“…most people will still opt for privacy and autonomy over technical efficiency and community interest.”
While obvious, this blew my mind. Is this perhaps why we are so lonely? Privacy and autonomy are optimized in isolation. But that is not where we are humans find most of our happiness and contentment.
“Democracy dies in darkness” also comes to mind when optimizing for privacy and the U.S‘s current political issues.
With a slightly academic tone, Gibson examines 13 witch trials throughout history….spoiler alert, only one of the dozens of mostly women (there are just a couple men highlighted) were never or not self-proclaimed witches. I‘d love to say “see how far we‘ve come,” but as Gibson shows in her last case from the 21st century, accusations have evolved but the underlying causes remain. Politics. Socioeconomic. Nonconformity to religion. Recommended!
A bit dry, yes, but the subject matter is engaging enough to keep one invested. Less about ‘witches‘ and more about the subjugation of women throughout history. I found it scary and sad; just the very idea of what the accused went through. Makes me think about humankind, about being a man in today‘s society, and how I can be better at both.
I have spent a lot of time reading biographies of founding fathers and specific bios of some of the women of the revolution, so I greatly enjoyed this overview that tied many of their stories together.

Not gonna lie, I pushed & skimmed to the end to finish for #SheSaid which makes me sad since the women of the Harvard Observatory were amazing, worked their tails off & have not received all the praise due them. But, by golly this was a slog! There are flashes of greatness & points that made me gasp, tear up or marvel but they were too far in between the data dump of names & dates & things I didn‘t need details on.😖
Just. Wow. Compiled journal entries and stories from the Kansas frontier, from the first settlers in mid 19th century through the civil war and women‘s suffrage. There are heartwarming tales of courage, family, and neighbors helping neighbors, as well as tales of fear and the horrors of life tens of miles away from the nearest neighbor. The isolation broke some women but empowered others. Makes me ever more grateful for modern creature comforts.
This somehow managed to be incredibly interesting and intensely boring at the same time. That's a unique skill set.
