Pickpick

For me, this is perfect YA fantasy genre reading (except for the sex scenes, they weren‘t YA!) - just enough world building, just enough descriptive writing, good sense of setting, a strong forward momentum and characters that had a bit of complexity. Just enjoyable and escapist which is what I was looking for.
If you haven‘t read it this could be a great Halloween pick - a very earthy witch and wizards and castles feel 😍

Centique PS not to be a prude about the sex scenes because I‘m here for romance #forsure but darn, cos I was planning to buy this for my 14yo. Better luck next time! 6y
Centique PPS background is a tree in the Auckland Domain. I love these trees so much - great place for a picnic! 6y
xicanti I used to hang around that very tree when I lived in Auckland! 6y

Otherworld_Library There has been an odd confusion with both this and Spinning Silver. Both are adult fantasy and shelves as such at of all my local bookstores, but for some reason Goodreads labeled it as YA in its 2017 Best Books awards. (edited) 6y
Centique @Otherworld_Library that‘s a good point, it does make it confusing. I think I often get a YA vibe when it‘s first person narration, and a young protagonist - but that‘s just me and not conclusive at all! This proves it 😊 6y
Centique @xicanti oh my goodness, how cool! I didn‘t know you used to live here! Where do you live now? 6y
xicanti @Centique I was there for a year on a working holiday visa! Now I'm back in the middle of Canada, which is nowhere near as nice. I miss Auckland every day. 6y
batsy I loved this! I think she does characterisation so well. 6y
Centique @xicanti awww! I‘m glad you liked it. Meanwhile I think Canada is awesome 😊 I‘ve been to Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara ontheLake (and to Saskatoon funnily enough!) only a tiny amount of your HUGE country but they were all wonderful. 6y
Centique @batsy yes! Awesome to see such a great female friendship portrayed too. 6y
elkeOriginal @Otherworld_Library @Centique This is not YA - just look at the hardcover price! That puts it firmly in the adult fantasy section. But I agree without the few racy bits, it totally could have been YA. I LOVE her book Spinning Silver. That one might be suitable for your 14 yo - try it yourself! You won‘t regret it. 6y
elkeOriginal Your Auckland tree is dreamy 💕 6y
Centique @elkeo_TheBookDragon I‘m looking forward to that one! I might try and talk my teen into reading this one anyway and just jumping a page at the bedroom scenes - she‘s super icked out by it! 😂 But it‘s SOOO good. 6y
lillypadreads @Centique I know what you mean my teenager is the same! 6y
Centique @lillypadreads you have to laugh! 😂 6y

#TBRtemptation! Found this thick essay collection in the sociology section of my bookstore. Just came out this month! She attempts to bridge the humanities with the hard sciences, writing essays on a wide variety of topics: art & literature through biases; feminism; the mind/body dichotomy; desire; imagination; neurological disorders; suicide; hysteria Sounds like an interesting viewpoint on various important topics! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
