Every Heart a Doorway
Every Heart a Doorway | Seanan McGuire
Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children No Solicitations No Visitors No Quests Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost. PRAISE FOR EVERY HEART A DOORWAY "Seanan McGuire has long been one of the smartest writers around, and with this novella we can easily see that her heart is as big as her brain. We know this story isn't true, but it is truth." Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series (TV's True Blood) "Seanan McGuire once again demonstrates her intimate knowledge of the human heart in a powerful fable of loss, yearning and damaged children." Paul Cornell, author of London Falling and Witches of Lychford

Ohh no. Unpopular opinion.
So disappointed in this.
This needed to be at least twice as long, at least 3times as deep, and someone take the diversity checklist away from this author. Not organic at all. I was so excited about the concept and an asexual main character but nothing about this worked for me. Especially the 1 latin character who goes to the Día de Muertos land, how stereotypical (did Rowling give notes on this? It was that subtle).

For us, the places we went were home. We didn‘t care if they were good or evil or neutral or what. We cared about the fact that for the first time, we didn‘t have to pretend to be something we weren‘t. We just got to be. That made all the difference in the world.

I didn't realize how much I needed a new book series in my life & I‘m delighted to have found one. The entire concept of mysterious doorways that sporadically appear to other worlds is fun, interesting, & full of possibilities. As an intro to the book's world, it allowed the explanations to unfold to its protagonist, so it was enough but not overwhelming with too much detail. (I did dock .5 star for being a bit TOO rushed at times tho)

This was a re-read, as I read it in college, but #newyearwhodis was a very good excuse to finally get my hands on my own copy!! (Why is this book so hard to find, as a sidenote?) It‘s just as great a read as I remember, and I hope to keep reading these!

monalyisha The newest book in the series is hard to find, too, & it just came out! Or, not hard to find, exactly, but no local bookstores are carrying it & the scant few library copies in my systems (both the one I work in & the one where I live) are checked-out. I wanted to read it for my upcoming vacation, so I ended up ordering a copy from Amazon & having it sent to my Mom‘s condo. 🙈 Anyway, I love them. 💞 Glad you enjoyed your reread! 2w

Weird but good! A group of kids who have all gone through portals to different worlds have ended up at a boarding school after being thrown back into the “real” world to help them adjust, but they all want to go back to the worlds where they felt they belonged. When a serial killer shows up, they must figure out who it is & stop fellow students from dying.

4⭐️. What a weird and wonderful little book. Although I had no clue what was happening for the first third of the book, I was able to relate to the main character in being thrown into a world where nothing makes sense anymore. Can‘t wait to find out more about these boys and girls and what happened when they went through the doors.

I adored this novella about kids who went through doors/portals to other worlds - some nonsensical, some very logical, but all ones where they felt like they belonged. For a variety of reasons, they had to come back to this one and were sent to a boarding school for special children. It‘s fantasy and mystery and just a lot of fun, even if it was a bit predictable. I‘m definitely going to read the next one (and not just because I own it 😉).

I loved this novella and can't wait to read the rest of the series! The school for wayward children houses those who have travelled through portals to other worlds and are now stuck in the 'real' world and can't adjust to their old life. The writing captures the whimsical and the melancholy, the grief of not belonging and the hope that one day you will find your door home again. It was poignant, mysterious, and a little creepy. I enjoyed it a lot

I accidentally read book 4 before book 1 (tagged) of this series. The author jumps about, so not much was spoiled. The series is about secret doorways leading to different worlds; worlds that do not make sense even to other portal travelers. But each world fits the individual traveler perfectly. Thankfully I didn‘t let the YA tag stop me from giving the series a chance. If you like the H. Potter series I recommend this. It is more mature than H.P.

I have been hearing so many good things about this series that I finally listed to the first book on Scribd. They are very short but definitely worth it. Some kids find these doors that lead them to these different worlds and some find their way back to the real world, many wanting to go back. 👇

Magical worlds & children. Something like Alice in Wonderland meets Miss Peregrine's. Dark & twisted. TOTALLY up my alley. I loved nearly everything about this. A good diverse set of characters & a really fun atmosphere (hello creepy boarding school feel). A lot of world-building in a very short book & fast pacing that made whole read feel something like a whirlwind. I am hooked. I want more of this world, more of these characters. Just MORE.

Every Heart a Doorway is brilliant, beautiful, and my favorite of the series (I think). The characters are some of my favorite in any fantasy (YA or otherwise). They're written so exceptionally well. Each character feels important to the story, and when there's under 200 pages, that's an impressive feat!

What happens to children after they return from their trip through a portal into a magical land? Can life ever return to normal? Do they want it to? Nancy has been sent to a special boarding school by her parents who believe that she is delusional. But the school is not quite what it seems, and when a body turns up, everyone's life may be in peril. Clever and magical, this novella speaks to the longings within us all.

🎧 tough review because I was bounced out of the story every 90 seconds! I‘d like to know how many times my name “Nancy” was said in this short 4 hour story. I estimate a thousand. 😝 Otherwise it‘s a fabulously creative book. I‘d like to buy the treeware. There‘s swearing and some may feel adult situations. I loved it. Good character development. I feel like I'm in the minority here, but this just isn't grabbing me despite the very cool concept. I listened to one of her other books as Mira Grant, the one about bloggers covering zombies (actual title??) and felt similarly underwhelmed, although I persevered with that one til the end. But I'm not gonna make the same mistake here! I'm glad to have something widely available with ace representation though. #QueerBooks #AceBooks

Lindy I‘m sort of with you. Not a fan of her style but I‘ve only bailed on one in this series so far. Everyone else in my YA book club loves her stuff, so I keep reading, despite continuity errors that really bug me. 1y

One of my favorite charities was doing a special sale day for their birthday recently, so I picked up an autographed copy of Every Heart a Doorway! I listened to this entire series on audio and loved them, so I‘m excited to add this to my shelves. 😊📚❤️
