Happy Days
Happy Days: A Play in Two Acts | Samuel Beckett
10 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
In Happy Days, Samuel Beckett pursues his relentless search for the meaning of existence, probing the tenuous relationships that bind one person to another, and each to the universe, top time past and time present. Once again, stripping theater to its barest essentials, Happy Days offers only two characters: Winnie, a woman of about fifty, and Willie, a man of about sixty. In the first act Winnie is buried up to her waist in a mound of earth, but still has the use of her arms and few earthly possessionstoothbrush, tube of toothpaste, small mirror, revolver, handkerchief, spectacles; in the second act she is embedded up to her neck and can move only her eyes. Willie lives and moveson all foursbehind the mound, appearing intermittently and replying only occasionally into Winnies long monologue, but the knowledge of his presence is a source of comfort and inspiration to her, and doubtless the prerequisite for all her happy days.

Winnie‘s babbling as a comfort measure, a protective layer to stave off real feeling & suffering. Boredom to be avoided but also welcomed as an alternative to pain. Language as distracting noise: quotes, clichés, memories, banal catch phrases. Comforting, but without meaning. Change & stasis together. Beast vs. reason. Lack of awareness. Habits to protect self from knowledge. Optimism and anguish. Armpit stink jokes. Cheerfully pushing back pain.

Saw a solid production last night & reminded of how much I love the character of Winnie & 💜 this play. Such a marathon for the actor! Winnie is so annoying but so lovable. Fragility & perseverance. Nagging & care. Language as a way to control time. Habits, ritual, to maintain mental stability. Cartesian mind/body. Imposing order on chaos. Distraction. Comfort. Hope. “what I find so wonderful” “Words fail, there are times when even they fail.”1961

Awful! It‘s one long monologue

In this unconventional play, a woman is buried up to her chest in sand (later, up to her neck). Despite her dreadful circumstances, the protagonist manages to find enjoyment in the smallest things in the monotony of every day life. She doesn't let her predicament get the better of her. 🤷‍♀️

Anyone who is a fan of Beckett will like this play. In act I Winnie is buried up to her waist in earth and tries to find ways to pass the time and stay happy. Her happiness based on tiny interactions with her spouse who crawls around on the earth. In act 2 it is more desperate with Winnie buried to her neck. The play conveys existential dread, but also the continued need to seek out happiness and complete mundane tasks.
