Skeleton Man | Tony Hillerman
post image

#WeeklyForecast a little late since I was busy yesterday being lazy and playing video games 😂 I actually already bailed on Save the Date when I found out how part of it was going to end. Frederica is my #LMPBC book this month so it is high priority this week. I am hoping to read the next three Leaphorn and Chee books for the #BacklistReadathon although after I got them from the library I realized that this is where we switch to Tony's daughter ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) so the third one isn't technically Hillerman backlist. However, I'm sticking with it because the books are already here!! Overall would like to read 7 books for the #JoyousJanuary readathon - the four mentioned, Bambi for the #ChildrensClassicRead, Not That Kind of Guy for the #TBRbyColor challenge (January is pink), and hidden behind Bambi is the next book in the historical mystery series I'm reading with my sister, Murder ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) at the Piccadilly Playhouse. I should be home a lot this week, but have TONS of projects I am trying to check off, plus a new addictive video game for the evenings, so we'll see how far I get!!
@Cinfhen @Clwojick @Andrew65
Clwojick Oooo. What video game are you playing? 2w

TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick - Wytchwood... you literally run around collecting things to craft them into things and take them to people who want other things 😂 It is not for everyone, but I kind of love resource games so I'm into it. Puts my husband right to sleep if he tries to watch, though! 😆 2w
Cinfhen That video game actually appeals to me 🥰Carry on 😘😘 2w
Andrew65 Have a great week. 😁 2w
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - It's so right up my alley!! Even though there are critters that will attack you, if your character loses all her hearts, she just goes back to cottage. The whole game is SO low-stress for me that I can't stop playing 😂 2w
Cinfhen It sounds perfect!!! Im glad you‘re enjoying this stress-less game! And who doesn‘t love critters 2w

I didn‘t have particularly strong feelings about this which surprised me. I see how this got adapted into the Disney version that‘s such a cultural touchstone, and I also see the ways in which Salten uses it as a dark political commentary, but I mostly connected with it on a surface level, appreciating all the lovely descriptive passages about a life in the forest. #Pantone2023 #LoveBird #ChildrensClassicRead @Clwojick @TheBookHippie

batsy I loved the forest depictions—it felt like a bit of a enchanted dream space. 3w
IndoorDame @batsy yes, exactly! 3w

tpixie Gorgeous!!! 1mo
erzascarletbookgasm Lovely copy! I‘m reading the PDF version. 1mo
Soscha Jack Zipes is a noted folklorist as well. I‘m as eager to read his take as the book itself tbh. (I wanted to be folklorist but let‘s just say it‘s not really a growth industry in the market. 😢) 1mo
TheBookHippie @Soscha It is very good!! I am quite taken with it! 1mo
batsy Oooh, nice! 💚 1mo
UwannaPublishme Beautiful cover! 4w
tpixie @Soscha what a wonderful dream! Folklorist 🍁 2w
tpixie @TheBookHippie a few paragraphs down discusses the translators 1w
tpixie This claims, he also wrote the book that the Disney movie the shaggy dog was based on

The Hound of Florence” concerns a young Austrian man destined to spend every other day of his life as the archduke‘s dog; in the end, he is stabbed to death, in his dog form, while trying to protect a courtesan he loves from assault. (In an even more drastic transformation than the one “Bambi” underwent, this story became, in Disney‘s hands, “The Shaggy Dog.”)
TheBookHippie @tpixie It is all so fascinating and so much more than the Disney troupe … I absolutely love the version I have ! 1w
TheBookHippie @tpixie thanks for the links!!!!! You, me and @UwannaPublishme end up as researchers with all these reads! We are learning so much!! 1w
tpixie @TheBookHippie lol yes! I can‘t help but look further! Thanks for putting up with it!! 😂😅🌺 1w
TheBookHippie @tpixie It‘s second nature to me to do it. But I absolutely love what we are learning! 1w
tpixie @TheBookHippie yes! This has been a great experience! I‘m so happy I found your #ChildrensClassicRead ! 1w
UwannaPublishme @TheBookHippie @tpixie 😁😁😁 We are just hungry harbingers for trivia and news! 1w

Librariana I like the idea of #PrioritizeYourShelf and will look into it more as I have a beautifully ridiculous amount of owned unread books 😊 I really appreciate all these posts folks are sharing with challenge tags and hosts as I'd like to learn more about them! 1mo

When I took a look at the copy I‘d planned to read for #ChildrensClassicRead this month, I realized my childhood version actually did have the original text with a very slightly different translation. But even growing up with the original, the details were way more gruesome than I‘d realized. I think in the 80s instead of discussing difficult passages in readalouds with kids people just skipped over them.👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

IndoorDame And while I was encouraged to read this on my own when I was older, the text was dense and the artwork was so amazing that I usually just started and the pictures and read a few favorite passages over and over. I definitely didn‘t learn about the custom of widows being burned on funeral pyres until I was a teenager in Thailand (where I was assured it was exceedingly rare in those days). 👇🏼 2mo
IndoorDame Did I like this better because it was in a cherished volume? Definitely. But that‘s not the only fond association I have with it. This one is so part of the culture. 2mo
TheBookHippie I love the cover! Great review! 1mo

Love! Love! Love! I definitely had Paddington Bear stories read to me as a young girl, but I‘m not sure I ever heard the original version before, and while I know this is read mostly by children, I actually appreciated it way more as an adult. The version I read had a fabulous afterword in which the author said he didn‘t write it for any particular age group because before writing this story he‘d written exclusively for adults,⬇️

IndoorDame but that this was one of those ideas that just tumbled out of him, and as he was compelled to write more Paddington became more real to him, and he went on to share heartwarming anecdotes about how he learned Paddington had become real to his readers too. #ChildrensClassicRead 2mo
TheBookHippie I love this review!!! I love Paddington even more now. It‘s been so wonderful spending time with him. 2mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie it really has been wonderful 🐻🧡🤎 2mo

India celebrates Children's Day on Nov 14 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. this day reminds me of two things which I like to share, i, e creating a better world for our future generation, & to be a child at heart 🥰 wish you all a happy children‘s day 🥰 Tagged 1 is probably the first book I read in Eng, which reminds me of my childhood. I haven't done a book report in a while, so I'll just do one for the whole month. @Cinfhen
August #BookReport #forecast for early September
Last month was a slow one for me due to changes at work. I hope I can get back to listening to audiobooks soon. The Book of Lost Names was my favorite last month. I also enjoyed the #ChildrensClassicRead
I have high hopes for September.Marilla of Green Gables is excellent so far.

Cinfhen I‘m very tempted to pick up this one, even though I swore no more WWII books 5mo

This classic certainly had me reaching for a few tissues.😭The mother‘s devotion to her family, the sweet sibling bonds, the overwhelming kindness and unconditional love—touched my heart. Living in today‘s crazy world, I‘m always up for a happy ending. And since Edith Nesbit had quite a tumultuous family life, I guess these happy endings made her feel better too.

TheBookHippie It‘s like a warm hug. 5mo
