The story that turned me into a fanatic lover of detective fiction. Nancy Drew embodies the kind of girl we all wanted to be: beautiful, beyond clever, adventurous, inquisitive, friendly, I mean she even drives a convertible at 18! The story holds up well, though I found I was quite nostalgic while reading it. The puzzle is easier to solve as an adult (esp. with the title), but it doesn't make it any less fun. #NancyDrewBR #ChildrensClassicRead

Librarybelle So true!! 1y
TheBookHippie It was what they call good clean fun- right? 1y

dabbe @TheBookHippie I admit I was surprised at her being locked in the closet; I thought the thugs were quite rough for an ND mystery! 🤩 (edited) 1y
TheBookHippie @dabbe well I mean …. 👀🤣 they did it to children as punishment around these parts - the “Christians” 1y
dabbe @TheBookHippie Why am I not surprised? Now that you mention it, my mom did try and lock my sister in her bedroom to “keep her out of trouble.“ She just escaped through the window--until they put locks on that as well. #sucharebel #thosewerenotthegoodoldays (edited) 1y
tpixie @dabbe the locked closet was a little tense 😬 1y
dabbe @tpixie It was, wasn't it? I kept thinking how I didn't remember such a tense seen in a Nancy Drew book, but boy, was I wrong! 🤣 1y
tpixie @dabbe 👍🏻. BTW- I love that photo!! 1y
dabbe @tpixie I thought it was kinda cool! 🤩🤗😘 1y

Afternoon tea with Nancy. #childrensclassicread #buddyread #NancyDrewBR

The pace is fast- I feel like I am zipping around with Nancy in her new dark blue convertible! I have not read this series since 1st, 2nd grade- such fun!
Thanks to. @TheBookHippie @Librarybelle

Librarybelle That looks like a very cozy afternoon! 1y
kspenmoll @Librarybelle It is! Rain has been pouring down all day, so there is a chill to the air. What is not pictured is the cat on my lap! 1y

@TheBookHippie
This was an interesting pair that I read back to back.
I never realized the mom was the villain the first edition.
The True Story of Hansel and Gretel was a unique retelling set during World War II. It was dark, twisted, and disturbing. I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

TheBookHippie It‘s all fascinating to me. Look how differently it is portrayed as hundreds of years go by. 1y
tpixie Oh! Thanks! I forgot I had this book on my shelf. I‘ll have to read it!!! 1y
tpixie Yes. So do you think the mother was the mean lady in the house that they killed? And that‘s why the mother was dead when they returned home??? that‘s what I was interpreting it as I read it this time and I thought maybe I was making it up. .. 1y

TheBookHippie @tpixie oh I‘m so glad you said that. I had the same thought!!!! I don‘t know either but it is how I interpreted it!! 1y
tpixie @TheBookHippie lol well we must be right! 1y
TheBookHippie @tpixie Oh how interesting!!! I was going to look it up when I got home parent teacher conferences tonight! So we will just go with we are probably correct!! LOL 1y
tpixie @TheBookHippie lol Yes!!! 1y
IndoorDame @tpixie @TheBookHippie I saw that connection too this time, and I think I remember reading that connection in the intro commentary in a previous version I‘ve read. But I also wondered if the writer doesn‘t feel the need to punish the mother as part of the moral. Like letting her live after she tries to kill the children wouldn‘t be socially acceptable? 1y
tpixie @IndoorDame that‘s a great point! 1y

Thimble Summer | Elizabeth Enright

Pickpick

Thimble Summer pub.1938 was a wholesome, sweet read 4.5⭐#childrensclassicread @TheBookHippie
Three Strike Summer 3.5⭐ pub 2022 #MiddleGradeMarchBuddyRead on YouTube; enjoyable, but so many heavy adult themes and topics were in this book.

It was interesting to read these back to back. Both were about young, head strong girls set in the Depression era. Yet, they were so different because of when they were published.

TheBookHippie I really have enjoyed the sweetness of our read this month. It was needed. 2y
sblbooks @TheBookHippie me too! I really think you would like Three Strike Summer, as well. 2y
TheBookHippie @sblbooks I‘ll add it to the list! 2y

Cinfhen Any thoughts on what your next audio will be??! 2y
Daisey @Cinfhen I had a hold come in for Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson, so probably that, but I‘m really not sure what I‘ll feel like when I finish Martin Eden. 2y

I enjoyed this, and I loved Birdie, but the disregard (and cruelty) towards animals was very jarring. I also found the ending rather abrupt; I wonder how long Mr. Slater‘s change of heart will last? 😏

#ChildrensClassicRead

MemoirsForMe Agreed! Not sure Mr. Slater‘s sudden sunny disposition will last the week. 😆 2y
