This is heavy and academic. Considering how dependent on online *everything* I‘ve been this year, it also freaked me out thoroughly. It‘s 700 pages, or 24 hours of audio. Or you can watch The Social Dilemma on Netflix, hear her speak, and get the basic message in two hours. Still, I‘m glad I read it even though it‘s scary and made me mad.

Oh my, this book broke my heart. And it made me mad! The story of U.S. immigration policy under Trump is one that must be told, no matter how cruel the story is. Soboroff makes the complex details clear, and deals well with the emotional aspects too. The story isn‘t over, so I also recommend following him on Twitter for updates.

It‘s a stretch but I‘m using it for #abouthousing in the #nonfictionchallenge2020 .

It‘s amazing to me that just hours after the shooting occurred, MSD students began talking about rising up and fighting back. Not against their assailant, but against a culture that normalizes active shooter drills and worse, school shootings. Cullen covers their uprising, emotions, realities, and inspiring journey. Excellent on audio too!

I loved this memoir / call to action about the Flint, MI water crisis. This pediatrician sounded the alarm and used science to back up her patient concerns. I also loved her stories about the Iraqi / Chaldean immigrant community. She balanced work, activism, marriage, family, and kids. It‘s inspiring and could happen in any of our towns.

After a few weeks of mystery / thrillers and some lighter nonfiction, I think I can actually concentrate on the heavier fare again. Oh, and the second of the Obama Biden tongue-in-cheek capers from Andrew Shaffer. Wonder where he‘ll go with this series now ... if at all? (As an aside, Shaffer keeps commenting on my tweets ... which influenced my choice here too. 😎)

I‘m giving my recent mystery / thriller series a rest (at least on audio), since this library book came in. Using this for my #nonfictionchallenge2020 #aboutinfrastucture pick since it centers on the Flint, MI water crisis.

If you‘re looking for the detailed story behind voter suppression this is a good place to start. She also talks about which voters political campaigns focus on and why. And what the census means to individuals, communities, and the entire U.S. Yes, there are lots of problems. But Abrams‘ proposed solutions are sound—and inspiring.

Forman divides his book into two sections—origins and consequences. As you can imagine, the first is history of legal and police policy from Reconstruction until recently. The second is the impact those earlier decisions, like the war on drugs, have had on communities of color. Very illuminating.
