Charlie has just written his GCSEs when he meets Fran and gets blackmailed into taking part in a production of Romeo and Juliet. Over one summer, as his parents‘ marriage falls apart, his father sinks into a dark well of depression and Charlie‘s life spins out of control, he and Fran fall in love. Twenty years later, he revisits that summer in this glorious, funny and heartbreaking novel. Highly recommended. #covid19readathon

Old fashioned ghost story that capitalizes on the tropes, but lacks scares. I found it all rather ridiculous. #covid19readathon

Super fun mystery featuring a cast of high school seniors who might be stereotypes if they weren't so well-written. Nate & Bronwyn 4eva. #covid19readathon

Blind Kiss: A Novel | Renee Carlino

Panpan

The premise of this book was great...what if you blind kissed someone and they turned out to be the love of your life. The execution, however, was just....cringe-y. The main characters were not even remotely believable and their relationship was just, well, yuck. #covid19readathon

timeisfleeting I read this one too, and had much the same reaction. 4y
TheLudicReader Good to know I am not alone, @timeisfleeting Not really sure why I read the whole thing. I knew by about page 20 that it wasn‘t going to be good. 🤨 4y
timeisfleeting I just stuck with it hoping it would turn out better. : / 4y

The Raising: A Novel | Laura Kasischke

Mehso-so

I was intrigued in the beginning, but then it seemed to go on and on without really going anywhere. Small liberal arts college. Dead girl who seems to be haunting the people who knew her including the boyfriend responsible for her death. At the end of the day, it didn‘t add up to much and it was long. #covid19readathon

Fall for Anything | Courtney Summers

Pickpick

Courtney Summers is a Canadian YA writer who pulls no punches. Her characters are flawed, tough and vulnerable in equal measure, and wholly believable. In this novel, Eddie is trying to cope with the suicide of her once famous father. When she thinks he's left her clues about the reasons he killed himself, it cracks her grief wide open. Another excellent book by this author. #covid19readathon

Although this debut about a woman who is clearly nuts and will stop at nothing to reunite with the guy who dumped her is 100% ridiculous, I had no trouble reading it. Not one bit of the story was even remotely plausible, but I kept going. #covid19readathon

I saw the movie based on this book about the bond between a cat and a former heroin addict a few weeks ago. I am a cat lover, & the movie was 100% awesome. Of course I was going to read the book. Bob the cat was hit by a car and died just a few days ago. 😢 #covid19readathon

Catherine_Willoughby I thought he died of old age . Oh no 😔 5y
TheLudicReader Hmm. I read an article that said car accident...but maybe that was not the truth. He was only 13 though. So sad whatever the cause, @Catherine_Willoughby 5y

Child 44 | Tom Rob Smith

This book is actually my #bookspin #doublespin. (I loaned my book spin selection to my aunt. Duh.) Child 44 has been on my tbr shelf forEVER. I have mixed feelings about this one. It‘s a thriller set in Stalin‘s Russia. Lots of Russian names & backstory. When it was thrilling, it truly was. It was also frustrating & dragged in some spots. Apparently it‘s book one of a series, although I likely will not carry on. #covid19readathon

You know how some books have a very specific audience in mind? This is one of them, and I don‘t think that audience is me. Nevertheless, this book did shoot me back to my university experience, and it was rewarding to watch the protagonist settle into her own skin. #covid19readathon
