Started this after seeing a discussion video on @shawnmooney ‘s BookTube channel about the author. It explores the complexities and nuances of human struggle for survival, contemplates morality in a world corrupted by colonialism, and asks, “What does it mean to be free?” A book which does not seek to provide easy answers. I took many notes and underlined a lot. Destined to be a top read of the year for me.

Last November, I read La plus secrète mémoire des hommes (Prix Goncourt 2021) by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, inspired by the disappearance of Yambo Ouologuem from literary life after his acclaimed novel “Le devoir de violence“ (Bound to Violence) was found to contain many plagiarised passages (arguably, as part of intertextual plays rather than literary theft) and removed from shelves. It was republished in 2018, and I am now reading it.

This is the diary of Toundi, a so called “houseboy” of Europeans in #Cameroon in the 20th century. He observes and interprets his life and chances and those of the white people. He is humble and kind but it‘s hard to please the whites. A touching book.

This was wonderful. Learning of the customs from a woman's perspective of a #Nigerian village was very enlightening. Efuru may not have been a queen, but because she was clever and kind, she was respected. She knew how to make money and she cared for everyone in her village. This is short, but sweet novella about 75 yo Nigerian woman living in San Francisco. Morayo da Silva is very vibrant character, but after the accident, confronted with ageing and loneliness. Good and still pick, despite the very unsatisfactory ending …
