This book takes its time, thus taking me a little time to get into it. But it definitely gripped me, moving back and forth between mother and son as we get to know each and their situations. It explores identity, belonging, immigration, and the dreadful way the US chooses to treat undocumented people. #ReadYourEbooks

I ended up with a fun mix for #ReadYourEbooks for August. The Leavers is the one I most want to get to.

3.8/5 🌟

This poignant novel examines the life of a boy whose world is shattered when his mother disappears, leaving him to be adopted by a white family and navigate a new identity. As he grapples with the trauma of his past and struggles to find his place in the world, the story offers a heartbreaking exploration of loss, identity, belonging, and much more.

The subject of this book was interesting and I liked reading about family, adoption, belonging and immigration. I thought it was a little long, would be great on audio!

The great February book haul: I‘m always on the lookout for books for #litsyatoz. And these are literally #letter A to #letterZ

Balibee146 Zuleikha is part of my dog's pedigree name.... I sometimes call her by it if she's being naughty and she gives me The Look when she hears it 🤣 8mo
Texreader @Balibee146 Such an unusual name! I wouldn‘t have guessed it. How cute!! 8mo

An enjoyable short read. I was expecting a little more in regards to the structure of the Soviet Union‘s meteorological network and the work they did. It was less about that and more focused on the life in prison and brutality the meteorologist, Alexey Feodosievich, had to endure as a review on the horrors of the Great Terror. Paragraphs often hop in time which confused at times, but an overall good read for those interested.

Ooh, this one was a heartbreaker and beautifully written. So many challenging themes, adoption, belonging, loss, and social justice. Great on #audio, highly recommend! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

I feel like I read this before, but maybe it‘s just true to life of families in SoAz as in SoCal. In any event, this is certainly a book that can encourage empathy in young readers who may not be familiar with the stories of people living on the border. I appreciate the care each character is given. Deserving of the awards it received.

Almost 170p in and I‘m giving up. My expectations where high after reading a review which said it was for lovers of “The Eight Life” and I loved that after the first paragraph and knew I was reading a new favorite novel by the first page.

This book almost pulled me in at page 100, but then it lost me again. I just don‘t have it in me to force read 300p pages by Monday when it‘s due back at the library.

Maybe I‘ll get back to it someday.

KristiAhlers I‘ve been having that experience with a lot of books lately. So trusting. And yes, life is too short to read something that doesn‘t connect for you. 3y
TheAromaofBooks That's a shame!! But sometimes a book just isn't a good match!! 3y

I had higher hopes for this book, as I was very interested in the interracial adoption storyline, but I felt the story really dragged. It took me ages to read. At least it fulfilled some prompts! The parts I did love was the exploration of adoption trauma, and an example of how inhumane our immigration system is (saying more would border in spoiler territory).

Cinfhen I liked it when I read it but recently @BarbaraBB read it and she had VERY similar thoughts like yours 3y
BarbaraBB That‘s right @Cinfhen I felt it dragging along too unfortunately 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
marleed Oh I read this one a few months back. It was a slow pick for me. I erred on the side of a pic because the storyline was an immigration experience I had not considered - and I really like to learn from immigration stories. But the book itself did drag. 3y
