I'm glad to see Dorothea grew up and stopped acting so stoic and self righteous.
Thanks for the readalong #middlemarchinapril gals 🌹

kspenmoll Just love this book! Only read it a year ago. 6y
readordierachel It was such a journey. I really grew to love Dorothea by the end. 😊 6y

I did it. It took forever. It was worth it.
The cast is vast, and I cared about some plot lines more than others, but it's a pretty impressive feat to have a novel of this length in which nothing seems superfluous. This book is a 10,000 piece jigsaw and each scene is a necessary piece. I grew to love many of the inhabitants of Middlemarch, and I know I will read this again. It's a book that begs to be revisited. #middlemarchinapril

Reviewsbylola I bought this a few months ago and I‘m still unsure of how I‘m going to tackle it. 6y
readordierachel @Reviewsbylola I ended up doing a mix of print and audio to keep momentum going. The Juliet Stevenson narration is masterful and really brings the characters to life. It's available on hoopla if you use that. And if I could do it again, I would probably just focus on this instead of trying to juggle it with other books. It's great, and I hope you enjoy it when you get to it! 6y
BridgetteM I‘m struggling through this one now. Determined to finish! 6y

readordierachel @BridgetteM You can do it! How far are you? 6y
BridgetteM @ReadOrDieRachel I‘m about 65% through. Thanks for the encouragement! 6y
readordierachel @BridgetteM If it helps, I thought the last quarter or so was the best 🙂 Good luck! 6y
JamieArc Glad to see this review. This is one of the books I‘m most scared to attempt! 6y
readordierachel @JamieArc It's definitely an undertaking, but I think it's worth it! 6y
batsy Yay! Lovely review 😊 6y
saresmoore Great review! I got stuck somewhere in the middle when they were discussing medicine as politics or something, then lost my place because my library ebook expired. Your review encourages me to carry on! 6y
readordierachel @saresmoore I hear you. There are definitely some weedy bits in there, and the scope is so large that the thread was hard to see sometimes. But it all comes together really satisfyingly (imo) at the end. Look forward to your thoughts! 6y
LeahBergen Wonderful review. 👏🏻👏🏻 6y
kspenmoll I read this last year for the first time & loved it! 6y

I read 13 books during May and I continued with Middlemarch #middlemarchinapril & A Game of Thrones #GoTCaD. I really enjoyed all the books I read. Strange the Dreamer and A Court of Thorns & Roses were my two favorites. Caraval and The Shining were close behind. Also Sick House was one of the most disturbed haunted house stories that I've read in awhile 😸

GatheringBooks wow! that is a lot of reading! nice! 6y

This book took a while to really grow on me, but it did and I grew to love the characters. Dorthea became a true heroine in the end. I will miss the people of Middlemarch!

#MiddlemarchinApril

readordierachel You did it! Glad you liked it. I'm hoping to finish next week. 6y
Rachbb3 @ReadOrDieRachel I did! The ending was so good I felt like it flew by. 6y

I figured with moving next week and a Disneyland trip I will not finish all of my reading goals for June, so I'm going to do half and half and knock this book out. 😁

I plowed through and finished the book because I figured out that at a chapter a day, we won't be done until nearly the end of June, and in addition to starting another buddy read, I have too many other books going 😁. I have mixed emotions about this book, but I will wait until the buddy read is over to share them. #middlemarchinapril

Rachbb3 Good job! I need to do the same, but we're in the middle of a move and I'm afraid I'm going to get behind in all my reading goals for June. 😩 6y

I fell way behind on #middlemarchinapril and made a lot of progress today but am not quite caught up. The lady you see pictured above is Unity Dandridge Garth, a cousin of Martha Washington. Her picture popped up when I googled “Mary Garth,” and I thought she looked remarkably like the character in my mind. Spoiler comments about the book below 👇🏻

