Comprised of three books (“My Childhood,” “In The World,” and “My Universities”) by the famed Soviet writer Maxim Gorky. It‘s touted as one of Russian literature‘s best autobiographies, which I agree with. Gorky (a pseudonym meaning “bitter”), who grew up in ghastly poverty, is a fantastic observer of Russian peasant life and its hard-bitten cruelties alongside its simultaneous spiritual raptures, all under the last half-century of tsarism.

This memoir offers a look behind the scenes of one of the most private First Ladies in recent history. Melania has a quiet strength and protective nature. The book could have benefited from better editing. I wonder if this was due to challenges in finding an editor she trusted. (She notes how she was let down by people she relied on, leading her to take more control over her responsibilities.) An interesting, if imperfect, memoir. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 ❤️📚

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks My MIL is reading this now and said the same thing… 4d
Elizabeth2 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks the writing could have been better, which isn‘t a reflection of Melania per se. She‘s not an author. Definitely needed a better editor. But she noted in the book that it was sometimes difficult to find people willing to work with her because of her husband. It was also very hard for her to find people she could trust, quite understandably. She was burned more than once. 4d

What a delightful #memoir from this classy, elegant & inspiring actress from Hollywood‘s Golden Age! Sophia, now 90, survived severe poverty growing up in wartime Italy & stood up to movie moguls who wanted to change her look. Not a tell-all, just sweet stories about her films, deep friendships with her leading men & her devotion to family. Loved learning she was once a lead character in an Italian magazine‘s sultry live pictorial novelization.

TheBookHippie This looks good! I love a memoir!! 5d
MemoirsForMe @TheBookHippie Nothing beats a memoir by a Hollywood icon! 5d

My favourite quote from Ken Done comes from the introduction and reads “I love it that people have a $20 poster in their bathroom.” because my Mum is the OG Ken Done fan in the family AND we had a framed Ken Done poster in the bathroom!

Great coffee table book.

What a wonderful time. ☺️ While the 'choose your own adventure' format is somewhat modified for the audiobook, I love how it was done, and I would not want to pass up the chance to listen to Neil Patrick Harris narrating the majority of the book. The little missives from friends and acquaintances peppered throughout are in a different narrators voice, but they're almost more hilarious for being read in a deadpan 'straight-man' style 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? by a generic sounding old British guy voice. In keeping with a man who's gone from Doogie to Harold and Kumar to Dr. Horrible, there are moments of broad and even raunchy humour, but the overall tone is one of sincerity and gratitude. Harris obviously enjoys the work he does, from television and film to award show hosting and Broadway, finding it engaging and challenging and fulfilling, 3w
Robotswithpersonality 3/? but it's clear how much his happiness is due to the family he's made with the love of his life, David, and their kids. It's honestly just lovely to hear from someone who manages a life in show business without meteoric rises and pitfalls, which is not to say the book doesn't acknowledge the work projects that didn't go well, the journey to coming out publicly as gay. 3w
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 Maybe wholesome is in unwanted, saccharine attribute, but it comes pretty close to the overall vibe. If you need a boost, and enjoy bursting into laughter at the bus stop, I highly recommend. 3w

Quite good account of his life and work in publishing. Kind of like having an old friend remembering. Stories about authors and family, etc

Her writing flows over you like water, and she led such an interesting life. I‘d like to dive into the next installment, but I still have three physical library books I need to finish soon. One of them is from another series that‘s also nearing the end, so I‘ll keep pausing the García Saenz for now. #serieslove2025

Andrew65 Excellent 👏👏👏 Always tricky to fit in library books. 3w
