Hahahahaha - at me from 5 years ago being like “gonna read this soon” THE OPTIMISM! I am still totally planning on reading this soon!

I also miss this fence from the clothes line courtyard of my old apartment building. It was just aesthetically pleasing!

ravenlee “Soon” is such a relative term… 3mo

Having endured the Greek Mythology-level tragedy that was “Clariel”, you find in “Goldenhand” a wider scope to the Old Kingdom Series by Garth Nix. Sabriel, the Abhorsen along with Lirael, is once again faced with staving off Chlorr of the Mask and its quest to bring about the collapse of not only the Old Kingdom but life in general for the wrongs it endured in life centuries past. A fascinating take on a fallen hero‘s redemption.

It would seem Garth Nix‘s Old Kingdom series has replaced John le Carré‘s George Smiley series in my reading list. ?

Clariel, the reluctant hero pulled along the narrative unwillingly through others' machinations and schemes, finally finds her place within the story through revenge but finds it hollow in the end.

Awk_Word_Smith Nix built a beautiful fantasy world in the first three installments of the Abhorsen series. However, while those iterations focused on events within the life of Sabriel, this story jumps hundreds of years into the past, a time when magic had fallen out of favor among the denizens of Belisaere while the Guilds rule in the place of a king who will neither rule nor abdicate until his granddaughter returns to replace him as Head of State. 8mo
Awk_Word_Smith An obvious political thriller compared to the rather straightforward fantasy fare of the first three, it was an incredibly gratifying dalliance away from the Sabriel timeline and a much closer inspection of Mogget's more malevolent spirit. It also was a deeper look into the differences between Charter Magic and Free Magic in the Old Kingdom. 8mo

Starting the fourth book in this series or rather a prequel to the original trilogy. Sad that Tim Curry was unable to narrate it, but completely understandable given his health issues. Graeme Malcolm is doing justice to the text nonetheless.

Love, love, love. Absolutely loved this addition to the Abhorsen books.

Although brief, happy at the appearance of the Disreputable Dog and Mogget. Absolutely perfect.

While I had not really cared for the Clariel book, I can see why it was written. It gave deep dimensions to a character who would have otherwise just been a random ghost in distress.

The whole Abhorsen series by Garth Nix is pure magic.

The parts I didn't like about the story was from a personal viewpoint. Mainly, the Abhorsen family members did not meet my expectations of what I thought they would be like. I think I enjoy stories that focus mainly on main characters from the Abhorsen and/or Clayr (again, a personal preference).

Garth Nix storytelling was excellent as always, I have always found his writing beautiful and a joy to read.

This is selfish of me, 😅, I have three Old Kingdom books read by Tim Curry. But I desperately wish that Tim Curry could have read the rest of the Old Kingdom books. ❤️

#SundayFunday Have a great day and remember to tag me!

NataliePatalie Great answer. He also narrated the first few Series of Unfortunate Events audio books! Really enjoyed them. 12mo

LeahBergen Cool! Did you study hieroglyphics at all? I did some classes in university but have forgotten everything, of course. 😆 2y

Leftcoastzen @LeahBergen I‘m more at the DK book level with hieroglyphics!😁I think it would be interesting though. 2y
