The story that turned me into a fanatic lover of detective fiction. Nancy Drew embodies the kind of girl we all wanted to be: beautiful, beyond clever, adventurous, inquisitive, friendly, I mean she even drives a convertible at 18! The story holds up well, though I found I was quite nostalgic while reading it. The puzzle is easier to solve as an adult (esp. with the title), but it doesn't make it any less fun. #NancyDrewBR #ChildrensClassicRead

dabbe @TheBookHippie Why am I not surprised? Now that you mention it, my mom did try and lock my sister in her bedroom to “keep her out of trouble.“ She just escaped through the window--until they put locks on that as well. #sucharebel #thosewerenotthegoodoldays (edited) 6mo

Am I the only one on Litsy who has no earthly idea what their first grown up book was? Absolutely no clue.

BooksTeasAndBookishThings No... I see some that I read young that others are posting: Gone With The Wind, VC Andrews' novels, Agatha Christie's novels, etc... But, I cannot recall my very first adult book. =/ 8y

Sue The only reason I could guess the author is because the pickings were so slim in my area back in the 80s. :) 8y

Titania My reported first adult book is not really my first adult book. I know I read To Kill a Mockingbird before I read Forever, but Forever is the first book I remember feeling like I was reading an adult book. 8y

DreesReads I don't know either--mine was probably an Agatha Christie from the junior high library (I read every one they had). My mom full-on policed my reading before that (and after), but anything from the school library passed her criteria. 8y

Owlizabeth I had such a controlled childhood, sneaking The Shining was a BIG deal for me. I'd read other adult books, but they were classics or religious. The Shining marked what I consider adult reading, because it wasn't parent approved. #sucharebel 8y

LauraBrook I have vague memories, but neither a title nor an author will surface. When I was little I thought Nancy Drew was adult-ish bc they had hard covers and thicker spines. Yeah, not really adulty. I'm going to guess and pick an early one, that I know I read in middle school.

RebL Nor I. Part of the reason is that my public school was like a prep school. Assigned reading versus elected reading gets jumbled and so my thinking gets muddy when I try to figure it out. 8y
