A terrific ending to an extraordinarily unique and entertaining fantasy series. “The Black Company” books have a reputation for bleakness, but I found the tough-love camaraderie among the characters to be the series‘ defining characteristic (along with the humor and unpretentious style). The ending was quite moving and caught me by surprise. Supposedly Glen Cook has one more novel planned…tick tock, Glen. Finish it before World War III please.
The most lovable of lovable rogues return in this penultimate entry in the “Black Company” series. In this one, the remnants of the company are trapped in an occupied city and hunted by a supremely powerful sorceress while their entire leadership is frozen in an impossible-to-reach fortress. The solution? Create almighty chaos and hilariously brazen hijinks for 15 years while planning the rescue. It‘s impossible not to root for these characters.
This was just…I didn‘t like it. It was frantic and jerky, and we get dropped in in the middle of…something. And everyone and everything is talked about like we know what it is. It‘s like if you opened a Wheel of Time book and started in the middle. I don‘t have the patience to keep reading and see if it ever makes sense.
Just finished the third (and best so far, in my opinion) omnibus of this entertaining niche 1980s/1990s fantasy series about the grim adventures of a brotherhood of roughneck mercenaries over several decades. Gallows humor, hard-boiled narration, bewildering battles with a “grunt” POV, decidedly trippy magic…the unpolished blue-collar vibe of “The Black Company” series is subversive and strangely addictive. I‘ll be finishing the series soon.
Apart from becoming so desensitized from Grim Dark fantasy I just kind of don't really enjoy it at all. This is about a mercenary band and while I do enjoy the threads of found family and history nerd chronicling their adventures overall I just got tired of it being about Evil vs Evil. I also had trouble with the fact that there was kind of no resolution for the main characters. IDK if I want to read on tbh.
