My pick for March is Trail of Lightning #12booksog2023 @Andrew65 This is the first time I have read this author.
132/150 This straddled the line between a low pick and so-so, but the conclusion was exciting enough to push it into a pick. I'm not really fond of stories with heavy religious overtones, so that took away some of my enjoyment of the scientific aspects of the story. The Christian preacher and evangelist seemed more caricatures than real characters.

Debut novel and a definite pick. The MC is Rita Todacheene, a young forensic photographer in Albuquerque. Rita is talented and through her lens captures details that help solve cases. Since childhood she has seen spirits, most are harmless, but some insist she help them. A particularly gruesome death and unhappy spirit keep Rita from sleep and drive her headlong into danger. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of five.
HF-based on the story of how the US government ( the Long-Knives) forced the sheep herding Navajos from their land, Canyon de Chelly, by burning their homes and their crops. Told from the POV of a young girl named Bright Morning.

"The southwest wind picked up turbulence around the San Francisco Peaks, howled across the emptiness of the Moenkopi plateau, and made a thousand strange sounds in windows of the old Hopi villages at Shongopovi and Second Mesa."

My #Booked2023 #SunshineNoir book: I was tempted to try a really dense South American one, but went for this relatively light southwestern US murder mystery instead. Well written, with engaging characters and insights into Indigenous cultures that are different from those in this part of Turtle Island, with a Navajo detective at the centre and traditional beliefs and practices playing a role in the unfolding of the story: part of a longer series.
