Today I was, both physically and figuratively, in the Navajo Nation (reservation) and at Four Corners Monument. 🧡

I enjoy reading Tony Hillerman‘s novels because I have a deep appreciation for the Indigenous Peoples and their culture. Hunting Badger takes place mostly in the southern canyons of Utah. The robbery of a casino has retired Lieutenant Leaphorn involved with Navajo Police Officer Jim Chee along with the FBI searching for the thieves. The search turns deadly before the manhunt comes to an end. 4/5⭐️
Overall, I loved Race to the Sun. The characters were vibrant and fun. I loved learning about the Twin Heroes and the Trials. It was an amazing journey, and I was disappointed when it ended with a proper wrap-up. There were lots of unanswered questions. However, I still gave it 5 stars because I loved it so much. (I am catching up on January books)

This novel is set in the four corners region and on the Navajo Nation. The main characters are Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee. Navajo Police Officer Delbert Nez is killed. While searching for the murderer, lots of corruption is discovered. Leaphorn & Chee won‘t stop until they solve the crime. The Navajo lifestyle is always present and explained to those who desire knowledge of life of Indigenous peoples. 4/5
Continuing my 2024 reads since I'm kicking myself for not reading this one sooner!!
It's a fun read, great world building, character dialogue was witty and felt grounded within the characters, and not knowing much of the Diné culture and history, Roanhorse explored and provided that information throughout the book that propelled the story and characters in a way that didn't feel dry or stalling to the story.

Sorry to say I have not read this book. I did see the movie but I have no doubt that it doesn't compare to the book.
“By the end of the war, more than 400 Navajos had served as code talkers. They had been told in school that their language was no good, but they had proven that wasn't true. The Navajo code helped win World War II.“
