Pickpick

4 US Presidents have been assassinated in office & this book offers a fascinating look at what could have happened if they had survived. Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, & John F. Kennedy never got to complete their presidential terms, as each succumbed to an assassin's bullet. After examining what happened in the lead-up to their deaths & the weapons used, the author then considers what could have happened if they had lived.

OutsmartYourShelf Before starting this book, I knew the most about Lincoln & Kennedy, & had never really read anything about Garfield & McKinley. Very remiss of me, I feel. Here we are given a brief snapshot of their lives - enough to whet the appetite for reading more & there are some good starting points given in the book. The more important elements are the assassinations themselves & what happened with some searching 13h
OutsmartYourShelf questions being asked of those involved in protecting the President in at least three of the cases. The 'what ifs' are intriguing from a purely academic standpoint, but at times they feel a little too sunshine & rainbows. Overall it is an engrossing read which asks some pertinent questions alongside 'What If?'.

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Collective Ink Limited/Chronos Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

#TodayILearned that James Garfield died due to the doctors trying to save him infecting his wound rather than directly dying of the gunshot.

Up next for Nonfiction November #NFN

tpixie I just went to Newport RI for a weekend author event with #WilligWhiteWilliams. I was able to tour The Breakers, but not Marble house. I may need to get on a Vanderbilt reading jag. Before I knew I was going on the mansion tour, maybe coincidentally I bought 12h
Lcsmcat I listened to this, read by Cooper and loved it. 5h

Pickpick

Parts of this were very dated ( management of household staff 😂), some were interesting as historical documents (suggested menus with prunes once a day), and some were still timely (purchasing power and the importance of voting.) #NFN

#TodayILearned

In 1935 when Eleanor Roosevelt was asked if a woman can ever be president she replied “Not soon, but someday.”

Top picks for #NonfictionNovember #NFN

The top 3 are the ones I want to tackle first. We‘ve been working with an amazing qualified R+ dog trainer for our littlest doodle who‘s doing much better with her anxiety and reactivity. Thankful for mental health meds for dogs! But I really want to dig deeper to boost her quality of life even more.

And I definitely want to address my menopause symptoms so I can be at my best to help littlest doodle.

AnnCrystal Poor sweet puppy 💕🙏🐕🐾💝. 2d
DogMomIrene @AnnCrystal 💜💜💜 After 7 years of trying a lot of different training techniques, we found our current trainer, who encouraged us to see a veterinary behaviorist. Best money spent ever. Her anxiety meds have helped her so much. We‘re at the last hump of helping her feel more secure in the world. 2d
AnnCrystal @DogMomIrene 😘💕🐕💝. Poor baby. Glad you've finally found something to help her. Have you tried those anxiety coats for dogs? Like the ThunderShirt. Not sure if they work... (edited) 2d

sherrisilvera My maltipoo is a hot anxiety mess. Tried the thundershirts and some meds. Nothing has worked. 2d
DogMomIrene @AnnCrystal The swaddling thunder shirt can help a little. Usually in home environment. The meds have helped her relax much more at home. Like she‘s finally getting deep restful sleep. She has some noise phobia, but I‘m using pattern games & positive reinforcement to normalize booms, which has helped enormously. 20h
DogMomIrene @sherrisilvera I‘m so sorry. Did you try different dosing & med combos? We‘re really fortunate to have an amazing vet behaviorist who got med selection & dosing really accurate out of the box, which lead to Lizzie being able to sleep … actual deep restful sleep. She‘s actually gained weight because she‘s not burning as many calories from being anxious. 20h
DogMomIrene @dabbe Thank you!💜💜💜 I really try to make her life as good as possible. 20h
AnnCrystal @DogMomIrene that's good 🙏💝. Sweet little baby. Never realized how serious anxiety could be for our fur babies. Glad you found yourself a good vet 💕🐕💝. 16h

Day 1 of #NFN in the books. #TodayILearned

When you‘re debating the key to success is to articulate your opponent‘s perspective better than they could themselves.

From the How To Be A Better Human podcast

Adding this to my list of books I‘d like to read for #NonfictionNovember

Saw this author in the documentary The M Factor, which aired on PBS. Highly recommend. Can watch online. May need to use a VPN if you‘re outside the US.

Pickpick

I‘d recommend reading this nonfiction of 10 distinct wrongly convicted cases in segments. It‘s heartbreaking and I have so much gratitude and respect for those passionate to take up the case and do the work fighting for justice of those wrongly accused. I don‘t use the word shame lightly - but those in the legal system who knowingly work to retain wrongly convicted to save their own reputation - shame on them. #NFN

November's list for #ReadYourKindle &, although there will be some fiction reads, I'm concentrating on nonfiction for #NFN (Nonfiction November).

Anyone doing anything for #NonFictionNovember #NFN next month? Anyone interested?

Seabreeze_Reader I probably will read at least one NF book but I'm not a super fast reader of more complex NF subjects. 4w
JenReadsAlot I'll primarily read NF next month 4w
TheDaysGoBy I‘ll probably read some. Not sure how many I‘ll get through since NF typically is a slower read but I do like to 4w
