2/5⭐ A weird combo of proper contraindication/safety warnings, false info, & bizarre/unrealistic foods to avoid (e.g. oranges, black pepper). The sources are just a list of notes in the back with no access dates or in-text indications that they exist. The supplements/herbs sections include info on what they supposedly do but not quantities/frequencies. I feel overwhelmed & like I don't have an action plan for actually implementing anything.
This was okay. I listened on #audio and likely wouldn‘t have stayed with it otherwise. No real new info, the parts the Dr. contributed were worthwhile and encouraging, the main author was a bit annoying and, honestly, sexist. This one hasn‘t aged well but the basic premise, keep moving, don‘t eat crap, and stay engaged with your community, is valid. I finished it at my gym that just opened! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks
Awe. ☹️
Thanks to Hachette books for sending this spoonie a book on long illness. These authors go over common-sense strategies for dealing with your illness. They cover broad categories (like migraines and GI illness) with tips on finding and communicating with your care team. Then they cover what they‘ve found useful for patients in terms of treatment from supplements to exercise. This is more of a holistic book and won‘t necessarily help you ⬇️
Not even my Elizabeth Warren bookend has a plan for this over-ambitious TBR! I definitely won‘t finish all of these, and once again, I‘m surprised by the two chosen. The Guide I acquired this week from a hardcover sale at my local indie, Bluestocking Social in Evansville, IN. Love them! Long Illness is a gifted copy from #HachetteBooks, and this spoonie is looking forward to it! #HBSocialClub #bookspin #doublespin
I have mixed-feeling. This book had a lot of helpful content for how to manage stress. However, it discusses neuro linguistic programming as a way to manage stress. NLP is the pseudoscience that has been used in the NXIVM cult. It can make people more susceptible to gaslighting. I‘m not a fan of that part of the book.
“Look your perfectionism program right in the eyes and make a mental shift as you remember that you are enough just as you are, doing or not doing.”
“Explore the personal benefits of accomplishing your goal to yourself and others. Focus on doing what you do because you want to, not because you need to. Avoid guilt words, such as “need” and “have to.” Guilt will keep you stuck.”

“Perfectionism and procrastination walk hand in hand: “If I do what I want or feel that I need to do, and the end result is not perfect, then I have failed. So, to avoid the emotions and experience of failure, I will put this project off for a while. In this way, I‘m safe.”

“When we worry about what other people will think, we end up becoming our own publicist and exhaust ourselves by protecting our reputation. We stress out doing daily damage control when we could be putting that energy toward learning, growing, and creating solutions.”
