Suspension of disbelief evaporated pretty early in this book. I could not buy the premise that a woman would willingly up and leave with a stranger to start a new job, leaving her identity, cell phone and wallet behind. I kept reading because it's a haunted house story and there are some creepy elements. However, the characters were not well fleshed out either. The resolution is also awkward with plot contortions that I just couldn't accept.

Awesome read..so much happening behind the scenes..a second read is a must

Eerie and tense, with a classic horror-trope of an unreliable narrator, whose unreliability becomes more and more questionable, particularly in the end.

Old fashioned ghost story that capitalizes on the tropes, but lacks scares. I found it all rather ridiculous. #covid19readathon

It‘s difficult to settle on a rating for this one. I‘m giving it three stars, although I‘d consider most of my experience with the story to be a four star read. My upset over the ending has affected my view but I also want to be fair to the work, as a whole. I am sure I‘ll read more by Wendy Webb in the future. I do love ghost stories and all of her books look appealing.

I flew through this in a day. She would leave each chapter with just enough to keep me going. I knew Julia wasn‘t a true stranger to these people but I couldn‘t wait to see how she was going to tie this all up. And then that ending! It‘s like she gave me just enough to satisfy me but also not enough that it‘s lingering with me still. We‘re entering book hangover territory, people. I keep thinking about this damn house, these people, this story...

This was a creepy read. I loved it. I think it is the best of her books. Big old house, ghosts, demons, seances, and secrets

A spooky story of family and homecoming. Julia doesn't know where to turn for help when a stranger shows up with a chance at a new life. She ends up at a remote mansion filled with shadowy questions where she is the answer. The perfect book to ride out a snowstorm.

For Halloween I decided to try 2 spooky books. The vanishing and the haunting of Ashburn house by Darcy Coates. Both were spooky good fun!!

This was a fun roller coaster of a mystery. A quick read and a lot of unique characters. Definitely worthy of a few hours of your time.

Starting my summer of Mystery.

Julia goes to Havenwood to be the assistant to Amaris, a horror novelist. When she arrives at the estate, she begins to suspect that there are sinister things going on.

The world believes Amaris is dead and as Julia befriends the novelist, she learns more about her own family tree. Havenwood‘s past includes murder and spirits who still linger the halls. A descendant of the mansions owner and Julia work together to solve the mansion's mysteries.
