Terrible Things: An Allegory of the Holocaust | Stephen Gammell, Eve Bunting

Pickpick

It‘s been quite a bit since I was a children‘s librarian, but I still like reading picture books from time to time. Recently there was one of those “help me find this book based on this vague description” posts on librarian FB and at the end of the, I realized I was not at all familiar with this Eve Bunting book… and now I am. Great message, a little scary and sad (it is an allegory about the Holocaust), excellent illustrations.

This was a cute read. A young Jewish girl and her family wish to vacation at The Inn at Lake Devine in Vermont in the 60‘s but the proprietor does not allow Jews. Young Natalie decides to take matters into her own hands and sneaks in with a friends family. This begins a lifelong obsession with seeking revenge on the Inn. Romantic entanglements ensue. Enjoyable and glad it‘s off my tbr shelf.

Ugh, this was rough. I was so bored. Nothing happened. I felt connected to no one (minus Junia the mule 😆) and struggled to finish this. (25)

#StorySettings Day 28: The #Island is one of the most disturbing picturebooks for young people that I often recommend. At the very core of this book is an overwhelming fear of those who are different. The storytelling straightforward, the plot crystal clear with a continual build-up that puts a growing lump in the reader‘s throat as one witnesses the extent of the many atrocities people tend to commit in the name of fear. https://wp.me/pDlzr-40F

Byron Graves‘ debut novel is a winner! HS sophomore Tre loves basketball and plays his heart out in honor of his brother Jaxon who died last year. It‘s hard for his mom and dad to “see” Tre when they are still grieving their older son. Tre is a strong protagonist - he is partly based on the Ojibwa author‘s life in Minnesota.

Tre is a sophomore, and his family is dealing with the recent death of his older brother. This story is about his family dealing with that grief, but it‘s also about friendship, crushes, the pressure of high school sports, and figuring out how those things work together. It‘s also about a Native American team proving themselves, and includes some action packed basketball games. 🏀

Due to language and alcohol use, I would consider this mature YA.

Daisey I received an audiobook edition of this book through the Libro.fm Educator ALC program.

Brilliant! Two years after 9/11, a commission is formed to build a memorial. All is well until the commission discovers that the winning design was submitted by a Muslim.
