This book was wonderful and powerful. It answered a lot of things I‘ve always wondered about. It was clear and concise. It was a great introduction, and I think it attempts to build a bridge (at least in people‘s minds) between all the different traditions in the world. I don‘t necessarily agree with some of his thoughts here (or I would like further clarification or context for that particular entry), 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics but overall this was just the book I was looking for. This is the first time I‘ve heard someone talk about their childhood and it reflected my own childhood. I greatly enjoyed his candor, and I liked where he explained all the different things that were part of his experience - Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic - it none are part of his personal identity. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 6y

GingerAntics I‘ve struggled with that, but it‘s nice knowing I don‘t have to make any of those things part of my identity while also allowing them to simultaneously exist peacefully. can see why this book is required reading in some situations, and I firmly believe this should be required reading in more places around America and around the world. Even the parts I struggled with gave me things to think about and a new perspective. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 6y

Gezemice @GingerAntics Thanks! I have dabbled in meditation and found the Buddhist teachings to be very calming and accepting. Instead of telling you “this is the absolute truth and if you don‘t believe it you go to hell”, they tell you - “you can find it out for yourself, here is how you get started”. Buddhism is not really a religion as in believing in a god, it is more of a life style. 6y

GingerAntics @Gezemice exactly. Partitioners will tell you it‘s not a religion, it‘s a philosophy. It‘s quite open and the emphasis is on being the best you possible, not perfection, which I particularly like. There aren‘t any fixes for not being perfect, either. It‘s so much more relaxed. 6y

GingerAntics @Gezemice there is also a lack of an insistence to join anything. You don‘t have to join this or that to be considered legit or genuine, it‘s all very personal and it can stay that way. There is no pressure to be one thing or another. I sort of dabbled off and on for a while now, but this is my first real step into seriously looking into it. I‘ve already got a Buddhist reading list, and the book I‘m reading now is adding to it. lol 6y

This really struck me. He‘s still not sure if he should call himself Buddhist or not. I want to say he‘s as confused as I am, but maybe while I am confused, he has figured out how to allow it all to coexist peacefully. Perhaps my “problem” is that I‘m focused more on the label or labels than I am on myself.

I think, especially for women, this is something we should take really seriously. Even the things we say to ourselves are very powerful. What if we all started saying nicer, still true or actually true, things about ourselves, to ourselves? The world would be a much different place.

I can‘t tell you the number of times people seem genuinely interested in something they‘ve asked about and after I describe all the changes I‘ve made and the progress that‘s been made, I get some kind of response along the lines of “yeah but that‘s not as far as I think you should be. Your progress is crap.”

GingerAntics @Rachel.Rencher although I do think that if everyone (of almost everyone) went to this 20 hour work week, things would have to be cheaper or no one would be able to afford it so all these companies would just go out of business. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just a thought. It would basically have to be all of society saying “yeah we‘re not doing this anymore, we want to enjoy life. Thanks.” Which, of course, will never happen. 6y

GingerAntics @Rachel.Rencher when I said he was on to something, I was just saying that this would give people more work/life balance and would prevent a lot of physical and mental illnesses. Unfortunately, I don‘t think it‘s actually workable for most people. He‘s found a way to make it work in Hawaii, but I know plenty of people (I am one of these people) who can only find part time work, and we all struggle to make ends meet and keep roofs over our heads. 6y

Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics one of the many things that has frustrated me about economics is that the system is rigged against us because we live in a global capitalist driven market. That does not mean I‘m 100% socialist either- but if we look at economies in Norway and Finland we would see a work life balance. They recognize that we need both. Prior to the 80‘s it was common for one parent to work but the global market created a system that required two to 6y

Chrissyreadit Work and singles to need 2-3 jobs. The best would be 20 hours a week and all minimum needs- food, housing , utilities are covered. Then people could work more for luxuries like better homes, better vehicles, vacations, etc. of course I believe quality health care and quality education should also be provided via taxes- but again, if you want specialty things you would pay for yourself. Or even provide so many hours/ years of service for education (edited) 6y

Chrissyreadit That could be spread out over years- and still provide ample opportunity for work life balance. I loved Buddhist Boot Camp, but where you live and past life events as well as family commitments impact the choices we make all the time. I do get angry when people suggest it‘s our choices. Not always true. 6y

I think it‘s a rather simplistic view of why people choose what they choose, but like he said this is his life and what works for him. I also don‘t particularly like the part about “you choose to suffer.” So how are you choosing to suffer when someone else causes your suffering? There was a part in here about “if you‘re being abused, have enough self respect to walk away.” Well, how does 6y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit that work for kids being abused? Kids chat just walk away. I‘d love to have a conversation with this guy. He seems like an interesting person. There is a lot in this book I genuinely agree with, so I‘m not throwing the baby out with the bath water. I just don‘t think this is all realistic for most people. Not because of priorities, either, but because of the way our world works. 6y

Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit loving this conversation guys. I think there‘s always a choice, but sometimes the options are unworkable. As in if I don‘t work this much I starve and I‘m homeless. It‘s a choice but not a realistic one that anyone can make. And as you say family commitments make things much harder. I can take risks someone who needs to provide stability for others can‘t. Things are never simple and people have different needs both physically and 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I totally agree with that. I think it comes down to knowing what your workable options are, even if the only one is what you‘re already doing, and then making that work. I‘d love to sell everything I own and move to Hawaii, but I wouldn‘t be able to pull that off the way he did. I think different temperaments need to be taken into account as well. There are people that like more structure and others that are more chill. 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I think it can have a very negative impact on people with mental health issues, physical health issues, and abuse histories. To say how I think about/deal with/ do with my past abuse can impact how it effects me now is one thing. That‘s true. To say my choices cause my suffering is dangerous. I was a kid. What did I choose? I was traumatized. What did I choose? Someone else made choices that I didn‘t get a say in. (edited) 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I think the same can be said about any kind of trauma. We shouldn‘t tell rape victims or soldiers their choices did this. “You chose to be a soldier so just choose something different now and your PTSD will just go away.” Not only is that ass hole to the highest degree, it‘s completely delusional and incorrect. I think it‘s a mentality that people need to be INCREDIBLY careful with. 6y

Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I agree. I know many people who struggle. And foster kids who age out statistically struggle significantly. It is maddening and heartbreaking. I know many good people who describe sacrifices they made and do not understand how privileged they are to have an option to make sacrifices. 6y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit right? There is a certain privilege to choosing to make sacrifices. People don‘t understand that. Meanwhile, there are plenty of people who make sacrifices not by choice, but because it‘s survival. They choose to go without things they need because they just need something else more or because their kid needs something too, and that‘s their priority. (edited) 6y

Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit yes! I‘ve had things harder than a lot of people but I‘ve also had a lot of options others in similar situations to myself don‘t have. It‘s about awareness on how others might feel and why they can‘t just do what you did. 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl exactly. We all need to remember that there is no one size-fits-all solution to anything. He‘s upfront about that. He says multiple times “this is my life and what worked for me, that doesn‘t mean it‘s going to be your thing,” so I feel like he‘s got at least some knowledge of that, but then he admits telling people to just make different choices when they ask about how to make it work for them, so it‘s not a complete knowledge. 6y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit @Weaponxgirl so this same guy said this. What he does with this now is his choice, yes. But what choice did he have as a kid? He suffered and that wasn‘t because of any choice he made, but a choice his parents made. That‘s where I‘m curious about his mentality toward this, toward the abuse he admits he faced. 6y

Weaponxgirl Do you think it‘s bad wording on his part. Because it would seem to me (even though I haven‘t read the book) that maybe he is saying it‘s our choice to let ourselves suffer because of the past? Even though I think that‘s simplistic as some things just are that traumatic for some people but there is a element of us having choice in how we treat past traumas, get help ect. 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I don‘t know if it‘s bad wording or if we‘re/I‘m putting things together that never went together. Each little entry is a different email he sent to a friend or family member over the course of 8-9 years and I don‘t think they‘re in chronological order even. So he talks about his own trauma and choosing how he interacts with it now, like you said. Other times he‘s all about our own choices. (edited) 6y

He did a TEDtalk apparently, so that‘s going to be my next stop; although, Andy Puddicombe set the bar REALLY high for this sort of thing, so no pressure Timber. No pressure. lol (edited) 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I also think that it comes down to context as well. There were likely emails that came before what we‘re seeing and emails that came after, so we‘re not seeing the context either. These could be about very specific things that we know nothing about. 6y

Chrissyreadit I think he provided a relatable context with the concept that we can break or change a cycle. Sometimes people have ingrained the beliefs of their abusers so much they do not even realize it. I work in a clinic that serves a large number of adults living with addiction and trauma. They will bring their children to me for behavior support- and tell me how they were spanked, beat etc- and it didn‘t hurt them- while besides addiction they struggle (edited) 6y

Chrissyreadit With having safe healthy relationships. I also know people who enter the military are disproportionately recruited from neighborhoods of poverty and often enter with trauma to begin with. It actually makes me angry. We effectively say if your a poor kid your life is less valued to you can risk your life and health... I may be bitter. @Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics (edited) 6y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I never considered the military recruiting methods, but that‘s a very valid point. The military doesn‘t recruit at rich schools, they go to poorer high schools. They sell it as “free college” or “free advancement in society” but in the end it‘s really “society can afford to live without you if you die.” 6y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I completely agree with that. It‘s amazing the people who are angry and messed in the head are the first ones to say “my daddy/mama whooped me and look how good I turned out.” They don‘t tie that to their negative characteristics or life situations, they don‘t tie that to their lower grades or lack of ability to verbally end an argument. They just see that they‘re alive still and credit assault for it. 🙄 No idea why. 6y
