Imma let Carla sum this one up for me😂 I liked this, but I didn't love it like I loved Happy Days or Krapp's Last Tape; still good though!

So, I've read all the short plays by Beckett in this book, but because I have no spatial awareness to speak of, nothing made sense. They're basically instructions aimed at actors/dances explaining how they should move on the stage and my mind went blank. Thankfully, there are filmed versions on Youtube.

KathyWheeler I think that‘s the best way to read plays. They were written to be performed, not read. I had a drama professor once who only taught plays that he could also get a taped performance of. 1y
Dilara @KathyWheeler So true. And understanding older plays is so much easier when you're watching a performance than when you're reading them on your own: the actors have done the hard work for you :-)
In the case of Quad, because it's all stage directions and no dialogue, watching is also quicker than reading...

Winnie‘s babbling as a comfort measure, a protective layer to stave off real feeling & suffering. Boredom to be avoided but also welcomed as an alternative to pain. Language as distracting noise: quotes, clichés, memories, banal catch phrases. Comforting, but without meaning. Change & stasis together. Beast vs. reason. Lack of awareness. Habits to protect self from knowledge. Optimism and anguish. Armpit stink jokes. Cheerfully pushing back pain.

Saw a solid production last night & reminded of how much I love the character of Winnie & 💜 this play. Such a marathon for the actor! Winnie is so annoying but so lovable. Fragility & perseverance. Nagging & care. Language as a way to control time. Habits, ritual, to maintain mental stability. Cartesian mind/body. Imposing order on chaos. Distraction. Comfort. Hope. “what I find so wonderful” “Words fail, there are times when even they fail.”1961

I visited the Jasper Johns exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was inspiring.

I spotted a staff member sitting by an open display of a large book. On closer inspection, it was an opportunity to put on gloves, and actually turn the pages in this valuable book. Well, I have seen this done in the movies, but had not had the experience myself. I stood in line, and now I can check it off my list!

Lindy That experience would thrill me too. 😊 2y
DivineDiana @Lindy It was exciting! My friend chose to continue to look at the exhibit, while I waited in line. Only a Litten can understand my glee! ❤️ 2y
Lindy @DivineDiana Yes, that‘s one of the reasons why I‘m grateful for Litsy. 🤗 2y

merelybookish How fun! Totally would have waited in line as well. 2y
DivineDiana @Lindy As am I! ❤️ 2y
DivineDiana @merelybookish I think all of my Litsy friends would have joined the queue! I felt like such a book scholar! ❤️ (edited) 2y

DivineDiana @TieDyeDude I thought so too! 🧤📚🙂 2y
MicheleinPhilly 😮That‘s amazing! We‘re planning on checking out that exhibit so I will keep my eyes peeled for this. Did you eat at Stir? My cousin is the executive chef. ☺️ 2y
DivineDiana @MicheleinPhilly I didn‘t really know much about Jasper Johns, but walked away with such an appreciation of his creativity and intelligence. Would love to read his biography! I saw Stir, and it looks amazing. We were so late, that we just grabbed something in the cafeteria before it closed! Next time. That‘s so cool about your cousin! 2y
BennettBookworm I think I saw the same exhibit!! 2y
DivineDiana @BennettBookworm Wonderful! Are you living in the Philadelphia area? 2y
BennettBookworm No I‘m in NYC but my family is still in PA and we LOVE visiting the Philly art museum at least once a year :) 2y
DivineDiana How nice! With the new renovations, it is even more spectacular! 👏🏻 🖼 🧑‍🎨 2y

Fascinating and readable critical analysis and synthesis. This book had its origins in lectures Ellmann gave at the Library of Congress in the 1980s and the theme seems to be the way in which each writer dealt with contradictions in their lives and work. Definitely worth reading for those interested in art and its creation, Irish literature and drama, European history 1850-1980. Much longer review at Goodreads & LibraryThing @bibliothecarivs.

bibliothecarivs Thanks, @Milara. Good question and I meant to address that. The title has nothing to do with the analysis. The author spends no time on Dublin's effect on the writers and does talk about their time away from Ireland - Wilde at Oxford, Yeats in London and the south of France, Joyce and Beckett in Paris. A better title would have been 'Four Irishmen at Home and Abroad'. (edited) 3y

My feelings on Beckett are ambiguous, but I think the following from James Mustich's recent newsletter is worth posting:
“And there comes the hour when nothing more can happen and nobody can come and all is ended but the waiting that knows itself in vain.“

Like words that have wandered out of Shakespearean soliloquies, liberated but lost, stripped of the assurances of meter and the surety of drama, Beckett‘s phrases wander👇

vivastory restlessly through the desolate landscape of his imagination like eloquence that has lost its way but clings to its need. His sentences hum like downed wires, alive and dangerous, powering nothing beyond themselves, echoing with diminishing volume the sound and fury of distant living, with only the rhythm and the aspiration of the human voice to keep it close. 4y
