'You're a tick boxes kinda guy,' his wife used to say. And according to one of his annual performance reviews, 'a pedestrian determination' was the 'hallmark' of his 'approach to policing'.

Admin were thinking of bringing in self-assessment; if they did that, Muecke was tempted to write, 'Still standing.'

This book was amazing. I didn‘t want to put it down. One of the best depictions of the experience of homelessness I‘ve ever read. Raw, honest and extremely clever. I loved the artwork that is included, I loved the storyline, the characters and the way the book flowed almost literally along with the Brisbane River. I loved Boy Swallows Universe but wasn‘t so enthralled with his next book. This one will keep me reading his books from now on.

Almost a bail. Disappointing. Too long. Too much conversation and descriptions. Read like he was writing it for a TV series. I skimmed a lot of it just to get it finished.

I was in the mood for some Garner, having been lucky enough to see her speak followed by Tim Winton speaking about her at a conference to honour her and her work a couple of months ago.
This 1992 novel is one of only a few of her books left for me to read. It‘s really three separate but interlinked stories.
As always her writing is exquisite. Although she is an Australian national treasure, she is only now being read more globally. #ozfiction

CarolynM It‘s great to see her getting international recognition, but it‘s a bit strange too. She‘s been such a feature of the local literary scene all my adult life, but suddenly I‘m seeing people writing/speaking about her as though she‘s new! 2mo
MrsMalaprop Absolutely @CarolynM. My mum introduced me to her and The First Stone was one of my book club‘s first books in 1997. Way to get a discussion going 😬🤣. 2mo

Last Thursday I couldn‘t get to work as the trains were down. It‘s never happened in my 20 years at my current job. I made it a treat myself day. First stop was the local Little Free Library. I also visited St Paul‘s Thrift Shop Stockton and Starter Stories, the yummy sourdough bakery there where I spent $60 on treats! My tummy was sore the next day after dieting for so long for my showgirl performance. It was a shame it was windy and rainy.

I don‘t know how I feel about this book. I wanted to like it but parts of it just left me cold. I had to force myself to finish it - it did catch my attention at times but mostly I was wishing it would end already.
Maybe I was distracted by the view?

rubyslippersreads Are you wearing ruby slippers? 😄👠🌪️ 4mo
Jhullie @rubyslippersreads 🤣 I wore lots of red on the cruise, easier for accessories and shoes. 👠 4mo
