Last Child in the Woods
Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder | Richard Louv
13 posts | 24 read | 2 reading | 9 to read
The children and nature movement is fueled by this fundamental idea: the child in nature is an endangered species, and the health of children and the health of the Earth are inseparable. Richard Louv, from the new edition In his landmark work Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv brought together cutting-edge studies that pointed to direct exposure to nature as essential for a childs healthy physical and emotional development. Now this new edition updates the growing body of evidence linking the lack of nature in childrens lives and the rise in obesity, attention disorders, and depression. Louvs message has galvanized an international back-to-nature campaign to Leave No Child Inside. His book will change the way you think about our future and the future of our children. [The] national movement to leave no child inside . . . has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grass-roots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a green hour in each day. . . . The increased activism has been partly inspired by a best-selling book, Last Child in the Woods, and its author, Richard Louv. The Washington Post Last Child in the Woods, which describes a generation so plugged into electronic diversions that it has lost its connection to the natural world, is helping drive a movement quickly flourishing across the nation. The Nations Health This book is an absolute must-read for parents. Hi 👋
This is an intro post for those following #naturalitsy
I'm Debs, based in Derbyshire, UK. Mum to 4 wild beasties, who are now all doing their own thing as we head into teenage years. I've had a love of our natural world since childhood. However, reading the tagged book after becoming a parent made me realise how crucial it is in all our lives. Combined with climate change and environmental crisis,
@LitsyEvents

AllDebooks I began to be engrossed in the subject and striving to what I could as an individual and as part of a collective.
I'm truly excited to see #naturalitsy grow as a group as we share thoughts, books, ideas and news and making new like minded friends is always a bonus.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Hello! I‘m Meagon, a new mom to my own little Wyrmling. 😅❤️ Being out in nature is extremely important to me and I hope to instill the same love of the natural world to my child. I‘ve stacked your tagged book, it sounds perfect! I‘m looking forward to being part of this group and meeting others who have a passion for this little blue ball we call home. ❤️ 2y

AllDebooks @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Hi Meagon, introducing your children to the natural world is just the best, most exciting adventure there is. 😀 2y
AllDebooks @Graywacke oh yay, welcome. I've added you to my tag list 😀 2y
BookwormAHN I'm Ashley, the older I get the closer to nature I feel (if that makes any sense). I've recently gone a tad overboard with house plants and I was always the kid and now adult with a rock collection 😸 2y
AllDebooks @BookwormAHN Hi Ashley, I hear you. I'm very much the same, always collecting treasures on our nature walks 🐚🍃🍂🪶✒️🗿🪨 2y
Dilara Hello Debs! I'm interested too 😁 2y
AllDebooks @Dilara Hi, that's great, I'll add you to my tag list too x 2y
Dilara @AllDebooks Thank you! Really looking forward to learning from you all. 2y
wordslinger42 Hi all! I'm so excited for this group 😊 I'm Alexandria from OH. I've always loved animals and nature, and I'm particularly obsessed with sharks 🦈 I can't wait to read & discuss with all of you! Also, @BookwormAHN it's possible that I've also gone a little overboard with houseplants 😂 2y
Blackink_WhitePaper Hello everyone. I am Akhila. I am from India. I love being out with nature. Trekking, bird & butterfly watching are my hobbies. I have a 2 year old kid. I will take her for small walks & having a small butterfly garden. I am a biochemist & love to read about plant intelligence & evolution. Thank you @AllDebooks for this great initiative. I hope we will learn , grow together & make little effort for the better tmr.🥰 thanks everyone 💐🙏 2y
AllDebooks @Dilara this is going to be so great 📚🤔😍🤓🙌 2y
AllDebooks @wordslinger42 Hi Alexandria 👋 welcome. Loving your enthusiasm, it's on par with mine 😀 2y
AllDebooks @Blackink_WhitePaper Hi Akhila 👋 your days sound busy and fun!! I'm fascinated by plants too. There's so much to explore together, it is going to be great 😊 2y
Blackink_WhitePaper @AllDebooks yeah 😍😻📚💐 2y
Chrissyreadit This sounds like a great hashtag and opportunity! I‘m Chrissy, and love being outside. I became vegetarian in 1989 for environmental reasons and now am vegan, love the natural world and am hoping to turn a chunk of my property into a haven for bees and butterflies. I am excited to see what books and discussions happen via this group! 2y
AllDebooks @Chrissyreadit Hi Chrissy, great to have you with us ❤️ I've been working hard on turning my garden from a barren wilderness inrlto an organic wildlife haven over the last 6 years. It's so worth the effort, seeing so many different species of birds, butterflies, moths, bees and bugs. It's made me so happy 😊 2y
Chrissyreadit @Mitch did you see this? 2y
Mitch @Chrissyreadit I hadn‘t! 🙏 2y
Mitch Hi - I‘ve been a city living nature lover for my whole life and only recently have we moved to the countryside ( Suffolk, U.K.) and everyday I feel like I‘m living my dream. I‘m reading lots about regenerative agriculture at the moment - trying to understand how we can manage the land and make it economically viable. Also love my garden, my veg patch, wild swimming and exploring with my dog! 2y
AllDebooks @Mitch Hi Mitch, great to have you on board, sounds like you're living your best life now 😍 I have posted about a readathon in September, feel free to join in and spread the word. Rewilding and regenerative agriculture are my chosen theme for the year, I've learned so much. My favourite so far has been 2y
AllDebooks @Mitch if you're interested the Soil Association have started a FB group called the Soil Hub, talking about wildlife, organic gardening, permaculture etc x https://www.facebook.com/groups/1130893544377404/?ref=share 2y
jenniferw88 Hi, I'm Jenny, I don't do much as our garden is mainly moss and clay but love learning about the natural world & want to start helping the Earth come back from climate change. 2y
AllDebooks @jenniferw88 hi Jenny 👋 thanks for joining in, lovely to have you with us x 2y

