Eleanore of Avignon: A Novel | Elizabeth DeLozier
post image

I am slow going on this challenge because I‘m also reading other books not on the list ( Bookclubs, buddy reads, sister said I had to drop everything and read The Correspondent by Virginia Evans), but I did finish the first of my #14BooksIn14Weeks
This is a lovely debut novel about a midwife & herbalist in Avignon, France during the 1300s black plague.
I‘m finding myself drawn to midwives and herbalists …

Enjoying this book from a debut author I met at Adventures By The Book Superbook 6 in San Diego in March.
A Healer & Herbalist trying to protect her people of Avignon, France from the 1437 Black Plague Provence.

I am finding I love books about Female Healers, Herbalists, & Midwives

Here‘s my hopeful #14booksin14weeks ! Starting with Eleanore and Gabriële

Liz_M Nice stack! Persepolis is one of free graphic books that worked for me. 3w
tpixie @Liz_M yes, I don‘t necessarily enjoy reading graphic novels either. I have the first one of Persepolis & enjoyed it a few years ago #blameitonlitsy , so during #indiebookstoreday when I saw the complete set I decided to buy it! 3w

Pickpick

I read books about diseases frequently but still learned things from this book geared towards kids.

This book is absolutely bonkers. Arthurian-like quest/pilgrimage set in plague-ridden France in the Middle Ages but with the religious and supernatural themes cranked up to 100. An orphan, an excommunicated knight and a shamed priest are traveling south to Avignon to what you know will be an apocalyptic event. The horror is Lovecraftian and the humour is dark which compliments the grim and grimy setting. Top notch.

Mehso-so

LOVED reading about the small village being ravaged by the plague and the difficult decision to close their gates and quarantine themselves from the rest of Derbyshire. The story is based on a real village Eyam and how they handled the Bubonic Plague in 1665-1666.

But oh how I hated the ending. The last 50 pages or so made me mad because they ruined an otherwise beautiful book.

Beginning=5 stars, Ending=2 stars. So overall a So-So from me.

117/150 It took me awhile to get into this book, I thought it dragged terribly in the beginning, but once Kiven was able to talk and interact with the people in the past, the story got much more interesting. Usually with dual storyline books, I find one part more interesting than the other, but Willis kept both the past and present stories gripping, so I didn't mind when it flipped from one to the other. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Andrew65 Well done 🎄🎄🎄 I read this many years ago and remember enjoying it. Like you I also remember it taking a long time to get going. 6mo
