The Great Believers | Rebecca Makkai
post image

Moving depiction of a group of young gay men in 1980s Chicago as they cope with the AIDS epidemic, homophobia, and their own diagnoses. Going back and forth in time between the mid-1980s and 2015, it focuses on the stories of Yale and of Fiona (a sister of the one of the men and a friend and caregiver to many of them). Yale‘s story was particularly compelling and heartbreaking. #familybookclub

Bookzombie I already have this stacked, but great review! 🙂 2w

So so confusing at the beginning, middle and then I loved the end. I think a major part of my problem is I tried to read this at the beach during family vacation with lots going on. It's not something that I was able to easily jump back into after a break. Would have been better for me if I had several uninterrupted hours to devote to Evelyn. But overall, it was so inventive and for that it's a total pick. #audiobook #familybookclub

Cathythoughts Great that you enjoyed it ! Anything with numbers freaks me out 😳.. still , it does sound good 👍🏻 4mo

A bit slow in places but overcome by the powerful portrait of the relationship between the parents and children in a religious Muslim family. Questions of how much responsibility parents have for who their children become. The father‘s evolution brought me to tears. I also learned a lot about the practice of Islam. Looking forward to discussing this at family bookclub. #muslimmc #familybookclub

ChasingOm I love that you have a family bookclub! 6mo
ReadingOverSleeping Family book club is awesome!! Stealing, if they cooperate 😁😂 6mo
Reggie The part where the dad tells the grandson what to say on the phone....😭😭😭 6mo
Blaire @Reggie yes! And that conversation with him at the wedding. First book that‘s made me cry in a while. 6mo
Blaire @ChasingOm @readingoversleeping I highly recommend it. Mine is my mom, grandma, sister, and me. We do the discussion by video chat. It‘s nice to get the inter generational perspective and gives us more to talk about than family news. 6mo

I really enjoyed this light hearted Jane Austen. As usual, Jane Austen developed great characters - some I loved and some I hated. The secondary title should be “Misunderstandings” because there are so many that pull the plot in different directions. This book was a lot of fun! #familybookclub

Kalalalatja Great review! 2y

Double Indemnity | James M. Cain

Our January #familybookclub choice is a short thriller written in 1935. This book is packed with more action, twists, and murders than most modern day thrillers that are 200 pages longer! This author is a genius. I was hooked from the very beginning and never guessed most of the surprises Cain had in store. This would be perfect for readathon as the audiobook is only 3 1/2 hours long. #booked2018 #unconventionalromance

IamIamIam I didn't know this was a book! I love the film!!! 2y