I had to read Julius Caesar twice because I changed schools after 9th grade. I'm still bitter.
I try not to let cover art fool me.
Thanks for tagging me @DarkMina

Scochrane26 I was just complaining yesterday about having to read 4 Shakespeare tragedies in high school & then having to reread Hamlet in college. I understand your pain. I feel my teachers could have assigned us a comedy instead. (edited) 3y
mandarchy @Scochrane26 they really failed when they made us watch the Brando movie. Talk about dull! A comedy would have been great. 3y
DarkMina @mandarchy You‘re welcome! 3y

Chrissyreadit This post made me lol. It stinks when teachers suck the life out of Shakespeare. 3y
mandarchy @Chrissyreadit I like to use this as my " oh yeah, you think you had it bad?" And now as a school librarian I often read a picture book 20 times. I have one book in my library that we estimate that I've read 160 times! 3y
MoonWitch94 Cover art has fooled me more than once, sad to admit it. I hate when teachers kill something as brilliant as Shakespeare!!! Thanks for playing ☺️🌿📚 3y
mandarchy @MoonWitch94 it's funny, after I made my reply it occurred to me that I read picture books several times. Sometimes only 20 times, but my students and I did the math and we estimate that I've read the Library Dragon by Deedy 160 times. I need to give Shakespeare another chance. 3y
MoonWitch94 @mandarchy 😱 oh wow! Yes, that‘s true! I did not even think about picture books! I‘m sure I‘ve read so many of them 100s of times (I used to work in Pre-K). Yes, give The Bard another go! 3y
MoonWitch94 Check out #Shakespearereadalong on Litsy! We‘re working our way through the plays! 3y

Ok, premise is good: kids are less connected with nature and we need to take steps to reverse the trend. But the disdain the author shows for so many groups is self-defeating; and his conclusion is unsustainable. Rather than suggesting manageable steps to involve our family lives in nature he wants us to change the way cities are planned and redistribute the national population. Totally doable, right? This isn‘t a parenting book at all.

ravenlee Six down for #14books14weeks, best thing I can sat about this one. And I only paid $1.50 for it. 5y
LibrarianRyan @ravenlee Thats pretty bad if that is the best thing you can say. 😁 5y

I‘m already getting pissed off at the author‘s obvious biases. So far he‘s made vaguely insulting comments about vegetarians (me) and now he‘s criticizing people who have “a hyperintellectualized perception of other animals.” This is not going the way I expected so far.

Just starting this one today. I admit I really struggle with this issue. I want my daughter to be active, to be adventurous. But I really hate the sweltering heat and humidity (good thing we live in Louisiana!) and I‘m really not ok with picking up critters and such. I love hiking and nature walks and pointing out fascinating stuff. Maybe this book will inspire me.

I enjoyed this even though I didn't agree with everything said in the book. The message is still important: we need to get kids not just outside, but into nature so they can see what it is and want to preserve it.

I believe in teaching kids to hug trees. Glad my friends and family let me "corrupt" their children. Keep 'em wild I say!

JonathanDunne Has a tree ever hugged you back? 7y
Robothugs @JonathanDunne Can't you feel the tree hugging you in return? 7y
read_diverse_books Lol, cute. I don't think I've tried hugging a tree before. But I should! 7y

Shemac77 It does hug you back! Biofeedback. I highly recommend it. But do it away from people so you don't feel self conscious. Then own the shit out of hugging a tree! :). @read_diverse_books @Robothugs @JonathanDunne 7y
Kirstin Aw! I do this too. Trees are magical. 🌳🌲🌱 7y
JonathanDunne @Shemac77 I know. I've hugged my fair share of trees down through the years and I definitely feel the tree hugging me back...It's a peculiar sensation. I don't know if it's coming from my own subconscious or if there really is some kind of connection 7y
Shemac77 I think they do refer to it as a biofeedback. At least that ring a bell. Maybe the wrong bell. Something about your heartbeat being reflected back. Whichever, whatever. It's a fantastic feeling. I'm happy to hear you've been hugging trees. @JonathanDunne 7y
Shemac77 Trees are magical! I love it when I hear people do the same. @Kirstin 7y

#FunFactFriday - from 2005-2009, I was a full time camp counselor/experiential education instructor! I worked at a camp in Ohio and one in New York. It was both the hardest and best job I've had - one of those times I wish I had appreciated it more. It continues to shape me, influencing my ethics and my art every day. (I wrote/directed one film about summer camp, and two of my writing projects are also about camp.)

OSChamberlain That's amazing! I'd love to write a play or film but I have no idea about the screenwriting process. I always write prose. 8y
bookishkai @brendanmleonard camp counselors unite! I was a CIT and a counselor for 8 years between two different camps, and it's an experience like no other. It's influenced my creative pursuits and my music and politics, and I'm so lucky to have had those experiences. 8y

Thought-provoking read. I was hardly outside as a child; trying to build a different family culture for our girls.
