“I will break the cycle…I will trust the children. The child within me and the children I will one day nurture. I will trust in their resilience, their wisdom, their limitless imagination, and their innate capacity for love. I will guide them, but I will also learn from them and will allow their innocence and wonder heal the wounded parts of my soul. Together we will create a new story.”
I have no words. I am so proud of Shari.

Suet624 I‘m listening to this right now! 5d
FashionableObserver @Suet624 You‘ll have to let me know what you think. I seriously want to punch both parents. That poor girl…those poor kids. It‘s a miracle Shari is here to tell this story. Talk about strength! 4d

I thought that, since I‘d watched the documentaries and read the articles, this book wouldn‘t be able to shock me. I am about halfway through it right now. I. Am. Horrified. That woman was a mess long before Jody came into her world. Always cold. Always calculating. Always manipulative.
Those poor children. (And eff that husband, too. Coward).

😳, I unfortunately think we‘re at the start of kids telling their stories of living in a household that broadcast to YouTube of other online media sources. There are so many ethical dilemmas that go along with these situations (some of which Franke discusses in her book). The passing of the 2018 Free Range Parenting law in Utah has made it close to impossible for DSS to investigate cases of child abuse since the law is so vague. I can‘t imagine

ncsufoxes the countless kids that will be missed (although even without laws like this many kids fall through the cracks). I need to watch the show on Hulu about the family & this case now. (I don‘t follow influencers or families like this on YT, I don‘t really want to watch people exploiting their kids when the kids don‘t have a say in any of it). 1mo
AmyG Free Range Parenting? Or when I grew up….parenting. This was a crazy, sad story. (edited) 1mo
ncsufoxes @AmyG, the law was designed to give kids more freedom but it‘s probably had a more negative impact. Franke called DSS multiple times over 4 years & each time they couldn‘t press charges. It wasn‘t until they saw actual physical signs of abuse that they could press charges. Meanwhile these kids were psychologically abused for years (which has adverse health implications in the long term). 1mo
AmyG Yes, I listened to the book. My heart broke for her and her siblings. I can only hope they got the help they needed and can go on to fulfilling lives. 1mo

I commend Shari for sharing her story and working toward changing laws in order to protect children like her family. A tragic story.

Lesliereadsalot I have this on hold at my library. So glad you liked it! 2mo

Has anyone read this?I'm so torn.On one hand, the empathetic side of me sees a teenage girl who finally escaped abuse and was teetering on the edge of suicide, barely surviving. On the other hand, her multiple calls to child protective services indicates that she knew her younger siblings were being abused, too. To what extent did she know is arguable as the abuse did escalate, but at minimum she knew there was gross neglect and physical abuse ⬇️

Jennaree3 So the question becomes: why didn't you BREAK THE DOOR DOWN? How did so many people around this family fail those kids? The police failed them. Their brother, sisters, even their own father just let a locked door stand between them and those children. All because mommy dearest, the sickest of all, SAID SO? Crazy. Infuriating. Excellent book, though. Wish it was fiction. May all of those children find peace 🥺😢 2mo
TheBookHippie Happens every day to so many kids. The system has been broken all 36 years that I‘ve helped at risk kids. Police are a joke. Victims can hardly survive, let alone help anyone else. Lots of complicit people in this world. So very sad. 2mo
