Buddhist Boot Camp | Timber Hawkeye
post image

Oh my god, all these years I‘ve been trying to be a Christian, I‘ve actually been a Buddhist. I really wish someone would have alerted me sooner.

wanderinglynn I don‘t see why you can‘t be both. The path to nirvana mirrors that which Jesus spoke of to reach heaven. There are many parallels between Jesus‘s teachings and Buddhism. 5y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn and yet so many Christians, I‘d even say most, believe you absolutely cannot be both. I know for myself, personally, I cannot be both because of my own beliefs and what I have discovered historically. I know a wonderful woman who is both, openly. I think the idea that one could be both is very Buddhist in nature. It is very much not Christian, at least not mainstream Christian. (edited) 5y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn this teaching here is obviously far more open, inclusive, and peaceful than the standard Christian view of sexuality. I think this is far more healthy. After all the time I‘ve spent recovering from my catholic school sex ed class and catholic upbringing attitude toward my own sexuality, this is just healthier and more loving. This actually matches with what we know medically and psychologically of human sexuality. 5y

wanderinglynn Yes, I‘d say you are correct. But at the end of the day, no one should dictate what any one person believes or doesn‘t because faith is, and should be, a very personal thing. For me, one doesn‘t preclude the other. Although I grew up as a Christian, I actually relate to the teachings of Buddhism more. For me, religion has been tainted by too many people using it as a cloak for bigotry and injustice. 5y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn it doesn‘t demonize it or make it a negative. It doesn‘t make it something to conquer or over come. It just is, and as long as you‘re responsible and respectful in how you use it, it‘s perfectly fine. I think this is saner than teaching abstinence, and it‘s certainly more realistic, especially in schools. 5y
wanderinglynn Yes, Buddhism is more about one‘s own spiritual path—it‘s a very individual journey. That is different than what I‘ve really experienced taught in any Christian denomination. 5y
wanderinglynn Sounds like you‘re getting a lot out of this book. 👍🏻👍🏻 5y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn exactly!!! I like the way he talks about Jesus in this book. Jesus is mentioned, he‘s mentioned in a very positive light, but in a “focus on the message and not the messenger” kind of way. I think once Jesus‘ message was highjacked in the first century it became something it was never intended to be, and that is where I bowed out. I believe in his teachings. I believe in the man. I don‘t believe in the religion. 5y
GingerAntics @wanderinglynn I really am, and I totally recommend this book to anyone open to the “personal journey” mindset of spirituality. 5y
CollapsingLibrary I‘ve been looking for a book to introduce me to Buddhism a little more for a couple months and I think I might give this a try! 5y
GingerAntics @hjreviews I would suggest it. It tries really hard to stick with the original teachings and leave out the various things different cultures have added to Buddhism. It‘s actually quite nice. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am. 5y
Gezemice Sounds like a lovely book. 5y
GingerAntics @Gezemice it really is 5y
