Rafe: A Buff Male Nanny | Rebekah Weatherspoon

What do you do when it‘s February and you‘re consciously trying to #ReadBlackAuthors more, but you‘re stressed and just want a trashy romance? I personally found a new-to-me, awesome author in Weatherspoon, ignored the questionable title, downloaded and devoured this super-sexy, sweet romance with an awesome leading lady in one Sunday night.

It‘s really 🔥🔥🔥, with solid writing and a great hook in the epilogue that led me to book 2.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

peanutnine I started with this one as well and found out afterwards that it is a spin-off character story from a longer series of hers that I now want to go back and read 3y
sprainedbrain @peanutnine oh my. Now I probably need to read that, too! I really like this author so will be on the lookout. 3y
MeganAnn I‘m feeling the same way! Want to read romances instead of the #lgp2e book and all the library books I should be reading... I started the tagged book so at least it checks the #readblackauthors box and scratches the romance itch 😆 3y

sprainedbrain @MeganAnn ooooooh. I still haven‘t read the first one in this series, but I‘ve been meaning to read Alyssa Cole. 3y
Prairiegirl_reading What about the romances written by Stacey Abrams, nom de plume Selena Montgomery? There are a bunch, I haven‘t read them but apparently they are steamy. 3y
MeganAnn @sprainedbrain I highly recommend her Reluctant Royals series - the one I‘m reading now is the last book. I‘ve loved every book in it so far! 😍 They are all available on Hoopla too if you use that. Probably not as steamy is the one you just finished, but they do have a little 🔥 Start with: 3y
sprainedbrain @Prairiegirl_reading I‘ve got her on my list, too! I go through phases when I need romance so like to keep a running list. 😉 3y
Liz_M I just listened to a code switch podcast titled “Black Kiss-story“ which refers to this list of Black-Authored Historical Romance Novels:

CarolynM Sometimes a little 🔥 is exactly what you need🙂 3y
sprainedbrain @Liz_M oh that‘s great! Thanks 😊 3y
sprainedbrain @CarolynM yes ma‘am! 😉 3y
Bookzombie I‘m pretty sure I have another one her books on my TBR list, but I definitely stacked this one and the sequel you posted too! 3y

📚 I had some good book mail this week! I used some gift cards, got my next book club book, and got the most perfect chihuahua reading stamp from a friend!
✊🏽 In light of the disgusting terrorist attack on our Capitol this week, I am reminded by BIPOC Instagram friends that “the books are not enough.” I promise I know this and I am continuing my work on being anti racist.

Yet another gem I wouldn't have known about if not for Listy! I knew I had to read this as soon as I checked out clipping's song and fell in love. It's beautifully written and Daveed Diggs' reading is SO GOOD! Just like Kindred, I cannot recommend this enough.

Stories have power and this one needs to be required reading!
My middle school teachers (to their credit) tried to supplement our sanitized textbooks with other (less false) sources, and projects/exercises (make of that what you will), but I still needed that re-education I got in community college, and I am thankful for it.
Bookwise: I am hooked on OEB, and I can't wait to read more of her.

This is a tale of two women, set in the years of the Harlem Renaissance. It was originally published in 1929. It‘s a novella about the choices we make, and in that time not everyone chose to embrace their Black community. (As we‘ve seen with this year‘s The Vanishing Half from Brit Bennett, the feeling continues.) 👇🏻

BarbaraTheBibliophage Passing is emotional and focused on two childhood friends with diverging life paths who reconnect after time passes. It‘s the classic case of a stable person, comfortable in their life, being confronted by another person‘s wild card behaviors and emotions. Excellent book! 4y
ManyWordsLater This book is high on my list! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ManyWordsLater It‘s quite short—easy to fit in between other stuff! 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Angitron I feel like I could read it again (and in print rather than audio) and find even more good stuff. 4y
TrishB I have since brought because of your review and the fact that it was 49p on kindle! Not even 99p 😁 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @TrishB 49p?? You can‘t go wrong there!! Hope you like it. 😊 4y

#ARC - Knock at Midnight and Our Malady (both excellent) & User‘s Guide to Democracy
#readblackauthors - Knock, Hood Feminism, Passing, Proof of Love (also all excellent)
#indigenousauthor #nonfictionnerds - Braiding Sweetgrass (lovely)
#irlbookgroup - White Fragility
#bottomofmyTBR: Autobiography of a Yogi
#litsypolitico - Unbelievable

LiteraryinLawrence That‘s awesome, Barbara! 4y
Cinfhen Hi!!!! So glad to see you had an impactful reading month 🙌🏻♥️ 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen It was a good month - 13 total plus two Audible Originals. Heavy choices though, man ... 4y
Cinfhen I noticed there wasn‘t any fluff in this bunch 🤪 4y

Hard-hitting and vulnerable, this is worth every moment. Kendall does a great job on the audiobook, and I‘m glad I heard her thoughts and ideas in *her* voice. Published in early 2020, this covers all the racial justice issues in the news (and a few that *should be* in headlines) from a Black woman‘s perspective. Activism in action!

Social justice readers, I hope you‘ll request this from the library or buy yourself a copy. (Pub 9/8/20) Barnett mixes memoir with hard, cold facts and harrowing injustices. Still, the inspiration and admiration value is high. She fights like hell for her clients and does so much good for the world. It‘s the human side of The New Jim Crow. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