readinginthedark Okay, I accidentally erased everything I was trying to type here, so I‘m just going to hit the highlights. How do you all feel about Mary‘s refusal to burn the will? I can understand her not wanting to take the gold or be accused of anything, but it‘s not like anyone would know, and Featherstone wasn‘t asking her to decide which will to keep. Ladislaw‘s habit of stretching out on other people‘s rugs cracks me up. 7y
readinginthedark Lydgate‘s medical business and the politics of Middlemarch are getting a little crazy. I wonder if Dorothea, who‘s been a bit separate until now, will be drawn into it all? And what‘s with Celia‘s obsession with her baby? I mean, I remember being enamored with mine, but not to the point where I would have tried to convince someone not to grieve. She should let her sister get through the loss of her chosen life, if not the loss of love. 7y
LitLogophile I recently read Middlemarch and had the same anxieties! I wish Mary would‘ve burned that damn will haha. She would‘ve been doing only what the testator requested but just didn‘t want to get mixed up. And Celia always struck me as out of touch with her sister and too concerned with appearances 💆🏻‍♀️ 7y
readinginthedark @LitLogophile Yeah, it‘s a little crazy. I actually liked Celia better at the beginning, and I wonder if she thought Dorothea was more miserable than she actually was? I mean, her marriage was sad, but not abusive. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y

Chapter 48 was a good one! Who is caught up and wants to talk about it? Mark spoilers in the comments...

staci.reads Is it bad that when Casaubon asks Dorthea to make the pledge to obey his wishes, I kept thinking "maybe he'll die before she says "yes"?? What an ass! Trying to control her every move even after he dies! And now, I know she'll feel so guilty she'll abide whatever his final wishes were ? 7y
bookandcat @staci.reads I say GOOD RIDDANCE to him! 😡 7y
BookwormAHN I'm in the process of catching up. I'll let you know what I think then. 7y
readordierachel I'm close, but not there yet. I'm on chapter 45. 7y
readinginthedark I fell behind! 🙈But I‘ll try to catch up soon and check back! 7y
staci.reads @bookandcat Agreed! He just became more and more unlikable as the book went on. I thought maybe he would improve as Dorthea did, but nope. Couldn't stand him. 7y
staci.reads I have a feeling his final wish will have something to do with keeping Dorthea and his money away from Landislaw. 7y
staci.reads @BookwormAHN @ReadOrDieRachel @readinginthedark No problem! Come back and comment when you get there! I look forward to hearing what you all think! 7y
BookwormAHN Wow, did Casaubon really want a wife or a secretary? What a jerk! 7y
Rachbb3 I agree Casaubon became more unlikable, I had a feeling he was going to make ridiculous demands of Dorthea. He's going to dictate from beyond the grave. 7y
bedandabook I got so caught up in it, I have ploughed on and finished the book last night! What a read. I won‘t comment for fear of spoiling something for you, but the book just gets better and better. Enjoy! 7y
staci.reads @BookwormAHN He was so pretentious he couldn't see any worth in her short of how she reflected on him. I am curious now to find out how she will react to his death. Will she make a martyr of herself or wake up? 7y
staci.reads @Rachbb3 I have read a couple more chapters, and I'm actually liking him even less after he is dead 😡 7y
staci.reads @bedandabook Good to hear! I'm really enjoying it, so I don't know that I'll be able to stick to a chapter a day either 😊 7y
BookwormAHN I typically read a few chapters at a time, especially when things heat up. 7y
readinginthedark I wonder though...if he felt comfortable in the belief that she would follow any direction he left her, would he have removed the codicil to his will and just told her what he wanted? Or would he have gotten even more involved and forbidden her from even giving Ladislaw money (which he basically did anyway)? He seemed to feel more loving of her at the end but still mistrustful. I‘m not fond of him, but I‘m reading Othello right now, so he seems... (edited) 7y
readinginthedark ...tame by comparison. 😆 I think he might‘ve been able to mellow out a little and been kinder to Dorothea if there hadn‘t been the disagreement about Ladislaw in their honeymoon. I am curious to see what Dorothea will do now, though, with her money, patronage, and friendships. (edited) 7y
staci.reads @readinginthedark ok, maybe Casaubon isn't to the level of Othello 😊, but who knows? Maybe he had the potential to go there if he had had an Iago whispering in his ear. He was already suspicious without encouragement 🤔 7y
staci.reads @readinginthedark I am enjoying the next few chapters, watching Dorthea gain confidence. 7y
readinginthedark Touché! ? 7y
