The Vanishing
The Vanishing | Wendy Webb
Recently widowed and rendered penniless by her Ponzi-scheming husband, Julia Bishop is eager to start anew. So when a stranger appears on her doorstep with a job offer, she finds herself accepting the mysterious yet unique position: caretaker to his mother, Amaris Sinclair, the famous and rather eccentric horror novelist whom Julia has always admired . . . and who the world believes is dead. When she arrives at the Sinclairs' enormous estate on Lake Superior, Julia begins to suspect that there may be sinister undercurrents to her "too-good-to-be-true" position. As Julia delves into the reasons of why Amaris chose to abandon her successful writing career and withdraw from the public eye, her search leads to unsettling connections to her own family tree, making her wonder why she really was invited to Havenwood in the first place, and what monstrous secrets are still held prisoner within its walls.

It was a beautiful night for a campfire. I took advantage of the clear, crisp night by having a glass of Fireball and Dr. Pepper and a good ebook.

Suspension of disbelief evaporated pretty early in this book. I could not buy the premise that a woman would willingly up and leave with a stranger to start a new job, leaving her identity, cell phone and wallet behind. I kept reading because it's a haunted house story and there are some creepy elements. However, the characters were not well fleshed out either. The resolution is also awkward with plot contortions that I just couldn't accept.

Eerie and tense, with a classic horror-trope of an unreliable narrator, whose unreliability becomes more and more questionable, particularly in the end.

Old fashioned ghost story that capitalizes on the tropes, but lacks scares. I found it all rather ridiculous. #covid19readathon

It‘s difficult to settle on a rating for this one. I‘m giving it three stars, although I‘d consider most of my experience with the story to be a four star read. My upset over the ending has affected my view but I also want to be fair to the work, as a whole. I am sure I‘ll read more by Wendy Webb in the future. I do love ghost stories and all of her books look appealing.

I flew through this in a day. She would leave each chapter with just enough to keep me going. I knew Julia wasn‘t a true stranger to these people but I couldn‘t wait to see how she was going to tie this all up. And then that ending! It‘s like she gave me just enough to satisfy me but also not enough that it‘s lingering with me still. We‘re entering book hangover territory, people. I keep thinking about this damn house, these people, this story...

This was a creepy read. I loved it. I think it is the best of her books. Big old house, ghosts, demons, seances, and secrets

A spooky story of family and homecoming. Julia doesn't know where to turn for help when a stranger shows up with a chance at a new life. She ends up at a remote mansion filled with shadowy questions where she is the answer. The perfect book to ride out a snowstorm.

For Halloween I decided to try 2 spooky books. The vanishing and the haunting of Ashburn house by Darcy Coates. Both were spooky good fun!!

📚 Tagged - it has that gothic-house-as-a-character feeling, but is set modern day.

Answers to #LitsyQuestions even though I need to go to bed! (1) A weekend away w my husband! (2) I read during all seasons 😍 (3) Mostly modern-day but I do appreciate a good historical fiction story once in a while - or those books that flip flop between history/memories and current-day. (4) Very little. I work at a library 😁 (5) Minnesota! (6) TWO TODDLERS (7) maybe 10. Again, I work at a library 😁so the books I own are ones I've read & love!

GypsyKat Great answers! And I always get sucked into things like this right before bed, too. That's great that you work in a library! 😊 7y

I've been saving this book for my next Fall trip "up north" to Lake Superior! That's happening this weekend! Wendy Webb's books are hauntingly beautiful tales with a superior sense of place.

Linsy @raelaschoenherr I'll make sure to post one when I finish! I'm hoping I'll like it as much as I did The Fate of Mercy Alban, another of her creepy house books. 8y

LDavisMunro This sounds so interesting! I haven't read much in this genre but really want to, so I am adding it to my stack. Might be a good one for October!! 8y
Linsy @raelaschoenherr @LDavisMunro It took me a while to get into the plot, but once I did I found it fun. Exactly what I needed. However, I would recommend a different book by Wendy Webb, The Fate of Mercy Alban, if you're looking for something like this. It is gothic and includes an awesome house, like this one, but pulled me in more. I couldn't put it down over Christmas. 8y
LDavisMunro @ABookishPixie thanks for the recommendation! I will add that one to be TBR pile too!! 8y
raelaschoenherr Thanks for the great rec! I've seen her books around but never picked one up. 8y
