Pickpick

This is such a sweet and beautifully illustrated memoir. Maia Kobabe takes us through eir journey of understanding eir non binary asexual identity. This book does such a careful and clear job of explaining what gender queer and asexual means to this author. I will definitely be using this book in therapy with my non binary and/or asexual clients.#queerbooks #nonbinarybooks #asexualbooks

It's #AsexualAwarenessWeek until Oct 29, so here's some fun fiction reads that feature asexual characters! Asexual is one of the "A's" in LGBTQIA+. What are some other fiction books that include asexual, aromantic, demisexual, and grey-asexual characters?

Every Heart a Doorway is fantastic! It's a quirky portal fantasy novella where kids are transported to a home to live & they can't get back to reality. ?✨

AlexandraGriffin It's been quite a while since I've read daughter of smoke and bone... but I don't recall any characters being asexual in that book... did I miss/forget something?? 8y
BookishFeminist @GriffinAndHerBooks Liraz is asexual! The first book doesn't explicitly state that she's asexual, but the second book does. 8y
BookmarkTavern Thank you for this. ❤️ I had no idea most of these books existed! This has drastically increased my TBR list. I wish I had known books like this existed in high school. Would have saved me a lot of confusion and grief. 8y

annkuch13 This is awesome! I have a couple of these sitting on my shelves and didn't realize they had asexual characters! And now I need to reread the Daughter of Smoke and Bone books because I hadn't caught that about Liraz before! 8y
BookishFeminist @krysannethemums 💜💜💜 You're welcome! It's awareness week for a reason—this isn't spoken about much & wish society was more validating of ace people & issues. I wish these had existed in high school too. Could you imagine where we'd be if we were all required to take an empathy class focusing on books by/about people who fall outside societal norms?? 8y
BookishFeminist @annkuch13 I hadn't caught that either! It kept coming up when I ran searches for asexual books & it took finding an article about it for me to realize. 😳 I haven't read the rest of the series though where it's apparently explicitly stated, so maybe we weren't supposed to catch it? Either way, I'd love to reread it through this lens now too & unlearn that privilege lol. 8y
annkuch13 Right?! I didn't identify as asexual until last year and it seems like I've overlooked some cool representation that's out there! 8y
AlexandraGriffin @BookishFeminist oooooooh right ok now I remember! I was like.. zuzana isn't, karou isn't... who am I missing?? I need to reread those. 8y
lrh9 Daughter of Smoke & Bone series is one of the best series I have ever read. Right up there with Harry Potter, IMHO. Everyone should read it. I did not think Liraz was asexual, per say, but after reading this post I did some research and now realize she really is on the spectrum. Maybe demi, or gray. Thanks for the other recs! I am excited to read Every Heart a Doorway. 😊 8y
Bookgirl Demi? Grey? Whaaaat? Yay, now I have things to go look up and learn about, thanks all! Also just have to say I so love DOSAB trilogy. 8y
Notafraidofwords Thanks for this. Adding to my TBR. Something I need to learn more about. 8y
Driftglass Ah! This reminds me that I've had Daughter of Smoke and Bone on my TBR since forever ago. I need to get to that one! 📚✨ 8y
Yossarian I think the guy from A Prayer For Owen Meany who wasn't Owen Meany (the narrator) was explicitly asexual. 8y
Avidreader6 I'm in the midst of reading that Mercedes Lackey series and rereading Garth Nix. I love this list so much!! (Especially as someone on the ace spectrum) I think i will be adding all of these to my reading list 8y
WOCreads Really liked the McGuire book, we need more Ace rep!! 8y
JoRead Daughter of Smoke and Bone has been on my TBR for the longest. One more reason to read it. 8y
WOCreads Yess Ace!Rep, also Chameleon Moon has gotten awesome reviews 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @WOCreads ✊🏼 I'll have to check that one out—this is the first I've heard of it! 8y
