(2016) After 200 years of peace, the space navy has become more of a social club than a fighting force. So when ex-Sergeant Roger Rogers finds himself forced to reenlist he expects hours of unprofitable time-wasting. His old ship is more chaotic than ever, but when an actual crisis looms, he may have to take his job seriously. The comedy is a little broad for my taste--too many body-function jokes--but the satire of bureaucracy is frequently sharp

I not only enjoy reading Warhammer 40K, I also watch and sometimes play it (virtual). When Spotify noticed a pattern, it thought I might enjoy Grimdark Tavern who makes music inspired by Warhammer 40K. And yeah, I do. Quite a lot.

“Cadia stands“ even managed to steal Nemo's crown as my Nr. 1 song. Even though Cadia falls (not a spoiler), the song lets me feel empowered during this time. Cadia stands as a human planet alone against the Warp ⬇

Jari-chan protecting the rest of the universe. They're only humans, standing against Gods, monsters and darkness. Feels familiar.

Did I get carried away? Yes, indeed I did.
Cadia stands! An always shall!

I liked it, it builds on the backstory of the game and gives you a bit more detail as to what happened before

John Perry joins the army when he turns 75. His desire to move on from the memories of his wife result in him joining the long, bloody fight to expand & protect humanity‘s place in space.

I can see why people like this. John is fun, the humor is on point, & the world building is amazing. But 300 pages of stop/go action, w/ everything going down in the last 50 pages + a last minute romance makes this more of a miss for me.🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

I had high hopes for this one. Honestly I find this author's books to be misses in the series. So much potential to finally get the scoop on the emperor but he almost seems like a secondary character in this book. Also not a fan of this author's writing style.

Giving this a go after playing some Space Marine 2. Really want to dig into some Warhammer 40k lore. Enjoying it so far.

I read this book for my Summer Reading Challenge. I chose it for the Locus Winner: First Novel.
Despite being confused for the first several chapters, I did enjoy this book. I always struggle to wrap my brain around sci-fi novels. I enjoyed the story and the main characters. It gave me Cyberpunk 2077 vibes. That helped me understand more of what was happening. It was nice when things finally clicked.
I am looking forward to reading the sequel.
