Goldenhand | Garth Nix
Goldenhand is the long-awaited fifth installment of Garth Nix's New York Times bestselling Old Kingdom series Lirael is no longer a shy Second Assistant Librarian. She is the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, with dead creatures to battle and Free Magic entities to bind. She's also a Remembrancer, and wielder of the Dark Mirror. When Lirael finds Nicholas Sayre lying unconscious after being attacked by a hideous Free Magic creature, she uses her powers to save him. But Nicholas is deeply tainted with Free magic and Lirael must seek help for him at her childhood home, the Clayr's Glacier. But even as she returns to the Clayr, a messenger is trying to reach Lirael with a dire warning from her long-dead mother, Arielle, about the Witch with No Face. But who is the Witch, and what is she planning? Once more a great danger threatens the Old Kingdom, and it must be forestalled not only in the living world, but also in the cold, remorseless river of Death.

Having endured the Greek Mythology-level tragedy that was “Clariel”, you find in “Goldenhand” a wider scope to the Old Kingdom Series by Garth Nix. Sabriel, the Abhorsen along with Lirael, is once again faced with staving off Chlorr of the Mask and its quest to bring about the collapse of not only the Old Kingdom but life in general for the wrongs it endured in life centuries past. A fascinating take on a fallen hero‘s redemption.

It would seem Garth Nix‘s Old Kingdom series has replaced John le Carré‘s George Smiley series in my reading list. ?

Love, love, love. Absolutely loved this addition to the Abhorsen books.

Although brief, happy at the appearance of the Disreputable Dog and Mogget. Absolutely perfect.

While I had not really cared for the Clariel book, I can see why it was written. It gave deep dimensions to a character who would have otherwise just been a random ghost in distress.

The whole Abhorsen series by Garth Nix is pure magic.

This is selfish of me, 😅, I have three Old Kingdom books read by Tim Curry. But I desperately wish that Tim Curry could have read the rest of the Old Kingdom books. ❤️

#SundayFunday Have a great day and remember to tag me!

NataliePatalie Great answer. He also narrated the first few Series of Unfortunate Events audio books! Really enjoyed them. 2y
Larkken I found out curry did the first three when I checked out sabriel on a whim and literally squee‘d at work I was so excited. Good answer! 🤩 2y

I read this back in December…🥴 I‘ve absolutely loved the Old Kingdom/Abhorsen series, and I enjoyed picking up with Lirael‘s story in this book. I needed a bit more of Lirael! I enjoyed her storyline with Nick, as well as the introduction of a new POV character offering a glimpse of the northern peoples. The callback to Clariel was nice as well. The main trilogy is still the strongest part of this series, but the others are well worth reading.

Centique I love this series too! Have to do a reread at some point. Lirael is my fave 😍 3y
BarbaraJean @Centique They‘re SO good! Have you read the newest one? It‘s a prequel focusing on Sabriel‘s parents. 3y
Centique No I haven‘t! I will get onto that - thanks for letting me know. 3y
BarbaraJean @Centique You're welcome! I'm glad he's written more beyond the original three--it's such a great fantasy world to explore further. 3y

I read for a total of 5:14 hours yesterday and managed to finish Goldenhand. It was good but didn't have the same feeling of urgency the earlier books in the series do. It felt just a little more lighthearted, which was very strange for this series. I enjoyed it though!

I realized I didn't keep track of how long I read yesterday for the #20in4 #newyearspecial, so, conservatively, I'm gonna say about 4 hours. I finished two short stories in the Old Kingdom series and started Goldenhand.

I've now finished my reread of the Old Kingdom books. Goldenhand was probably my least favourite. The narrator did a good job, but also my least favourite out of the three narrators.

I recently found out there will be another book coming out this year, so my reread of the series has been quite timely, as I will definitely be reading that one when it comes out.

This was my #BookSpin @TheAromaofBooks

Overall a nice finish to the series, although Nix still can't write romantic tension or endings to save his life (I believe in the pairing, their relationship just doesn't feel quite earned); at least this one didn't just drop right at the end of the fighting at the last battle. He's a PHENOMENAL world builder, though, and the Charter and Free Magic of the Old Kingdom is great as always, as are the new cultures we get to meet.
Solid YA.

annamatopoetry Hey @Litsy you GOTTA allow more characters for reviews. Double to 1k? 5y

Hey won't you look at that. I didn't even know this book existed until Thursday, but SPL actually had it with only a few holds. Still a gamble whether I'll hand Philip Pullman's second newest before my christmas holiday though.

Throwback to 2016 when I went to a Goldenhand event, won the door prize (unsure where that is currently at, will investigate) where I vowed to reread and catch up with this beautiful series.

Have not quite got around to it yet. Still on the to-do list 😂

I first read Sabriel, the first book in Garth Nix's Abhorsen series when I was thirteen and couldn't put it down. Goldenhand is the fourth installment, and it's as good as the previous three.

I won this bell pendant 2 years ago! Still haven‘t read it yet.... oops! But I have worn the bell... just not recently because I‘m not entirely sure where it is 😬

Finished Number 5 of the Old Kingdom series - man, this series has been such a joy. I love this world, the kick ass heroines, particularly Lirael and the Clayr and their awesome ancient library full of mysterious rooms. Just a perfect rollicking YA fantasy adventure, lots of battles and monsters but never too dark or too light hearted either. I think I‘m going to keep this series as a comforting reread. 😊

mrsmarch @Centique Did you read Clariel? I was a little underwhelmed by it. 6y

Day 22 #riotgrams #currentread. I'm currently reading Goldenhand, the latest, and hopefully not last, addition to the Abhorsen Chronicles. Lirael's story is my favorite and I'm thrilled to be in her world again. Snacking on watermelon with feta and drinking passion tango tea. Yum

I feel a little bad that I started out by judging this audiobook for not being read by Tim Curry.

But I did end up getting swept up in this story. Mostly because in between all my rereadings of the series, I forget just how heavily I identify with Lirael. She was a very important character to me when I was in high school. So I may wish there was a little more of her in this story, but a fantastic addition to the series. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑 #overdrive

Just no. I liked the first three of the series, but the narrator on this is so bad, I just can't keep going. I don't even know what I was feeling about the story (though I didn't get very far into it) because I couldn't get past how awful she was. #pleasestopreadingnow #dnf

Book five in the Abhorsen series.
The series as a whole is one of the best fantasy series I've ever read, with masterful worldbuilding and a magic system that makes sense, along with compelling characters.

In this installment, a messenger seeks Lirael to deliver a message from her mother about a great battle to come. I'm a little disappointed that Ferin's journey took up so many pages that the rest of the story felt rushed.
