Challenger Deep | Neal Shusterman

Pickpick

Shusterman used his experience with his own sons's schizophrenia for this. Gorgeous & heartbreaking (but ultimately hopeful) this tells the story of Caden as he travels the open seas with the Captain. It was interesting how the narrative of his real life (and the rather terrifying ways his illness manifested) and his journey with the Captain are at first separate and then mesh as the medication starts working.

Suet624 This was such a good book. I was not expecting to love it. 7y

This hit home in a lot of ways. My early school years were full of this bumbling, awkward in & out of friendships, never quite knowing where I stood, anxiety. I still am, to a point. Really cute art in this one!

Suet624 Same here. 7y
TracyReadsBooks Loved this book too. 7y

Very sweet and explains drug/alcohol abuse in a soft way. Love, love the inclusion of the comics and Sunny's friendship with Buzz.

AmandaL I liked this one too. 7y
night_shift @AmandaL It was a nice break from the heavier (& one dumb) books I've been reading! 7y

Girl in a Bad Place | Kaitlin Ward

I dunno. This was mildly entertaining and a quick read. I loved how one of the main themes was to question everything, but the cult leader's motivation was stupid (& yes, I understand he was supposed to be crazy but he was just not threatening or charming enough to come off as anything but lame) and Cara changed her mind SO quickly I thought it was going to be a trap because it literally took one sentence. Ugh 🙄

Horizon | Scott Westerfeld

Pickpick

Fast-paced & action-packed, this was a pretty enjoyable read! The characters were pretty well rounded and so smart! They're handling things in their own unique ways, which is cool. Either way, looking forward to borrowing the next two from work. This series is written by Westerfeld, but each book it looks like will be co-written? by another YA author. Next up is the author of the False Prince.

night_shift There's also a mobile game to play along with the books, but I haven't checked it out yet! 7y
night_shift Oh and apparently it's been called the sci-fi version of this book, but I haven't read it so I don't know. 7y

Mehso-so

I liked the ideas presented here, but many of the main characters were just SO unlikable and the pacing was just.. painful. Nothing action-wise happens until the last quarter of the book. That said, I'm interested enough in what might happen to these people to read the sequel, which I own anyway so why not haha

The Library Book | Tom Chapin, Michael Mark

Mehso-so

It's written like a song, with a sort of chorus, and I couldn't really get a feel of the rhythm so this read really harsh to me. I do like that it's about a library and books though ?

Apparently, it's "Library Song" by Tom Chapin off his album Moonboat. I'll have to Google to hear this.

A retelling of 'The Little Red Hen' but with a determined little girl and her three brothers. (& other members of her family) Cute art!

Mehso-so

The villains seemed way too childish, not much of a threat, and with the exception of Kiran all the other characters felt like caricatures and cardboard cut-outs of archtypes, but it was quite an adventure & so much of it was completely new mythos to me. Also, liked the list of books for further reading in the back!
