I got sucked into watching Hoarders last night, and caught an episode about a couple who had hoarded 200,000+ books in their house. The books were stacked so tall and and deep in the house that they only had very narrow paths to walk through. When they did the cleanup, they were only able to clear one area of the living room in two days of work!

Next time my bf complains about my books, I will have to show him this episode! #extremebookwormprobs

Booksnchill How awful is it that I want to go to their clear out sale??? 5y
Velvetfur To be honest I think that's what we all dream of, in a way, isn't it...?! 😅 5y

I might have been a very naughty bookworm this holiday. Two more days to go (including a trip to Barter Books in Alnwick on the way back to the ferry) and I‘ve already bought 22 books (not counting the ~10+ I got for the kid). I even found three Folios for 25 Pounds today. 😍 #foliofreaks #bookwormproblems

ephemeralwaltz Loooove it!!! 6y

scripturient @Sarah83 Tennyson‘s Poems, Hardy‘s Tess of the d‘Urbervilles and Hardy‘s The Mayor of Casterbridge. 😊 6y

Look what I found while spring cleaning! I decided to keep the ones published before 2000. Sorting it took a lot of time because I obviously started reading them. 🙄😁 #nostalgia #hoarder

the_alternate_ending_library “It‘s really elitist to say there‘s a right way to enjoy books,” she says. “They are my books. I paid for them.”
Despite today‘s custom of shelving books with the spine out, there‘s no correct way to store a book, says Henry Petroski, a professor at Duke University who wrote a book on the subject.
6y
the_alternate_ending_library “There are always many ways to do just about everything.”
For centuries, books were stored every which way, except the way they are now, according to Mr. Petroski‘s “The Book on the Bookshelf.” Before the 16th century, spines had no printed titles and were considered the least presentable part of a book.
6y
the_alternate_ending_library Early librarians often knew the location of books without relying on titles (or modern aids like computers). Sometimes the exposed pages, known as the fore edge, had text or embellishments, including extravagantly painted scenes from the book. 6y

the_alternate_ending_library Proof of this can be found in early Renaissance depictions of scholars such as St. Jerome, who arranged his books haphazardly or with the pages facing out. It was also true in some medieval libraries, such as the Chained Library at the Hereford Cathedral in England. 6y
the_alternate_ending_library The books at Hereford are shelved with the fore edges out to avoid tangling chains attached to the book—an effective, if ancient, security system. The TV series “Game of Thrones” mimics the custom at the library at the Citadel.
Our home library has both.... ✌🏼

I collect things. Always have. Some of my collections have been: ceramic fairies, teddy bears, teacups, disney plush toys, wool and when I was young I was in a kids magazine with my soap (yes soap!) Collection. How's that for random?

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I collected unicorns and stickers when I was a teenager 😊 7y
laurieluna @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks unicorns sounds like an awesome collection! 🙌 (I am gutted there isn't a unicorn emoji!) 7y
