Every Heart a Doorway
Every Heart a Doorway | Seanan McGuire
Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children No Solicitations No Visitors No Quests Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost. PRAISE FOR EVERY HEART A DOORWAY "Seanan McGuire has long been one of the smartest writers around, and with this novella we can easily see that her heart is as big as her brain. We know this story isn't true, but it is truth." Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series (TV's True Blood) "Seanan McGuire once again demonstrates her intimate knowledge of the human heart in a powerful fable of loss, yearning and damaged children." Paul Cornell, author of London Falling and Witches of Lychford

A new favourite, this book felt like a hug. I was hooked from start to finish and genuinely didn‘t guess who the killer was! Such a good book, and the series continues to be enjoyable.

I‘m obnoxiously picky about the kind of Fantasy I enjoy…but I‘m finding myself in a particular ~mood.~ So, I‘m seeking recommendations! Help me out if you love a challenge!

Some series that‘ve hit the right spot recently-ish are featured. I‘m not big on High Fantasy battles, politics, or character names. Adult fiction preferred (though younger protagonists are okay, and even encouraged!).

shortsarahrose I love a challenge! I‘m going to tag two books, both that I would describe as more about the vibe/atmosphere than plot/character and both novella length. 3mo
brittanyreads In a similar vein to Red Sister....you may enjoy this series.. 3mo
See All 20 Comments
shortsarahrose Also, both tagged are the start to series 3mo
monalyisha @shortsarahrose Oh, I‘m good with lots of character-development…I just don‘t like when the characters have High Fantasy-style names. 😅 3mo
brittanyreads And I've not read this yet, but this sounds reminiscent of the Wayward Children's series.. 3mo
monalyisha @shortsarahrose A Psalm for the Wild-Built was one of my favorite books of the last few years, so you‘re spot-on about my taste, in general! I think I want something *slightly* darker & edgier at the moment, though. Normally, hope is my JAM. Don‘t know what that says about my current state of mind but…😵‍💫🤷‍♀️ 3mo
shortsarahrose Got it! The Gunslinger is definitely darker if you want to go down that route. It does have some solid character development, too, getting into the backstory of the MC Roland. I just emphasize the vibe with it because that‘s the thing that seems to make it or break it for others who‘ve read it. 3mo
monalyisha @shortsarahrose I‘ve actually had The Gunslinger recommended to me a few times over the years! I tried a couple of other Fantasy/Westerns that I liked, so it was a natural segue. I tried it on audio and it didn‘t do it for me (I bailed)…but it absolutely could‘ve just been a case of narration! 3mo
monalyisha @brittanyreads The Lost Story might have potential! Thanks! 3mo
shortsarahrose I started it on audio, but switched to ebook for it, so for me it made a difference. I haven‘t read the next book in the series yet, either, but it‘s on my TBR. 3mo
Zuhkeeyah For a more involved fantasy, I highly recommend N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy 3mo
monalyisha Thanks, @Zuhkeeyah! Both have been on my radar. Maybe I should bump the Jemisin back up. I remember considering bringing it home once. I read the first few pages and decided against it. But I know the series is well-loved and the synopsis appeals! I‘ll take a peek again when I‘m at work tomorrow. 3mo
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs Yes! Not for a long time — and I‘ve thought about rereading it because of his new one. But I loved it! I think it was probably 2008? 2009? 3mo
CoffeeK8 I‘m going to second Broken Earth and also recommend 2 more. I love a good fantasy (but most of mine are romances). I‘ll suggest Clockwork Boys by Kingfisher & Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews (urban fantasy) 3mo
TheKidUpstairs I figured you probably had. Are you a Gaiman fan? Either Ocean at the End of the Lane, or Neverwhere might fit what you're looking for? 3mo
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs Ocean at the End of the Lane is another long-time favorite! Neverwhere I couldn‘t get into. 🙈 3mo

This was surprisingly fun and surprisingly grisly. First in a series but works as a standalone. Has both trans and ace rep. And a mad scientist apprentice who is skilled at body disposal and making hot chocolate. Great book for when you want to read a whole story in one go.

Taking a break from my Big Books to find out if this much shorter book is a "one sitting" kind of read. Somehow it is due back to the library in two or three days. How did almost three weeks pass already? What even is time? Almost half the year gone! How?! Where did it go?

SM is an amazing writer and an even more amazing person. The “about the author“ page she wrote about herself at the end of this book makes me adore her. This story was twisted and wicked and creepy – so it was awesome! The characters were unique and lovable. Great fantasy / horror book.

Characters weren't really likable or interesting. I might have had a bit too high expectations.

This was too confusing to be likable. I hated how long it took to understand what was happening. Yes, this had a hint of magic but...

This is the first book in the Wayward Children series. I've read book 8 without realizing it was a series and loved it. Book 1 was a little different. It was a little gruesome and darker than I expected. I didn't like it as much as book 8 but it was entertaining. 3.5 ⭐️

I am personally of the opinion that if a kid wants to read, let them read what they want.

… But I do also think that every kid should have the opportunity to read the Wayward Children series. If only because I think everyone should read them. ❤️

Bk4 of May is done. I started to read the 7th in this series & realised I couldn‘t remember the previous books! Stupid Covid brain fog. So I‘m rereading all of them, thank god they‘re novellas! This was just as wonderful as the first time I read it in 2016. A unique take on the portal fantasy, it‘s about the children who return & are cut adrift from both worlds. Eleanor West‘s school is their haven, until the bodies are found. #BookspinBingo 👇

A sort of Alice Through the Looking Glass theme but if there were multiple Alices who ended up in different worlds, each suited to that particular child's needs and capabilities. The book follows students at a boarding school who long to return to the worlds they stumbled into. After Nancy arrives from an Underworld students at the school are murdered one by one. I enjoyed the theme of acceptance but the book fell just shy of expectations 3.5⭐️

This story explores what happens when children return from their fantasy worlds - it does have some violence/gore - for me the themes of acceptance, love, friendship, coping with loss, stood out the most. 🎧 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Eleanor West‘s Home for Wayward Children. A place for children who've been returned from the magical places they've disappeared to in the past; labeled wayward (mostly by their parents). Nancy arrives at EWHWC and she makes several new friends who understand what she's going through. Home is no longer her home; she wants to find the door back to her place. Will she be able to do so as a series of murders occur or will she be next?

Ohh no. Unpopular opinion.
So disappointed in this.
This needed to be at least twice as long, at least 3times as deep, and someone take the diversity checklist away from this author. Not organic at all. I was so excited about the concept and an asexual main character but nothing about this worked for me. Especially the 1 latin character who goes to the Día de Muertos land, how stereotypical (did Rowling give notes on this? It was that subtle).

For us, the places we went were home. We didn‘t care if they were good or evil or neutral or what. We cared about the fact that for the first time, we didn‘t have to pretend to be something we weren‘t. We just got to be. That made all the difference in the world.

I didn't realize how much I needed a new book series in my life & I‘m delighted to have found one. The entire concept of mysterious doorways that sporadically appear to other worlds is fun, interesting, & full of possibilities. As an intro to the book's world, it allowed the explanations to unfold to its protagonist, so it was enough but not overwhelming with too much detail. (I did dock .5 star for being a bit TOO rushed at times tho)
