Middlemarch (Revised)
Middlemarch (Revised) | George Eliot
George Eliot'sVictorian masterpiece: a magnificent portrait of a provincial town and its inhabitants George Eliot s novel, "Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life," explores a fictional nineteenth-century Midlands town in the midst of modern changes. The proposed Reform Bill promises political change; the building of railroads alters both the physical and cultural landscape; new scientific approaches to medicine incite public division; and scandal lurks behind respectability. The quiet drama of ordinary lives and flawed choices are played out in the complexly portrayed central characters of the novel the idealistic Dorothea Brooke; the ambitious Dr. Lydgate; the spendthrift Fred Vincy; and the steadfast Mary Garth. The appearance of two outsiders further disrupts the town s equilibrium Will Ladislaw, the spirited nephew of Dorothea s husband, the Rev. Edward Casaubon, and the sinister John Raffles, who threatens to expose the hidden past of one of the town s elite."Middlemarch"displays George Eliot s clear-eyed yet humane understanding of characters caught up in the mysterious unfolding of self-knowledge.This Penguin Classics edition uses the second edition of 1874 and features an introduction and notes by Eliot-biographer Rosemary Ashton. In her introduction, Ashton discusses themes of social change in"Middlemarch," and examines the novel as an imaginative embodiment of Eliot's humanist beliefs. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators."

Book #71: I rather enjoyed Middlemarch. It started off slow, but as the book went on it picked up its pace rather well. Although the book was the longest I have yet read on this list, about 900 pages, the plot was simple enough that it was easy to follow throughout the entire book. Middlemarch is a town in England where the book follows the lives...

Since I am not a quick reader, it feels extra sweet to finish a long classic. Even better the second time around. My poor copy is destined for the trash bin after our #wellreadmom #bookclub meeting because it is in about 10 pieces by this point. ❤️

I did it! I got through the entire book! I think this was my third try and I resorted to listening to the audiobook on 1.25 speed... Yeah, it was a lot of drama and pearl clutching, so if you like that sort of weepy distress then this is the book for you! 😁 Now if I could just get through Swann's Way!

#QuotsyApr19 Day 30: #mistake in prophecies as gratuitous. I have yet to read a George Eliot novel. I think I own a copy of this book lying somewhere, gathering dust. 🤓🤣😭😂🧚🏼‍♀️💕📚

Leniverse Middlemarch is an amazing novel. But it is quite an investment of time and attention. The prose is really dense. I read it one or two chapters per day, with my morning coffee, over two months. When it was finished I was sad and wanted more. 7mo
gradcat @Leniverse I think you put it very well . . . in fact, all of her books are dense and require a great commitment. You know, I‘m just thinking . . . if you want more have you read (edited) 7mo
Leniverse @gradcat I have, yes. And Silas Marner. After Middlemarch I resolved to read one of her books per year until I‘ve read them all and then read Middlemarch again! Although I might do two this year, since it‘s the 200 anniversary of her birth. I have her Essay collection, and I‘m thinking maybe Adam Bede. 7mo

We are finally back from holiday and regular posting habits can recommence. (I know it‘s a mobile app, but I just don‘t get around to it. I need my space. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

So, Christmas #BookHaul part 1/3. These are mine. Very happy to get beautiful cloth bound editions of two of my favourite books. 😍 Also happy to receive two award winning books by Norwegian authors. I haven‘t been able to keep up with Norwegian lit at all since I moved to the UK.

10mo
