Turns out what my summer was really needing is a bisexual, Norse myth retelling of the Little Mermaid. So far, I'm enjoying this, so glad I stumbled upon it!

Gravity's Rainbow | Thomas Pynchon

Happy 80th birthday to Thomas Pynchon!

Gravity's Rainbow is my favorite book. I've read it four times...and through parts of it countless times. This copy (with Kerouac's 'Desolation Angels') has been with me road tripping across 25+ US states.
It's an endlessly creative, weird, and hilarious romp that never stops impressing me.

Borne: A Novel | Jeff VanderMeer

Pickpick

Another terrific VanderMeer novel about the power of learning and discovery, our complicated relationships with one another, and our connection to the natural world.

There's also a giant, flying, bear-thing that destroys anything in it's path. And Borne, a baffling plant/animal whose childlike innocence mutes his potential dangers.

Seriously...how does VanderMeer do this so simply in book after book? Astonishing!

Shadowbahn | Steve Erickson

What Erickson does best, that is, sifts for questions and answers about America through our pop culture, is at peak weirdness. Perhaps frustrating for readers looking for a standard narrative but if you're OK with taking a surreal trip there's a lot to enjoy it.

Couldn't help but think of Scott Walker's fascinating song "Jesse" (2006), which also joined the towers to the Presley twin.

One of his best (my personal fav is Days Between Stations).

Oh look, it's a graphic novel continuation of The Lunar Chronicles but omg - Iko is the main character! Everyone else gets a part to play too but did you hear the part about Iko getting the starring role?!
It's a lot of fun. The only downside is having to wait for the next installment.

398.2 I need to get this! She was one of my favorite characters in the series. 7y

Lincoln in the Bardo | George Saunders

Pickpick

Funny and beautiful story about rediscovering the importance of human connection and remembering the strength of love.

It's told through a bunch of ghosts too lost or scared to continue on from the bardo, who observe Lincoln entering the crypt to hold his dead son.

I don't want to say anything else that might ruin the surprises this powerful little book holds. Astonishing work!

What do you do when you're a detective at the scene of a suicide and you suspect it might be a murder? What if there are no real clues? And an asteroid is going to wipe out the planet in 7 months? Is it worth your dwindling time?

After years of recommendations, I've finally read this. Glad I did. I should have gotten to it sooner. Or maybe it's the existential puzzle I needed right now.

Luckily it's a trilogy because I want more!

Didn't know what to think of this for the first 100 pages.
Then it became good.
Then it became great!
Yeah, with an exclamation point!
The first section is a wonderful tale of friendship, that becomes more harrowing as it reaches it's conclusion.
The second half is one of the most suspenseful and stunning stretches of fiction I've read. These two women came alive on the page and will remain with me for a long time.

Rather fun apocalyptic story that starts to buckle for a bit under the weight of some slow middle parts. The cast is pretty good but the villains are a bit cartoonish. That said, the premise is inventive and filled with genuine surprises.

The humor in the Mermaid story (3 of the 4 chapters) just didn't work for me as much as prior entries, making this entry feel a little flat.

Oh, is this series the cutest, or what?
I enjoyed this one a lot more than the prior entry. It's faster paced and made me laugh a lot more. It's a very satisfying conclusion to the series, easily earning a score of four out of five teacups!

And now I can go back and finish the last couple of books in the Parasol Protectorate series.

Crass, violent, #cyberpunk action romp with a bisexual heroine? Sign me up!

Well...after a terrific opening, the next 100 pages or so moved by at a snail's pace. But just as I was about to declare "meh!", the momentum built and rarely let up. It has all the appeal of stumbling upon a grimy, sci-fi B movie at 2 AM.

I'd place it between 'so-so' (that early slog!) and 'pick' if there were such a rating. Definitely not for everyone.

I was sold on page one. I mean, look at that opening!

The writing holds up to that strong start during it's 600+ page run. With our dead protagonist slowly decaying across decades of history in interconnected vignettes. It's in turn kinda gross, funny, sad, and hilariously gross.

It's tough to see this as a complete review because it's half a book. After volume one I'm very eager to experience the second half of Finch's tale.

Transgender main character, author, and cover model...not exactly sure why it's taken me so long to get around to this one. I think maybe I just don't want it to be bad. Nervousness about hot button topics overtaking the character story/drama and all that. Not due to unfamiliarity but my close proximity to the topic.

At 100 pages in, I'm relieved to be finding it quite good. 😊📚✨

Tired of the same old Apocalypse stories? Well, how about a Bloodpocalypse? Blood seeping from the ground, bones tripping people as they slosh through ankle deep blood?
Glad I read this at Halloween because it becomes a pretty savage horror story that doesn't pull punches.
I liked the characters and was rooting for Lea and her brand new girlfriend. Their relationship is cute, despite the disgusting situation.

The Ruins | Scott Smith
post image

Heres my #AllHallowsRead pick that deserves to be more widely known.

Desite rave reviews, Scott Smith's 'The Ruins' seemed to have vanished shortly after it was released.
Smith's storytelling genius is in what happens to ordinary people when faced with harrowing situations. In this case, vacationers who confront a horrific presense at an archeological dig.

There was a terrible movie version that fumbled the suspense at every turn.

Clive Barker's #DarkFantasy about a society that could create magic, who wove themselves into a rug to hide away from the evil beings hunting them. Of course, all manner of power hungry people and creatures would love to get that rug!

Fantastic start to a series!
One of Lauren Oliver's strengths is in taking a character from "ugh, another annoying everygirl" and making me feel her frustrations. Gemma's family with secrets and Lyra's life locked in a research facility are a perfect Oliver playground.
I'd planned to read Gemma's story then Lyra's but after four chapters I decided to alternate in 3-4 chapter chunks, enhancing the way the stories entwine.
Second book plz!

Another book for #AllHallowsRead that's on my TBR pile. Even though it seems a departure from Telgemeir's other works, with it's fatastical premise, I'm betting it'll have all the slice of life drama her graphic novels are known for.
Not exactly how the #DayoftheDead figures into the story but it's not hard to imagine.

The first horror book I remember reading is 'Salem's Lot. I was about 10 or 11 and swiped my mom's paperback from her bookcase. It had this cover image, with the metallic vampire face.
