so simple, yet so breathtakingly foolish, that no one has ever built them before in written history.
