The Glass Bead Game | Hermann Hesse, Magister Ludi
post image

I went to the library to pick up a hold and was seduced by the "blind date with a book" display. I almost don't want to open it, the anticipation is so sweet! Any guesses about what it is before the big reveal? The clues: It's satire, "dark, unsettling, and nerve chafing," and about 1/2 inch/1 cm thick.

Lindy That could describe a lot of books I like. Hope you enjoy whatever it is. 🤞 1w

ImperfectCJ @Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @Lindy @Meshell1313 Turns out it was this one. I read it in 2009 just before my son was born. I liked it then, but it might be interesting to see how it reads almost 16 years later. 1w
Lindy @ImperfectCJ The blind date idea is fun. We did that sometimes at the public library before I retired. 😁 1w
ImperfectCJ @Lindy To my knowledge, this is the first time our branch has done it. I am amused at how much of a draw it was for me. I'm such a sucker for those kinds of controlled surprises, like getting a mystery grab bag or a tea advent calendar. 😂 1w
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Oo i saw the movie in my brad pitt phase ❤️ 1w
Meshell1313 @ImperfectCJ oooh interesting!!! 1w
ImperfectCJ @Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I think the movie is so well done. I actually preferred it to the book, but now that we're planning to watch it with our teens, I want to read the book again, so it showing up as my "blind date" is fortuitous. 1w

#AboutABook #SetInFuture @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

It always freaks me out when famous books written in “the future” are actually set in our past, so I find it comforting that this is actually still some 200 years away. Also I love this book.

Eggs I read several Hesse books as a 20 year old and loved them 6mo
IndoorDame @Eggs his books have always come to me at just the perfect time in my life and been really meaningful. I actually have one waiting for me right now, so I‘m hoping that streak continues. 6mo
Eggs @IndoorDame I Hope so too! Books find US🧡 6mo

Narziss and goldmund | Hermann Hesse

Hermann Hesse seems to have had a thing about tramps: Knulp is another vagabond though I'm not sure he got as much sex as Goldmund. And you could argue that Siddhartha is a parallel story.

Pickpick

I always find poetry in translation difficult. When a poem doesn‘t work for me, is it the poet or the translator at work? I found most of these good, but none of them great.

First book of 2024 done.

Itchyfeetreader This is such a tough one and gets to the heart of how tough it is to translate. Not just words or grammar but feeling and purpose and a ton do other things besides 14mo

Farmers‘ market today, which meant that the Friends of the Library had their book sale! Time for a little #bookhaul
One of the volunteers said that Hesse is her favorite author. I‘ve never read anything by him, but I take that as high praise!

Jari-chan I love Hesse and am rereading his Steppenwolf ❤️ 2y

Starting this one.

I've been using dice to roll for what books to read next to get through books I've had for so long but haven‘t gotten to. Really is helping me get rid of the tbr 🤣🤣

But anyway, I hadn't planned on being able to finish this but I'm home from work sick. So.

Hazel2019 Cool cover 😊 2y
CoveredInRust @Hazel2019 That bird is me right before I sneeze. 🤣🤣 but yes, it's so pretty 💜 2y

Hesse is one of those authors I‘ve been lucky to read at just the right moments and so several of his works, including this one, have had a great impact on me. #GamesPuzzlesDay #NovemberNarrative @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

JamieArc I‘ve only read one of his books-Narcissus and Goldmund, but it was the absolute perfect book to be reading at the time. 2y
IndoorDame @JamieArc I just love it when that happens! 2y

A collection of shorts. I enjoyed the first the most - Augustus. A little bit of sci fi here, and being Hesse his hope & struggle with humanity is evident although not so misanthropic.
