I‘ve mentioned a couple of times that I read all of Bourdain‘s books last year. His still photographer is doing a sale of these fairly reasonably priced prints ($120 US shipping included), and I ended up buying 3 (at his writing desk) and 4 (the iconic middle finger). After all that time with him last year, it‘ll be nice to have him near my bookshelves! Sale ends tomorrow.

First finished book of 2025! There seemed to be some missed potential in not connecting the individual vignettes but otherwise it‘s a nice cozy book! Apparently GoodReads has a list of cozy translated novels….and I‘ve read several. This genre is my jam! Thanks, Rachel, for sharing this book with me! I really enjoyed it! #LitsyLove

3.5/4⭐️ (between very good and excellent)

I love the premise of this book and I flew through it, however I suspect I would have enjoyed it even more if I knew more about Japanese cuisine. The food descriptions meant nothing to me. The human stories resonated though.

Plot and Engagement: 4 (excellent) Character and Atmosphere: 3 (very good)

Actually, originally from Walt Whitman. Oh, how I love this movie! It came out when I was a freshman in high school, so I felt like I went through school with them. We actually performed it in concert choir, too. #memories

A Japanese translated fabulist tale of a hole in the wall diner that doubles as a detective agency: seeking out that formative meal from your past that you long to recreate.

An absolutely charming tale, with a loving father and daughter relationship, and food in every chapter that made my mouth water!

“But even though I was ashamed, I knew that my mother's story was true. It was the story of my family, the story of my people. And it was a story of survival.“

This book could be used at any age to help children understand that differences in cultures and tradition can be completely different, but are unique and should be celebrated. In a young elementary classroom, I could see this book being read aloud and then having children write and share some traditions that their family has.

Award winning- A young Chinese American girl is embarrassed when her parents stop to gather watercress from a ditch. She doesn't understand why they can't just buy food like other families.
