August 11 is the deadline for Hugo Awards voting and I trying to finish as many of the nominees as I can. I've finished all 6 novels, 4 of the novellas, and one or more books from each of the nominated series.
#hugoawards #hugo2020

For the #JubilantJuly #readathon, my goal is to read some of the shorter works (novelettes, short stories, graphic novels) and a few of the YA nominees. Thanks @Andrew65 for hosting!

Andrew65 Best of luck 👍 2y

The #JubilantJuly readathon was a success, as I got through much of the Hugo Awards reading I wanted to do before this week's voting deadline. I finished my last 2 novels, my last novella and a bunch of short stories. #hugoawards #hugo2020

I also continued with my Aurora Awards (Canadian sci-fi/fantasy) reading with Best Novel nominee Jade War.

Thanks to @Andrew65 for hosting the readathon!

Andrew65 That‘s great 👏👏👏🙌🙌🥳🍾🥂 Thanks for playing along. 4y

Loved this story of necromancers belonging in different houses competing for the ultimate prize. It was funny and horrific and it weirdly had an “And Then There Were None“ vibe.

I've now finished all 6 of the Hugo Best Novel nominees in time for voting! It's been a successful #JubilantJuly readathon so far.

kwmg40 In case anyone is curious, this is my ranking of the Hugo Best Novel nominees:
The City in the Middle of the Night
Gideon the Ninth
The Light Brigade
The Ten Thousand Doors of January
A Memory Called Empire
Middlegame
I enjoyed then all, though, even the ones at the bottom of my list.

I finished another Hugo Best Novel nominee for the #JubilantJuly readathon! This space opera has terrific characters and some very interesting concepts, though I found the pacing very uneven. The main character is rather like Dax of Star Trek DS9.

I'm continuing to work through my Hugo Voter Packet during the #JubilantJuly readathon. I took a break from the Best Novel nominees to read through the Best Story shortlist. My favourite of these is “Do Not Look Back, My Lion“ by Alix Harrow, a warrior-culture fantasy story with unexpected twists on traditional gender roles.

This Hugo Best Novella nominee about 4 astronauts on a scientific mission describes really well what it means to be a scientist and the story celebrates discovery and exploration. I love that the title comes from a message from Earth to extraterrestrials sent on the Voyager missions. #hugo2020 #hugoawards

Tamra This sounds like a good read and it‘s not even in my wheelhouse! 4y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 Love a good science fiction book. 4y
kwmg40 @Tamra I've read Becky Chamber's other novels, and I think they would be enjoyed by many readers, not just science-fiction fans.

@Andrew65 Me too. It's also nice to read near-future science-fiction that's not in a dystopian or post-apocalyptic world, as so much of it tends to be!

Exhalation: Stories | Ted Chiang

I just finished Hugo Best Novelette and Best Novella nominees, “Omphalos“ and “Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom“ from this collection. These, like all other Ted Chiang stories I've read, are creative, though-provoking and simply brilliant. #hugoawards #hugo2020.

I'm at 10 hours and 20 minutes for the #24B4Monday readathon so far.
@Andrew65 @jb72 @SumisBooks

rwmg Did you see Omphalos won the Best Novelette Locus and Exhalation won the Best Collection Locus this year? 4y
kwmg40 @rwmg Yes, I saw the list of Locus winners just now and was pleased to see that! 4y

This nominee for the Hugo Best Novel award is an engaging and charming story, with a really wonderful cast of characters. Coincidentally, the audiobook version of the story, about a girl named January, was narrated by January LaVoy. #hugo2020 #hugoawards

I've managed 7 hours and 15 minutes so far for the #24B4Monday reathon. Hope to squeeze in a bit more reading before bedtime!
